thanks very much have a great day cathy
Yes A470 is a nice P&S camera at great price :)
Cathy — instead of asking where is the cheapest place, it would be great to list out
- What's your budget? (max $150? $300?)
- What do you intend to use it for? (general purpose point and shoot? taking video? low light? lots of zoom?)
They would definitely help us to find you the best deal :)
i would like lots of zoom, taking videos, and also one with lcd screen and slim to fit in your pocket sort of camera…if that helps!!?? if any of you guys find a camera like this please let me know!!! thanks!!!
All digital cameras will take some type of video these days. You will not get all the features you have listed for $150 however.
Both Canon models mentioned take video with the A470 being the most compact of the two. If you want something even more compact look at the Canon IXUS range however while the IXUS970IS has 5x optical zoom that is about the most you can get from something really compact.
The current Canon Ultra-Zoom model is the S5IS with 12x Optical zoom. It is relatively compact for the features it offers but certainly a lot larger/thicker than any of the IXUS range or the A470 for that matter.
Take a look at the current Canon model line up here http://www.canon.com.au/products/visual/cameras/digital_comp… and make sure that in regards to prices you check any model through http://www.staticice.com.au so you get some idea on street prices.
its for my daugter her first camera, about $150.00 she wants optical zoom and she loves Kodak ,over 6 mega pixals,i have no idea on cameras?? thanks once again !!! Scotty have a great day
In that case the Canon A470 is likely to provide the best bang for your buck. It has 7.1 megapixles and 3.4x optical zoom. More info here http://www.canon.com.au/products/visual/cameras/digital_comp…
Canon A580 has 8 megapixels and 4x optical zoom http://www.canon.com.au/products/visual/cameras/digital_comp… and can be had for just under $150 http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=canon+a580
Why does your daughter love Kodak? They are close to the bottom of my list.
Well. Kodak pretty much invented the digital camera, and they were good… A long time ago (I still have my Kodak DC280 from 2000). Now days just buy Canon as they are pretty well rounded.
Thanks to both of you for all your help im taking both your word on cannon, why she loves Kodak probarly because the kids at school have it,honestly I dont know.teenagers!!!! once again thanks, Scotty caps lock of……….im slowley learning cheers
Just to confirm Gabbyh's view, Canon models also rate highly on the Choice tests whereas Kodak tends to rate at the lower end. Digic III helps image quality as it compensates for camera movement while taking a photo, so it's less likely to blur.
For info on digic III see
im kind of looking for a camera that has a LCD screen around 2.5 or bigger if possible? thanks!!
Both Canon models mentioned have a 2.5" LCD screen. OzPete is referring to the image processor that they utilise. A470 is the best value for money model that utilises the DigicIII processor. Make sure you do not get a Canon A460 as this one only has the DigicII.
thanks very much for all your help your wonderfull!!! sorry for all this bother, extra work!! love cathyp
On another point - mainly for gabbyh - its rather technical - after doing some looking around for info on digic III to help Cathyp, I found this interesting site on how to get RAW on canon cameras. (I have A710) installed on SD card and it works for me. Which really adds a new dimension to my canon purchase.

So helping others has its benefits ….
Thanks OzPete… had glanced past this but didn't realise that it in fact gave RAW support to these standard consumer cameras. Thank you.
Reading the FAQ I note the A460 is supported so suspect the A470 can't be too far away. $117 for a point and shoot camera that supports RAW… now that is a bargain! Cheers.
thanks ozpete for your help to!! Cathyp
Dear Cathy,
Definitely buy a Canon. The Ixus ones are just brilliant. My husband talked me into buying a Petax last year cos it was waterproof and could go in the pool. Well great, I can drop it in the pool, but generally, I hate the camera. So I gave it to him to take pics in the pool, and I bought mysels a fancy little Canon Ixux 70 for $198 when they were on sale at Dick Smiths. Got that bargain on here. Unfortunately, they are all sold out now, so the next cheapest is the Ixus 80 at around $249.They are so skinny, and take the best pictures. You can do all sorts of fancy things with the camera, adding colors in and taking colors out all with point and shoot. Here are some examples of what the camera can do. it is just a random album off my facebook, but look at a few of the pics at the start of the album and the end, and you will see what I mean. These effects are SIMPLe to do on this camera. And for $200!!!

Worth every penny!

How far are you from northcote? $119 there. And drop by to a powerhouse and get eneloops AA and charger. Since A470 uses only two AA it will kill alkalines pretty quickly. So it's much cheaper in the long run to get rechargeables. Btw, not all rechargeables are the same, you'll regret buying cheap ones. Get this combo:

thanks to everyone for all your help but i bought one last week Cathrene
What features do you need the camera to have? If you are looking for a great value entry level Camera then the Canon A470 fits the bill. This is a relatively new entry level model that is the first at that price point that has the DiGicIII processor.
Cheapest place online is $119 http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=canon+a470, Harvey Norman have them on sale in their latest catalogue for $117.
