Gaggia Classic Coffee Machine for $251 Delivered from Amazon.co.uk

50

Was searching through a coffee machine replacement and found the Gaggia Classic on amazon.co.uk delivered for around $250 AUD (It came out to £163 total for me in the checkout as it removes vat but adds express shipping in it). There's some for £189 and then there's some for £169 (which you should pick if you don't mind waiting). It will take a few weeks for delivery but it is new, 220-240v compatible but you will need a power adapter to convert from UK to Aussie plugs (ebay).

Yes, I know it has aluminium boilers, but for $250, a commercial grade group head and other quality components included, I don't think you can go wrong. Apparently pulls pretty good shots too.

        • That's strange, they upped the price to £189.

I just ordered one for £163 delivered yesterday!

        • Looks like Amazon UK upped their pice last night, I managed to get one just after midnight last night at for list price of £169.00 (£140.83 after VAT removed, £163.41 total including shipping).

  • Just wondering would this coffee machine help in practicing coffee making for commercial use?

No. It would be like going from driving a moped to driving a V8. These small machines aren't very powerful when it comes to pump strength, particularly for steaming milk. You'd need to get something like a vibiemme domobar junior at the minimum for something similar to a commercial machine. This would be ok for practicing getting your dose and grind right though - but you'd need to pair it with a decent grinder.

In addition, the default pump strength and baskets for these is way too high. You'd probably want to reduce pump strength (turning an internal screw), get a standard filter basket, and consider replacing steam wand with a Sylvia wand. (Note: I have done all of these, on reflection, I should have gone for Sylvia instead)

Check out google or coffeesnobs.com.au for gaggia classic mods. But at this price, pretty unbeatable. Agree with Old el paso, need a decent grinder to go with it. Breville Smart Grinder is probably best bang for buck is wanting to go cheaper.

  • I had one of these for 5 years before upgrading to a Sylvia. They're good machines if you can get them for the 300aud mark. Pros— commercial sized group head and portafilter. Cons — smallish aluminium boiler means poorer mlk frothing. Make sure you use filtered water or descale the machine regularly. Mine choked up after 5 years, with the boiler be full of scale which had to be cleaned out.

  • Damn, I had one added to my basket last night before the price went up and went to pay for it now only to find it 20 pound more. I have emailed Amazon asking if they can do it for the cheaper price.

Use uk.camelcamelcamel.com to see Amazon UK price hikes. It's great and may show this item goes up or down (or even if this was an especially great price). Useful tool for Amazon US or UK!

I pasted in the URL above and the graph is interesting. That's the lowest price (before hike) aside from Black Monday.
