Porting old number to new sim card

So recently sold my phone and took out my simcard obviously but when i arrived back home i realised it was nolonger in my pocket, so i got a new sim (colesmobile) and tried porting old number but they require a text to the old number to confirm the porting, im lost this must be something new? I rang them up and they told me i cant port without acess to old simcard.. im wondering is this the same with all providers? Because im willing to switch keep my number.

How else can they prove it is yours and that you are not trying to steal someone else’s identity.

    • So if you lose your sim its a lost cause?

Per comment below, speak to your current (lost sim card provider) to prove who you are to get another sim issued/transfer to another one of their “blank” sims, then port to your (new) coles mobile sim.

I've had this problem. Get a new SIM card with your current provider first.

    • Wouldnt the same thing apply?

Your current provider has your info that matches the number.

This is not new. It has been at least 3-4 years.

  • You need current sim. Contact your current provider so they can transfer your number to the new sim so it's active. Then do the port.

SMS during port is very common now (maybe even standard?)

It is now required by law

  • ask for a replacement sim from your current operator. They will send you a new sim for the same number and deactivate the old sim card.

      • don't worry, it happens to all of us in a panic :D

  • this must be something new?

It looks like only last year additional verification requirements were imposed on telcos when porting numbers. See "The Telecommunications (Mobile Number Pre-Porting Additional Identity Verification) Industry Standard 2020".
