As the title states. It’s main purpose is for playing on the PS5 so 60hz refresh rate would be minimum. HDR would definitely be a nice to have as well. Smart tv would be good but not a dealbreaker. Thanks for any help
Recommendations for a 50-55” 4K TV under $650?

Been seeing that some of the hisense ones from JB all have 50hz refresh rates which is a bummer
I don't think there is such a thing as 50hz and 60hz tv's. That's just to do with the free to air broadcast signal.
You won't be making the most of the PS5 if you buy a TV cheaper than the console itself.
I dunno, I’ve never been much of a pixel peeper. Just looking for a generational upgrade from our old 43” 1080p panel.
Would my options be much better with a budget of around 800-900?
You'd probably be better off spending $700 on a 50in 1080p TV instead.
Sure it might be a little more money, a little smaller, and less resolution……. but it could/should be better overall. You might be able to get one that has more longevity/build-quality, and a noticeably superior picture quality: latency, frame-rate, brightness, contrast, accuracy, and quality-of-life improvements such as Smart-TV functions. With that said, you can't tell these by looking at the marketing materials, you would have to do some research on your own.Although, if we're being realistic, TVs and AV-Receivers that take advantage of next-gen gaming are not quite here yet (HDMI 2.1, FreeSync2). And it'll take them a year or two to hit the mainstream, or even budget units. So it again, makes little sense to buy something you might regret soon (this happened to me during the HDMI 1.4 vs HDMI 2.0 transition, and I actually went from a crap-4k to a quality-1080p TV, and thankfully it was the right call).
TL:DR = don't just look at buzzwords, look at reviews from professionals/other buyers.
You'd be better off saving to spend at least $1k. It makes a huge difference. With the specs you're looking for, you're not gonna get something good for under $650.
If you haven't got an existing sound setup, you'd probably need to invest in a soundbar as well especially on a cheap TV else your overall experience wont be worth the price of the PS5.
This one from Big W when you can find it in stock, Ive had mine for over a year now and the performance is great, Android TV with 4k, 60hz and HDR

I've been watching stock to get a replacement bedroom tv (older samsung plasma with lines appearing across the screen, its lasted a lot longer than most) they are back in stock for delivery - I just ordered one.
Keep an eye out on market place and gumtree, you'll find someone upgrading to an OLED, just a bit more leg work, and bit more risk.
But if that's the budget, then that's the option I'd go with.
Hisense if the budget can stretch a bit
