get the hooded version if ur getting this, totally worth the extra $50

    • +8

I only have the jackets without the hoods (Uber and Halo). I prefer a beanie to a hood.

      • +7

Same colour Hooded Halo for $27 more, but FREE shipping, so $17 more in total

    • +8

I have used both hooded and not hooded down jackets.

Not hooded are much more practical imo.

Got the mercury hooded jacket for $108, great price!

    • +2

I got it for 96 a few weeks ago. 108 is still a good price I reckon. I’m happy with it because it packs small and is excellent for backpacking. The down certificate shows fill power of 750 instead of the advertised 650 which was a good surprise (I expected maybe 50 more but not 100)

      • +1

Oh sweet, I'll be using it mainly for backpacking so happy with a bit more heat and less weight

  • Hooded Halo - much warmer
Fill Type 80/20 RDS Duck Down
    Fill Power (cuin) 600
    Fill Weight (g) 205 (size M)

    Mercury Hooded - much thinner
Fill Type 90/10 RDS Duck Down
    Fill Power (cuin) 650
    Fill Weight (g) 137 (Size M)

    • the Hooded is actually warmer despite thinner due to the higher fill power … 90 down 10 feather as opposed to 80/20

      • Hooded and not hooded is the same…

        Mercury is 90/10. It's a different jacket.

        • You people are confusing me. Someone decode all this with a conclusion please :)

          • +2

@Click_It: The Halo jacket is the one in this deal and it doesn't matter if you get hooded or not. It's the same warmth.

There is another jacket on sale at Macpak called Mercury which is warmer than the Halo.

      • I meat Halo versus Mercury…essentially the xx/yy -> 90/10 the higher the first digit pair, the warmer it is ….

    • Curious why the Mercury is more expensive tho?

      • Warmer yet lighter!

    • +2

      The Halo is warmer.

Despite the higher quality fill of the Mercury the Halo makes up for it by having much more.

Source: Printed information in the MacPac store.

Tall people note - the Mercury is noticeably longer. The Halo is a bit short for tall folks.

Was too slow on the 20% extra offer. Hard to go down to 10% :(

    • same thoughts here :-\

  • How's the quality compared to Kathmandu? I tried on a friend's Kathmandu hooded was surprisingly light but warm, was thinking of getting something similar but don't remember style/model. But the Kathmandu's are what, 200$/300$+?

    • +7

Macpac are generally considered a higher quality brand than Kathmandu, although Kathmandu do have the occasional product that stands out. Not sure on their down jackets.

    • +3

I'd personally pick Macpac over Kathmandu anyday (I have both). Generally has better material, lining and higher fill rate. Also theres bit of negative stigmatism surrounding kathmandu puffer jackets, but if you dont care about that it doesnt really matter.

      • thanks both! yeah I don't really mind all that much which brand, just after one for autumn/winter as my old one broke down last winter. just pulled the trigger on a mercury hooded suggested above.

also a question on how you guys wash these down jackets, machine washing or hand wash? frequency? just damp cloth to dab on dirtied areas? - nvm i just saw the care section beneath the product's page

        • +2

i dont wash them too often as it wears out the down a bit more. I just chuck in the washing machine, make sure its cold wash. But when I dry it, I dry it flat, if you hang it regularly all the down just sits at the bottom of each segment and clumps up.

edit: forgot to mention that i feel like macpac hoodies wears larger than usual. I normal wear Size m Shirts/hoodies/jackets etc. First time i bought a puffer jacket from them, I got a size M, it was too large for me so I exchanged for a size S, which fit me fine. Macpac size S was more similar to Kathmandu Size M

    • Macpac significantly better quality than Kathmandu.

Bought the Halo Hooded for $116. Thanks!

  • That RRP is a bit of a joke.

    • It reminds me of the Facebook ads. Where they have a grossly inflated rrp and never ending 50% off sales

    • +1

Have you looked at the RRP of a similar jacket by Patagonia? $600+

      • +1

Patagonia rarely goes on sale and usually sells at RRP.

      • +1

Patagonia products are considerably different. Even those that function in a similar way (or maybe even look similar) were developed at significantly higher cost.

  • Does anyone know if the sale is available in-store too. I would like to try the sizes before buying.

  • Thanks OP ordered halo hooded. Hopefully the size fits!

  • Thanks OP, got one for wife, will be really handy in Canberra winter.
