What’s Still Leftover from Your Covid Pantry Stash?

Now that the Covid saga seems to be drawing to a close with vaccinations rolling out and infections locally under control… thinking back to those heady times this time last year when the toilet paper and pasta aisles were stripped bare and everyone hoarded like there was no tomorrow… what haven’t you used? I still have 4l of spring water… can’t think why I thought there’d be a water shortage. And 2 tins of plums. Everything else is gone, even the pulse pasta! What’s left of your stash?

Chicken in a can that I picked up from Costco right before the first lockdown. No one has been desperate enough to touch it in my house!

How much you want for it

  • Got a lot of stock cubes yet to go along with canned tomato, beans which we slowly chip thru.

Still going thru the feminine hygiene, panadol/nurofen, untouched masks/goggles/gloves.

    Same as before Covid

  • Couscous. A lot of couscous.

And chicken stock which all expired this month.

  • I have a couple of UHT milk bricks nobody really wants to drink, otherwise I think everything was in the usual use/rotation. That said, we have a walk in pantry and chest freezer, so we have a pretty big food stash anyway (and 6 mouths to feed).

I detest UHT, but bought 10 litres just in case. Slowly used it in a ratio of 4:1 with fresh milk when I saw the expiry date was getting near
      .

  • Way to much quick oats. just…. A ridiculous amount. Thought covid was going to turn us all into Goldilocks or something. I dono what i was thinking…

Covid saga seems to be drawing to a close with vaccinations rolling out

Settle…. 80k people out of ~25 MILLION people have had their first shots. We are far from having any level of protection from the vaccine.

    • Plus the next mutation might not turn out so well

Nothing. I didn’t overbuy and have had to replenish my pantry several times in the last year (as per normal)

    everyone hoarded

Really? I must be different to everyone else then because I didn't hoard anything.

  • Single COVID mask

  • COVID masks.

  • SPAM. Alway kept a few around for those rainy days.

  • everyone hoarded like there was no tomorrow

How to spot people with a sub 100 IQ.

    • Noooo….the supermarkets dropped the weekly specials so there was every reason to hoard. Your argument for sharing is more on the EQ side.

  • I've got maybe 2L of hand sanitiser in bottles. Takes surprisingly long to get through that, even when COVID was around

Am I the only person who literally didn't stash away anything? I just went shopping every fortnight like I've always done for the past umpteen years…

    • +1

I'm sure you're not - I know that once the bonus points stopped, so did my shopping except for essentials - would've spent less than I normally did and avoided crowds and potential contact with covid

  • 200 pairs of shoelaces!!
I took a guess they would be the panic buyers target but it turned out to be loo paper… :-(

Is this a confession moment for those panic buyers?

I have nothing still left over, but didn't hoard in the first place. Prefer to keep my fridge and pantry as barren as possible. Easier to buy/eat what I want that way, and almost never waste anything.

During 2020 I spent more on groceries but less on food overall as I was eating out a lot less.

I didn't panic buy, since we've always bought in bulk and had a fully stocked freezer and pantry already. But I did buy a few items that I wouldn't normally get, in case we couldn't get to the shops for an extended period. For example, long life custard, in case we ran out of ice-cream and wanted something to go with desserts. Yep, still have them in the pantry…

  • Wholemeal spaghetti rescued from the scraps of shelves at Coles.

  • About half of a 2L jar of mayonnaise from when Coles were selling catering sized items.
