  • A few good deals in that catalogue!

  • seems like a good deal, any reason you didn't link to the Aldi website instead though?

    • +1

This catalogue (26th Nov) isn't available on the Aldi website yet.

  • Better off just getting an iomega iconnect and plug your own external Hd's in " if you have them ".
    http://go.iomega.com/en/products/network-storage-desktop/wir…

Got mine from ebay ages ago $87, can plugin 4 external drives and it network shares them " love it " i have 2x2TB Wd's " button press syncs them " and a 500gb portable.

Edit: and my WD HDLive sees them no problem

    • +4

Yeah but speed will be bottlenecked at USB2.0 speeds.. A NAS would transfer at faster speeds over the network.

      • +1

        Isn't USB2.0 480 Mbit/s whereas Ethernet is 100 Mbit/s? Just a bit confused.

[Edit: Now looking into it, it really depends whether your router supports Gigabit or not, otherwise its indifferent, but then again you would have to see how fast the wireless transfer speeds are on that device.]

    • +2

omg this product is so crap and so slow
and its a hassle setting it up
i would recommend every one not to buy this

      • i was referring to the iomega iconnect, whoever negged me, do you have one? whats your opinion on it?

        • Bugger, my bad. I mistakenly thought your comment was referring to the Aldi NAS… :S

Sorry about the neg. I would revoke it but the system wont let me :(

      • LOL, you're trying to shorten the queue at your local Aldi are you?

  • Need more specs. Wonder if this will support Squeezebox server?

Did quite a bit of searching trying to find something about this one, but, if its a "medion life P89626" (which i suspect it may not be because everything about it refers to 2tb, but close) then its got features alot of NAS have. It does have a USB, its arm based (no supprise), has web access, a bittorrent client and some form of backup software which various pages suggest it'll backup your pc automatically (not just itself). Does DLNA, USB printers, etc. Some say its passive cooled, others say its active.

you'll need google translate, but a few of the sites that give some minor details:
    http://www.jupiter42.de/nl/?p=4037
    http://www.reviewcenter.de/index.php?option=com_content&view…
    http://market.saturn-russia.ru/blog/2011/08/31/medion-life-n…

And lastly, there a huge image of it here which does indeed show a little usb icon on it:

    • Here's more specs:-

It's a dual core ARM processor, dual USB ports, gigabit ethernet, torrent client etc. Is it squeezeboxable? Dunno.

It would appear that the imminent release (in Europe) is also the 1.5TB unit. Perhaps since the NAS was launched in September with 2TB installed that drives are a bit scarce on the global market.

3 year warranty in Europe but 1 year here.

      Cheaper price here.

  • Can only fit one hdd in it?

  • Would this be good for a Mac Time Machine backup?

    • sure, why not?

      • I found some generics dont work well with macbooks

    • Not perfect; I think there's some technical stuff involved in getting a non-Apple NAS to work with time machine software, or at least there was when I tried with my Iomega Home Media NAS drives. Did manage to get it working eventually though.

    • 2TB is cheaper? Link or it didn't happen.

      • Agreed.
        Would love a link.

        • +2

Why are you comparing a USB interface storage device with a network attached storage device? Apples and Oranges mate.

Connect this bad boy to your modem router and all your devices on the network can access it.

        • you have linked to a completely different product…

        • +3

I'm not comparing anything. I'm just stating that you can get a 2TB HDD for cheaper than $129, that's it.

LOL….A NAS and an external HDD are two totally different products…..

Get back to us after reading this…

          http://lmgtfy.com/?q=what%27s+the+difference+between+a+NAS+a…

        • -8

          @andy19363
Well yes, a 1.5TB and a 2TB HDD would be different products.
          @ash2000
I'm well aware what the difference is. As I said, most routers will have that function built in these days.
If not and you actually need it, buy a $20 adapter. Still cheaper per GB and overall.

        • +3

By your logic a Microserver is no better than an external hard drive hooked up to a router. Does a typical router offer FTP and SMB or even a USB port? I think you're just trolling.

