Do Dashcams Ever Get Their Owners in Trouble They Wouldn't Have Been in Otherwise?

Do Dashcams ever bite their owners?

Are they a bad gift for someone when you're not completely happy with their driving habits and abilities?
Or are they a good gift for bad drivers because they make them drive better? Or prove to them that they shouldn't drive?

Should you get one if your not confident in your own driving skills?

Should you get one as a learner driver?

Everyone should have one imo. Just don't give out the footage if it doesn't help your case (ethics aside if that's how you want to play it).

If the person sucks so bad at driving a dashcam gets them in trouble then you are doing a service to society to get them one. You should absolutely get one just like having comprehensive insurance you can sit back and relax.

      • Speeding doesn't necessarily make you bad at driving just bad at following rules.

    • Rear facing has been the most useful one for me.

Dude rolled in to me at the lights while playing on their phone.

      • Didn’t really matter what they were doing. Rolling into the back of your vehicle is ‘at fault’ anyway. I guess it’s just nice to stick it to them with a phone use fine as well though.

and who is going to issue them the fine? , police won't do anything.

the ONLY way you are going to get them with that is if they attend the scene due to a personal injury or damage to public property , and then you would have to somehow show the police there and then the footage and then they MIGHT fine said person.

no point going to the police station after the fact because they will tell you theres nothing that can be done.

unfortunately this isn't china where you can record someone and send the footage into the cops and get paid for it.

I give it 5 years before it is eventually mandatory for car manufacturers. The Tesla system for example is great.

  • Take the memory card out straight away.

    • If the cop writes down on the report that the dashcam was non-functioning I wonder if the footage itself is still useable.

      • I could be wrong, but not providing it for evidence in a traffic infringement investigation should not preclude it for later being used as evidence in an insurance claim/civil dispute.

Best investment is getting a comprehensive insurance and a car with higher safety ratings for learner driver.
Dashcam is usually benefits for insurance claims, when you are not at fault.

may be they can review the footage from time to time as a learning experience be a better driver.

  • It's bound to of happened a few times.

common occurrence at round a bouts where people don't know that they need to give way to anyone already in the round a about.

driving towards a roundabout at speed and sees a car on the left, doesn't slow down.
falsely assumes that the car on left will give way.
The car on the left enters round about first.
    bang.

driver on right submits dash cam footage clearly showing person on left entered first.

Insurance company used it on a friend to show that he was speeding by counting the time lines were passing, and therefore lessened their pay out

    • why did he give the footage?

      • not sure they towed the car when he was in the ambulance so I guess they had it.

you arent going to climb out of the ambulance to rip out the sim card

  • Use your brain. If you're in a situation where your cam could screw you, do what you have to do with the SD card…

      .

  • I'm aware of a case in Perth where 3 cars got impounded because the police argued that "spirited" driving with mates was street racing after watching the dash cam footage.

I agree with the "lost" SD card idea in certain instances.

Micro sd are small enough to swallow with a swig of water. Can always retrieve it later.
