Tripp Lite 1000VA 600W 8x C13 Outlet UPS $109 Delivered @ Centre Com

110

UPS battery backups have been popular at OzBargain lately and Centre Com have this one on clearance with free delivery.

The downside for some people is that it only has C13 plug outputs, but it does come with two C13-to-C14 cables and C14 to AU plugs can be purchased for <$5 online. For me personally it's not a big deal as I run a homelab and can run servers and NAS drives off them.

There's also a 850VA 480W for $69 and 650VA 260W for $49, however they're instore only.

I don't see any energy specs, so battery not included?
Can I use a 12v deep cycle car battery?

    • It comes with a battery and this is what it would contain. Pretty much what most other UPS' in this range carry.

12V 9AH sealed lead acid battery with F2 connection terminals

      • Sorry, was reading on phone.
Found specs: 300w for only 5 minutes, so 25 Wh.
My Home made DC ups with power tool battery does better!

No way to connect a bigger battery?

        • They only need to supply power to cover a graceful shutdown - if your PC/NAS/Server is drawing <=300w then 5 minutes is plenty of time 👍

If you want a bigger UPS then just buy a bigger UPS - 2100VA units are affordable on the used market.

          • @Nom: I only need 60w @ 12v for server, modem, security system. So was hoping for something cheap to provide a few hours. Will look, thanks .

  • Thanks, bought one! Seems there's only 1 left online.

  • Bought another version. Thanks.

  • Updated: I bought 2 of 750va 450w version, and I found that the battery in these are third party batteries not the RBC51 battery as listed. (dusty batteries too…) B.B. Battery SHR7-12 12V 27WPC

3.5Ah battery, what a disappointment. This is either the false advertisement by Tripp Lite or a scam…

My 700VA Cyberpower UPS had a 12v 7.2Ah battery included.

      • 750VA 450W is referring to the maximum load that the UPS can drive, not the runtime. It has nothing to do with the internal battery capacity.

The 3.5Ah battery can provide 3.5A * 12 = 42w for one hour (60 minutes). Which also very roughly means it can provide 420w for 6 minutes (ten times the draw means a tenth of the runtime), or the UPS' rated maximum 450w for about 5.5 minutes. Which is still more than enough time for your connected systems to shutdown, even if you're pushing the UPS right to it's maximum rating.

In practice, UPS units and batteries are not 100% efficient, so the real life runtimes will be lower than the above.

Which is why the Centrecom page for this unit states "2.4 minutes runtime at 100% load (450 watts), 8.6 minutes runtime at 50% load (225 watts)"…. https://www.centrecom.com.au/tripp-lite-avr-series-230v-750v…

Short version : Everything is as expected. Bargain basement UPS units have extremely short runtimes.

  • Received the 1000VA version, defective. Battery charge drops from 100%->36% within a minute.

Half Load Runtime (min.) 5 minutes (300 watts)

It's only rated to run for 5 minutes at half load - so for full load of 600w you should expect it to last less than 2 minutes…

What have you got connected to it ? If you're drawing a high load, then a large capacity drop within the first minute is fine….

      • My test was maybe 10w at best since it was two external HDDs lol.
Here's what it looks like, it stops at 36% before it acts normal. None of my other UPS have ever done this. Done the exact same thing every time. Just goes all the way to 36%.
        https://streamable.com/3j557p

I've recorded another one where it continues to drop capacity relatively quickly with zero load. Coincides with an Amazon review (https://www.amazon.com.au/Line-Interactive-Battery-Outlets-D…) : "…Then plugged in some equipment that it reported as drawing next to no load (basically my broadband router and a couple of network hubs which have very small power utilisation) and tested it. The battery indicator dropped from 95% down to 13% in about a minute."

        • Sounds like the batteries are stuffed, I wonder how old the stock is.
You should be able to run well over an hour with just a pair of external hard drives…

        • Hi mate! Sorry to hijack your post. I am downgrading my office and looking to offload two UPS. I have a HP T1500 G3 UPS and a Powershield Defender 1200. Let me know if you're looking into to get a second-hand or used UPS.
