Best to avoid being in pain (and avoid taking pain killers to the point you get rebound headaches - I got there once and it was not good).

  • ah depends, if i have kicked my toe usually screaming and swearing
gunshot or stab wound i opt for heroin, who has the time to wait around for a prescription & with heroin the profits stay within the community unlike pfizer etc

another gem of a thread huntress, i hope this is as entertaining as your "doctors refusing to see patients" one, curious if these two threads are related

      • sigh *

I guess they are probably semi related
I suspect the significant amount of pain I am living with at the moment may be related to the problem I am having trouble finding a doctor for

I dont know from your weird tone if you're trying to be a douche and imply something snarky or not.

      but for the record;
It is not a pain specialist or anethetist I can't get in to see
as I said it is a neurosurgeon or a neurologist - they all seem to be uninterested in my problem
And I don't have a history of drug abuse or opioid dependence / addiction or drug seeking putting doctors off

Depends what it is, if serious goto ER, or GP if less severe.

    If not serious, Panamax.

If it is emotional, time should heal such pains and talk to a friend (if they are not the cause!).

If you have persistent pain it may or may not be able to be relieved. Unfortunately for some people, even if a cause is identified it’s not always possible to treat pain. In these cases it’s learning to live with the pain to have the best possible quality of life. For persistent pain there are a number of public clinics, as well as online courses and books.

Having said that some types of persistent pain/recurrent pain can be treated/managed with medication, surgery (or other procedures) or manual therapies. This really comes down to the type of pain and is best discussed with a doctor (though you mentioned you are having difficulty with this). eg the options for migraine are going to be different to neuropathic pain or gastrointestinal pain.

For me personally what I’ve found helpful for different types
    - Migraine - aspirin (I like the asproclear brand, taste wise), but there’s a whole lot of reasons why aspirin might be a bad/terrible idea for some people. I once gave myself a stomach ulcer after a series of terrible headaches and taking aspirin everyday. There’s also some brain conditions where taking aspirin would be a terrible idea.
    - Musculoskeletal pain, massage, gentle exercise, stretching.
    - general headache - paracetamol

Any kind of medication even otc is best to discuss with a doctor and/or pharmacist.

After many years of pain relief medication and MRI's for constant headaches, along with back pain. I was prescribed Endep. its helped tenfold with the headaches and depression. And there is no "high" you may get from other pain medication.

Maybe something that is you can have a chat to your doc about.

    • +1 for recommending Endep. I've used it to help manage constant headaches for a few years now.

  • I used Endone for about 6 months straight (which I probably shouldn't have) for severe pain. I've been told that it's like "legal heroin". I've got to say though, the withdrawal symptoms after that were not very nice.

    • What are you taking/doing now? I take lyrica but I have nerve pain, it dulls things. An SNRI is used to help chronic pain sometimes too

Lucky for me the pain is pretty much gone now. I did try Lyrica as well, but that didn't seem to do very much for me. I kept some endone for days where the pain might be unbearable, but I haven't had one of those for a long time

        • Lucky you. I'm looking to have neurosurgery soon. Unfortunately my issue is not covered under the public healthcare system, despite being a very significant problem.

Sometimes I don't understand this country, lol.

          • @Oofy Doofy: My pain was from surgery and it lasted longer than expected. I can't comment on neurosurgery because I know nothing about it, but I'm glad my surgery was covered. I think it would've cost me about $200K if I had to pay for it out of my own pocket! ouch!
