Brisbane Firms as Winner to Host 2032 Olympics

ABC is reporting that the IOC is expected to announce tomorrow that Brisbane is the sole bid city chosen for "exclusive negotiations" to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2032.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-02-24/2032-olympics-brisban…

Plenty of time between now and then, obviously, but do we really want / need to host the Olympics in Australia again?
There does seem to be plenty of existing infrastructure that can be upgraded or maintained for Olympic use, but there will still be lots of money spent in readiness.

Then the disruptions to the residents when the games are approaching / are held.

What is your view?

Brisbane should have gone for the winter games instead.

    • lol

Bobsled in boardies, true Cool Runnings.

    • Brisbane could actually do this. Look at Dubai with ski sloops indoors. There's a cost though.

Thank heavens I dont live in QLD, NSW is finally getting infrastructure projects that benefit the people, rather than a few elite souls, now the hangover from the "best ever" olympic games is finally gone from the treasury.

Whats worse than Cocaine sniffing athletes. Sports administrators who love to spend tax payers money and enjoy the benefits for themselves.

With all the pork barreling that Gladys is doing it benefits certain voters more than others.

Stick to what we're good at, let's just do the opening ceremony. Let New Zealand host the events.

    • +2

      I like that thinking

  • +4

So this is supposed to be good news?

    • +3

I don't think so, but wondered if I was alone in that.

What if you are a little kid just now, maybe with some sporting 'talent', and you work hard for years and years, and then you find out that you get to go to the Olympics (but it is in Brisbane).

    Here's an idea

Usain Bolt vs Beenleigh to Brisbane train

    • +2

How many junkies on the train?

      • +3

        The usual amount.

        • +1

Then the train will lose. Too heavy.

    • The All Stations or the Express?

      • both are shit and will lose

  • +2

Does Australia need to host another Olympic?

Like I understand that it'd increase tourism and it's like the sure way of getting a country on the spotlight globally for at least during that season. I never understood why a developed country would require an Olympic for that.

Eh, I am hoping the COVID situation doesn't continue until then, that's all I am hoping for.

    • Yes, housing construction is drying up due to covid and there's plenty of gullible proud volunteers who will work for free as we've seen with Sydney Olympics. Government purse gotta get lighter somehow.

What did you get out of the CommoGames a few years back? A tram on the GC?

    • +2

Look up "the Smith collective". Disgusting colourful apartments. That's what we got. Actually, I got a really easy run to work during th games, there was no one on the roads, was great.

      • -1

        I don't actually hate those apartments…

        • Really. They are an eyesore. Hate driving past them. Looks like British housing commision apartment blocks.

Edit - the website makes it look ok. I'll try get a picture next time I go past there of the reality of it.

    • Umm, excuse me, we also got some street lights on the M1 that spelled out GOLD COAST and can only be seen from a certain angle.

    Fake news

  • +1

check the other cities in the running
    $D$o$h$a$ has won it already

  • Best to plan a holiday to Brisbane just before or just after the Olympics if they host?

  • +1

Oh that's fantastic I'll be living there, be great to be able to see a few events live

  • +2

North and South Korea would have been epic.

    • +2

100 meter execution, or missile launching

    • ….and they could have done a companion Kdrama "The Bridge" on the 39th parallel!

Plus staged the Kim Jong Un Fitness to Govern Marathon

    • I'd feel sorry for whoever is doing the military service during that time.

  • +2

Some people will complain about anything they can, will be great to have the world focus on Brisbane for a few weeks.

      Fixed

Some people will complain about anything they can, will be great to have the world focus on Brisbane for a few weeks. /S

I saw a pretty interesting video on YouTube that is made by a town planner (City Beautiful) that suggested that to save money only select cities should host the Olympics and it should rotate between those cities, so the infrastructure actually gets re used rather than being expensive white elephants after the games are over.

If most of the infrastructure is already there, I think it can be a good opportunity to showcase Brisbane to the world, but if there is expensive infrastructure required to get it going, pass.

    • That idea of re-using infrastructure seems really rational to me.

But the idea that a major city in a developed country needs to host an Olympic Games to be 'showcased' to the world, I'm unconvinced of.

  • Better not be someone from NSW working there to build their infrastructure…they'd never get paid by the govt.

Brisbane, still 30 years behind Sydney.

    • -4

      Correction - 32 years :)

Would give Brisbane an excuse to build a purpose-built football (soccer) stadium that it's been crying out for for years.

Don't know if I'd be living there then, but I'd love to see it happen.

    • Probably a good facility to have, but it could be built without needing an excuse (which involves a lot more money).

      • +1

We've been asking for it for years but it seems the state government doesn't care for football much.

Brisbane Roar can't afford Suncorp anymore, hence the move to Redcliffe. When you put 10,000 into a 50,000 seater stadium, it kills one of the best parts of the game, the atmosphere.

A new $28 billion dollar black hole for Brisbane. After what is happening at Japan for the Olympics, it's an event that allows the IOC to take billions. It's all for them.

    What I just read is:

… the International Olympic Committee gave it the status of its preferred bidder early on Thursday morning.

    Preferred, not chosen.

    • That is aligned with the article I linked yesterday, isn't it? Or are other cities still in the race?

      • Thought Brisbane was the only serious bidder hence the preferred status. Most other places look to have put it on the back burner due to covid.

Seems like a near certainty now.

  • +1

No one gives a toss about Olympics anymore

  • Brisbane 2032, following Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028, mmmm. That's a return to small town mediocrity with a thump.
Paris will ooze style and modernity, LA is a shit place, but they'll put on a huge show with real stars. Brisbane?

    • Aren't the athletes the 'stars'?

      • absolutely, sports the winner. but the media will gush over the opening and closing ceremonies, like anyone cares.

  • I'm hopeful this will be a really good thing for Brisbane. This is the first time that a "region" has been allowed to be the host as opposed to a city, meaning existing facilities from the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast (and elsewhere in SEQ) can be used as well.

    • I assume you are from Brisbane or SEQ?
What do you see as being beneficial in hosting the games?
