Ideas on How to Celebrate a Milestone Birthday - Travelling with a 70+ Year Old

Hi all,

Looking for ideas on where to go (from Melbourne) to celebrate 2x milestone birthdays in my family.

My mum turned 70 last year whilst we were in lockdown and my brother is turning 50 in 2021.

Unsure what to do as my mum is not very mobile - she can walk etc but will get tired easily - ie. she could probably handle a half day tour but not a day trip unless there are multiple rest breaks.

Looking for ideas on where to take them (flights most likely) and suggestions on what to do? Something regarded as quite unique and special? Outside of Victoria is preferable.

My mum would want to join us for all activities, so I'm thinking to make it a shorter trip.

OK about spending money but nothing too crazy (as much as I'd love to go on the Ghan it is out of reach).

Mystery flights sound cool but Qantas ones are expensive and I'm unaware of other travel agencies that do them?

Appreciate any useful input due to these covid times =)

There's a cafe down the peninsula that is reputed to do great Vanilla Slice.

Fly to Coffs Harbour…easy in and out airport
    - stay at Beachlander apartments (small, friendly complex) https://beachlander.com.au/
which is right near the beach and opposite Park Beach Bowling Club, which has great facilities and meals. The Hoey Moey Hotel is also right there for meals and socialising.
There are relaxing markets ( https://harboursidemarkets.com.au/ ) on every Sunday not far from the accomm, as well as the Yacht Club bar, restaurant and Sunday music sessions. Stroll along the pier and around the harbourside. Also close to the Jetty Strip, which has many resfaurants. Catch the courtesy bus to the Coffs Ex-services (RSL club) ( https://cex.com.au/ ) for another experience. So many things to do, you will never be bored. Love <3 Coffs.(I'm nearly as old as your Mum :) )
A great place to relax…and good for all ages.

    • Oh yes I've been to Coffs before, didn't even cross my mind! The markets were great from memory =)

Visit the old house / neighborhood. The nostalgia is real.

This is assuming you have moved.

My parents will live in their house until they die lol.

I want to go outside of Melbourne.

If you are looking for a special lunch in Melbourne I would recommend Philippe’s. They have a great set menu that includes a 250 ml carafe of wine. $55 for two courses or $65 for three. Great french food. There are stairs to get down/up.

Canberra has the balloon spectacular until the 14th of March. There's the War Memorial, art gallery, National Museum, the zoo, lots of nice cafes and restaurants, and you could even drive out to some of the wineries up north for a wine tasting and lunch.

The war memorial is good but it does involve a fair bit of walking.

It does, but they also offer free wheelchairs for loan, so that could be an option if OP's mum was keen. Can also break it down over a few days, or just see some of the stuff they're more interested in, rather than the whole thing. I live in Canberra and don't think I've ever seen the whole thing in one go. :)

Thanks for update. One of the most moving bits is the POW section. When there was nothing more they could do they made sure their fellow prisoners didn’t die alone.

  • Are they wine drinkers?

A trip to the Barossa would be nice.

    A flight over Antarctica?

    • For all 3 of us it's outside of my range. I did looking this for NYE in the past but can't afford it for all of us.

Unless there is an awesome deal I'm yet to discover hehe (Buy 2 get one free? Too hopeful? XD )

    • it's borin as fk and cold lol

Yes I've been there on a boat for an expedition with my old company.

  • Old people wanna be around nature. Take her to the hunter Valley or Margaret River or South Australia's vineyards in the Barossa .

If she is into wine then Rutherglen is pretty good. All the wineries have good car parking. They are pretty close together and Pickled Sisters is a great place to lunch. If they have some of the peach chutney available buy some. It is delicious. The IGA in the town is, probably, the cheapest place to buy wine from.
