ALDI 1.5TB External NAS $99 (Ferntree Gully store VIC)

I was in Aldi FTG yesterday and they had a stack of these for $99.
Previously they were advertised at $129 back in November and that price was received quite well.

  • Yeah, I saw these at my local for this price too. I also thought they represent good value for money at $99! :)

  • Thanks for the post dirtybird , picked the last one up from Beaconsfield today for $99..

  • Picked up the last one from South Preston Aldi. Haven't set it up yet but really excited by the value!

Thanks dirtybird for the heads up!

  • I knew the price was gonna come down!? This item was originally $129 at Aldi catalogue. I thought " that price will come down in the future for sure! You can so tell!

  • +1

    none at Hornbsy :-(

  • I'm a little confused, why is this considered a good price? I bought a 2tb western digital external about 6 months ago for $99. I've noticed a big price increase in HD's of late…. anyone care to fill me in on the reason for this?

    • It's a NAS, not just a dumb external disk.

    • Yes, it's a NAS. A Network Attached Storage device. You connect it to your router and access your files across the home network. It also has USB ports that you can connect other USB drives to, and then also share those over the network.

The most common use is as a media server - you keep the files on your "mini-server", rather than lugging a USB Hard Drive between rooms.

I have a 2-bay NAS as my media server, and it feeds the lounge room but is physically back in my office. Plus I have a couple of other NAS elsewhere in the house which are primarily for "local storage" however they are all still accessable from other computers (and via wireless) if we need to copy files to or from them.

My backups are also to another NAS (I just leave it in-situ, but if I was dilligent I would swap Hard Drives every week rather than simply taking one down to my mum's place every few months when I remember to.

      • I also have two NAS devices, one as the main and the other as a backup. I have Synology devices which for me work great. Also the 'main' device I have eSATA drive for local backup. So every morning I have 3 copies of everything.

Then I also use portable HDs as off-site backup - I leave one in the office, and have one at home, and I switch them every week or two.

To not be concerned about what happens with my data if I lose a drive on the train/bus, I use disk encryption. Basically I followed this www.hutsby.net/2011/05/getting-started-with-truecrypt-and-os….

Truecrypt is free and works on Mac, and Linux.

Thats gives me 5 copies. Paranoid? Perhaps.

        edited for poor grammar.

  • hey guys does anyone know if these 99$ NAS are still available ?

Stocks in Melbourne? ITs a pretty good deal