        • Most routers have USB now? Oh please…I have a Billion 7800N router it doesn't have one and it's still a current model. None of my parents routers have them and I'm yet to see a Telstra/Bigpond issued model that does so. I bought a TP Link for a friend only a few months back and it didnt have it. You've got no idea what you are on about, especially when you consider not everyone actually has a new router anyway…

        • to give a fairer comparison… this is mwaves current deal on a 2-bay dlink nas (130-ish) but without storage…

          http://www.mwave.com.au/sku-30060687-D_Link_DNS_320_ShareCenter&153;_Pulse_2_Bay_Network_Attached_Storage(NAS)

This is probably a closer comparison, as its a single disk system including 1tb of storage but its $250… You can probably find them cheaper (nas + storage), but it wouldnt be easy without hitting ebay at the least.

          http://www.mwave.com.au/sku-22060353-Western_Digital_My_Book…

          @stewey

you'd be supprised how many have usb now. The cheapest i can think of is the tplink TL-WR1043ND which you can find around (and below) the 75$ mark (i have two, though mostly for playing with openwrt). Theres also the E2000/e3000 linksys (which i believe both have usb). Quite a few do actually carry usb these days though.

        • -2

          That's not a fair comparison. It's Mwave.

        • I still wouldn't call it most, there is a growing number though and in any case as I said most people would still have old routers and many just the standard Optus/Telstra issued Netgears, Thompsons,etc..

        • +1

          @WilHoward
Where can you buy a NAS adaptor for $20?

  • Sorry guys out of topic, I might get the Cofee machine $79 on the same catalogue.
    What do you guys reckon?
    Cheers.

  • was anyone able to find out if it would take more HDD than the 1.5tb it comes with?

    • It's a single bay NAS device.

You can attach an external USB drive if need be. Dual bay is overkill for most home/SOHO apps. Dual bay does not afford any extra security. If you want to back it up, attach an external drive, mirror it then go store the external drive elsewhere. If you had a dual bay….you'd still have to back it up to something external for piece of mind.

  • Any update on this one?

    • +1

      http://www.plxtech.com/products/consumer/nas7820

This is the chipset in it. Dual core 750 Mhz ARM. Probably 512 Mb of RAM. Dual USB (eg supports printer or external drives), SATA, PCIe.

      • I think it only has 128MB of RAM - from the UI report for memory usage it looks like 128MB total.

  • +ve for value. Better option than Iomega but can't speak to the quality of Aldi's electronics.

  • +2

All running nice and fast. Good value. Perfect for Ozbargainers.
Specs are as per speculated and has a Seagate Barracuda drive in it.
    Multitasking, no hint of freeze/stutter/pauses.

    • +1 to that.
Got mine here working 100% with Time Machine on my Mac.
Backing up 2 Macs at the same time, no slow down so far.

      • What's involved in getting Time Machine configured?

  • Mine seems to be going pretty good.. Just having some issues setting it up for external access. First time I've done DDNS and it said it worked, but times out! :( Other than that it does what it says :} need to go through the painstaking procedure of bringing across the media library and sorting it all out! :(

Oh. One thing I did notice was the torrent client seems to be slow. Super slow. Of course, maybe it was a dud torrent. Might test again another day!

  • Any model numbers or anything? Would be good to search online for firmware updates/hacks/etc

Is it a silent model, ie no fan. If there is a fan how loud is it etc

    • silent, passive cooled

  • Looks like DexTA and Revs per Min at whirlpool have worked out how to get the telnet open on the NAS. It looks like a Zyxel derivative.

  • Aldi in the city had a few when I was there yesterday. Picked one up.

They also had two pallets of the Aldi Expressi coffee machine.

  • Just like what other guys looked, external USB connection has some issues which look related to USB power. If I had a powered USB hub I could test it.. In addition, its web UI is somewhat sluggish for me.

I need a native file manager (not via Windows Explorer, nor Web) to transfer massive files directly & reliably from its external USB media to its local HDD. Actually there IS a bundled configuration manager, but it doesn't have a file manager. Instead, Web UI has that, which looks strange and sluggish. I cannot see any progress bar or something while copying massive files from external USB to local folder on the Web UI's file manager. The web file manager just said "I am busy". (Not to mention, internal file moving is just instantaneous so it's unlikely possible to see this issue for internal file moves.) You may say "why don't you copy files from your PC with that USB attached to NAS via network?" but my laptop is not able to use wired network. Transferring heavy media files via 802.11b/g is just a pain.

Even worse, sometimes the copy was terminated without any alert and sometimes external USB access went hang. And my new external 2TB USB 3.0 HDD (from Verbatim) takes almost 1min to be attached there every time and for that 1 min, the NAS itself is inaccessible also. I'm serious.

Anything other than that is almost perfect, but my original purpose was to back up a bunch of USB devices and set up redundancy using one of them. lol
