The way you access Telstra Air is changing

Received this email from Telstra minutes ago.

Hi tooblue,

Occasionally we need to make updates to our products and services.

We wanted to remind you that from March 2021 the way you can access Telstra Air will be changing. From that date, you’ll no longer be able to connect to Telstra Air using Wi-Fi hotspots on the modems of participating residential customers nor will you be able to connect using FON Wi-Fi hotspots.

What does this mean for you?
You will still be able to connect to thousands of other hotspots when you’re out and about. Wi-Fi hotspots can be located using the Telstra Air App and will still be available via:

  • Selected Payphones
  • Participating Telstra Stores
  • Telstra Corporate Foyers
  • Selected office spaces and Telstra exchanges
  • Businesses that partner with Telstra in offering Telstra Air Wi-Fi.

If your plan is no longer suitable for your needs following this change, you can cancel your plan. You can also change your plan once a month, if your needs change. If you have been using Telstra Air Wi-Fi for your data needs, and the hotspots that you have used will no longer be available, you may wish to consider changing to a new mobile plan with more data included. If you choose to cancel your plan simply pay out your device, accessories or services.

    Interesting.
It says if your plan is no longer suitable because of this change, you can cancel your plan.

Does that mean you can terminate your jbhifi contract citing this as a reason without paying ETC.

Every residential air I have connected too had crazy lag and ping, not sure if changed.
Pretty sure everything I was doing was being recorded and data sold.

I’m no tech guy but I’m pretty sure both those sentences come close to describing 90% of Australia’s internet…

  • I haven’t used a Telstra Air connection for a long time. I had a lot of trouble trying to use it.

I signed up to FON WiFi about 10 years ago when it first started in the UK. It was basically free, and you "donated" a part of your broadband to other FON users. In return you got FON access all around the world.

All this time later, my login and password still work and I'm still able to use hotspots all over the place. It's been a lifesaver on many occasions.
