BenQ W1060 [1080p] Projector $999 @ Officeworks

370

Sup guys, thought this was a pretty sweet deal - the first full HD projector I've seen for under a thousand bucks. Comes with a two year warranty, the guys on whirlpool seem to think it's a solid product, or at least better than others in the price range (even 720p's).

Two HDMI inputs, 2000 lumens, 5000:1 contrast ratio. Seems that the picture is good but the speakers are terrible (what did you expect?). Lamp life of 4500 hours with normal use, no idea how this rates. My impression seems to be they skimped out on everything that wasn't necessary - no paper manual, terrible speaker even by projector standards and no media playing features - but stuck all the money where it matters; a good picture and plenty to connect to it. Very smart IMO.

The only downside I can see so far is that it's already at Officeworks, so you probably can't get that 5% off XD (Then again, I know some of you are damn skilled bargainers…)

Don't need to say under 1k. We can see from $999

      done.

        but it drew attention!

        • +1

It did, but I've tried to make the connection very obvious without redundancy now. Everyone can be happy!

  • Very impressive deal! Pretty hard to find a 1080p projector under $1k.
    If only I had a want for a 1080p projector…..

It can help for sure, but it's my experience that a good deal alone can be enough reason for me to purchase something… my steam library can certainly attest to that.

      • Sadly, mine can too :(
Many games in my list that haven't been downloaded, yet!

But there is a difference between spending $3 on a game and $999.

What are the normal prices of full hd projectors?

    • +1

Costco have been selling the Acer H7531D DLP Projector for under $1000 since last year.
So I would say it is becoming a "normal" starting price for the market segment…

The specs don't seem that different from the BenQ

      LCD - $1600
DLP (like this one) - $1200

Big Plus from me, same price as the states for a start. decent reviews to boot. basically a stipped down version of the slightly higher end models. A great price for an entry 1080p projector for someone looking to get into rear projection. Slower colour wheel so not ideal if you are prone to RBE however

For movies I would recommend splashing slightly more and getting a Mitsubishi hc4000 (DLP) or epson 8350 (LCD) from the US but that is not something most people are willing to do so this is a great deal.

looks not bad without thinking about the brand

    I just order a 720p from Dell online, $699 after 30% off

normally 720p should be enough for me :)

  • im installing a home theater in my new place, but wont be ready for a projector until nov/dec.. so guess i'll pass this up, might get a better deal by then? hmm

    • +1

      or maybe not

      • i will take the chance!

my guess is that sub $1k 1080p projectors will be the norm later this year. The same BenQ in the US is about $1,000 as a normal price.

There was a sale in the US late last year for a 1080P projector for $660, shipped (US only) ViewSonic Pro8200

So, if our dollar holds it's value, things should be a lot cheaper in nov/dec.

Optoma HD20/HD80 are both under a grand and are better bang for buck. Just sayin

That's what I'm thinking. This deal might go away, but generally prices are only going to go down, not up. Later this year there might be 3D capable projectors for around the same price.

  • I think it will run out of stock soon. usual officeworks deal

Hi All - mid last year I purchased a W1100 from digital centre for $1102 - the projector is amazing. I know all these different benQ models have different strengths/weaknesses depending on the application. This site is the best around for comparisons http://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-W1060.htm

To those considering 720p projectors: If you're going big screen, don't skimp on resolution - go 1080p or go home.

    • +1

      How big are you talking?

I've got a 120" screen and a 720p projector and it's just fine for movies and xbox. brightness could be better, but the resolution is great. i've had it for almost 8 years now and it's still running strong. probably going to upgrade to the newer 3d projectors at the end of this year

    • Apart from blu ray movies, not a lot of content is 1080p (most XBox and PS3 games are 720p)

how much do the replacement lamps cost?

    • Cheapest I found through a quick, non-exhaustive Google search was $255: http://www.projectorlampexperts.com.au/products/17894-benq-5…

Honestly though, with a lamp life of 4500 hours (that's a lot of movies!), most home users will find the projector obsolete and out of warranty by the time the lamp dies, and it'd probably make more sense to buy a new one.

      • +1 to that
I've had my XGA projector for 5 years, and it's been my sole TV device for the past 3 years. I checked the hours on the weekend and I'm only up to 1450 hours on the 3000 hours expected lifespan!
I guess I don't run it for tens of hours every day, but for Movies and Sporting events it's been great.

My next PJ will definitely be 1080 or higher resolution though. With a 2.5m diagonal screen, I definitely get a flywire effect.

      • thanks….wish I bought this instead of my 50" sammy plasma (PS50C7000) for $2000 when it first came out…early adopters get burned again! :)

  • +1

Good deal i reckon. I bought a benq dlp about 5, 6 years ago for about $2500 - xga resolution only, 4:3, no hdmi inputs. Waiting for the damn lamp to die so i can upgrade to a nice 1080 widescreen projector with anamorphic lens! That said, i hope prices only continue to get better this year.

  • how are these guys run with nvidia surround or eyefinity.

    • I'm guessing the way any other monitor would work - it takes VGA and HDMI inputs, so I see no reason for it to not to. What space do you have though that you would have multiple 3m projected screens? O.o

  • Have seen these around for the past month… personally waiting for a discount on this price as it seems standard across the board.

  • can i just use a white wall as "screen"? how good are these projectors for gaming (ps3, xbox360 and pc)?

    • White "blockout" curtain material works fairly well and is very cheap.

A projector works well for casual gaming, but there are games I prefer to play on a monitor.

    • can i just use a white wall as "screen"?

Yes. A projector screen (or special projector screen paint on the wall) should improve picture quality a bit (mainly contrast, I think?) but is by no means necessary. The wall doesn't even need to be pure white.

how good are these projectors for gaming (ps3, xbox360 and pc)?

If the games you like are cinematic or immersive, fantastic. A huge screen enhances games just as much as movies, if not more.

  • I think I will wait as i think the 1080p projectors will come down in price this year, I have been looking at the Sony VPLHW15

  • how does this projector go in sunlight or can it only be used at night time?

    • From what I've read it can handle a light or two being on in the room, but of course the darker the better. If you have sunlight streaming in I don't think that will ever make a brilliant projector setup, best get a few thick curtains to block out the bulk of that light.

  • This is the most expensive ozbargain listed deal I've purchased yet — took the splash… Biggest complain is the whirring noise it makes - which is different from the fan cooling noise. The fan (white noise) is pretty low, but the whirring noise is distracting in silent/quiet scenes and when you have the projector mounted above your head its really obvious.

Rainbow effect is visible in some scenes, but not having owned a DLP projector before cannot compare it to others - it can be distracting at times… Contrast ratio is okay (wish it was slightly blacker)… Colour and image quality wise its pretty sweet..

    • Thanks for the review :)
