Sony BDPS380 Blu-Ray Player $99 with Free Delivery from Dick Smith Electronics

50

I've just noticed the Sony BDPS380 Blu-ray player is now $99 with free delivery from Dick Smith Electronics.

The previous best price I've seen on this model was $118 a few weeks back. Yes, I agree that the BDPS370 was better (it was DLNA compliant) but that model is harder to find than an honest politician.

Beat the crowds and order online!

The Sony BDPS480 is also a good choice. Only $143 delivered with 3D and DLNA. If you don't need the 580's built in wireless, it's a good pick.

  • Wouldn't the toshi from HN be the better deal it can be made region free this one can't

    • …but can you use your smartphone as a remote?

    • Horses for courses… BTW, the offer on the Toshiba expires today so who knows what price Gerry will put on it now.

Also, the Sony has Internet TV functionality (apart from the ubiquitous Youtube you can watch ABC iView) whereas the Toshiba (AFAIK) just uses the ethernet port for BD-Live and firmware updates and if you flash the firmware to make it region-free DVD and remote-changeable Blu-ray region you may want to be a tad careful about future firmware updates.

  • Are Sony BD players better than the similarly priced Samsung?

    • Yep.

      • Thanks, could you provide a little details on why they are better?

          IMO:
          - better user interface
          - better remote control design
          - better support for DLNA
          - better support for media encoding formats
          - better support for iTV like iView and SBS on Demand
          - more online video services supported

        • Does anyone know if the Sony BD Players can be made region free for DVD easily without needing a one4all remote?

Every Sony Blu-ray player I've bought has been region free for DVD out of the box.

        • Wow that's good news indeed. I'd wish the salespeople were more knowledgeable about the products they sell - none of them knew this. Thank you once again.

        • @Chris McMahon "Every Sony Blu-ray player I've bought has been region free for DVD out of the box."

However they are not all like that, my brother has a Sony Bluray player he got free with a Sony TV it is not region free for DVD and cannot be made so without a one4all remote.

Interesting. I just checked one of the boxes my Sony S370s. It had tape over the seal that said:
"This product has been opened by Sony Australia Quality Assurance".

I'm pretty sure this is how to tell a region unlocked player. So if you're buying one retail, check the box to make sure.

The only Sony blu-ray player I've seen that wasn't DVD region-free was one that was purchased by my sister in the Sanity deal (spend $200 on blu-rays and get a Sony BDPS370 free). After Googling for a solution and finding they all needed the special One4All remote I ended up turning to ebay and found a UK company called "DVD Chips UK" (www.dvdchips.co.uk) selling a small one-use remote-style device. You pointed it at the player and pressed a single button… it shut the player down and when you turned it ack on it was DVD region-free. Absolutely brilliant!

They no longer appear to be selling on ebay, just via their website and the price is nearly double what they cost previously (GBP20 instead of GBP12).
