Tango Energy now providing gas

Just a PSA, Tango Energy are now selling gas as well as electricity.

Did a comparison to my current provider (Red Energy) and based on last 12 months usage, would be a $500 saving (partly that high because of wife’s ridiculous heating use).

Hopefully this could be of use to some.

  • Every time a competitor enters the market the price goes up.

Productivity is lowered as another business duplicates everything that every other competitor is doing and a smaller pool of customers pays the cost.

The ACCC head, the last person in the world who is going to say this, described this as "severely damaging" the Australian economy.

  • If I recall correctly, the letter I received about this listed a daily gas pricing structure that made it difficult to compare against my current gas supplier. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me that this pricing structure was created with exactly that in mind.

    • Interesting. I plugged my address into the website and Tango has the same structure (usage 1, usage 2, balance) as my existing retailer. I just assumed something like that would be controlled by the wholesaler.

In saying that, one of the things I like about Tango is they don’t have this % off nonsense. That % off is the bane to comparing prices.

    • Gas can be a bit confusing to compare in general, it seems Tango's figures are more about breaking it down to a daily average while other suppliers work on a billing cycle total. So Tango works on prices for 1st 100mj a day, next 100mj a day, next 1200mj a day and then another figure for any energy over the average 1400mj a day.
So you need to look at your gas bills from your current retailer and take the average mj a day figure (normally top of the bill) and apply it to Tango's pricing structure. eg if your average is 440 mj a day then
      100x 1st 100mj price
      100x next 100mj price
      240x next 1200mj price
      add daily supply charge
Then multiple that total by the number of days your billing cycle you are comparing to compare the bills. Ensure you do 1 winter bill cycle and 1 summer bill cycle.

Personally Tango was a little cheaper for me but I'm not sure it's enough to warrant having my electricity and gas coming from differen't suppliers.

      • I'm with Lumo and the pricing structure is similar to Tango. Had a look and Tango's prices are pretty competitive so going to ring them up tomorrow to confirm.

  • I looked at the pricing structure for Multinet.

Didn't like it. More expensive than AGL.
