I bought a 750w to power my 3080, but in saying that. Before it would boost, it would be hitting 1000mV and temps would see past 80c.
Under volting it to 789mV only saw a lost of 2-3 fps, so I'm still constantly getting 140fps in newer games on ultra graphics. So for the most part, if you underclock, which you should because it's a waste of power you don't need to worry. But there are lots of factors to this.
What's your CPU onggie? Results will vary for undervolting, you want to stress test your card and probably not go too low because you'll lose stability. Yeah 750W depending on the CPU (and other factors) may be fine but, these are huge power consuming cards even with undervolting, most CPUs these days you'd pair with a 3080 have 6 cores, if not 8, 10 or 12 so they consume more power under load too, better to be safe than sorry.
Recommended wattage for a 3080 is 750w, and 850w for the EVGA FTW3 cards
The recommended has to include all the crappy PSU out there, a respected name brand gold PSU at a lower capacity will be fine.
Yeah, you should definitely risk a $1200 card that's nearly impossibly to source, just to use a slightly cheaper psu. Solid idea.

You would only run this with a low-mid tier 3080, it'll trip on strix/ suprim, etc.
the price is $175.57 now, no longer a bargain.
If you are pairing with a 3080 be careful of the rest of the system, particularly which CPU because you may get power limited if you have a high power CPU and overclocked 3080 (it'll overclock itself as well with GPU boost).
