  • Not a bad price, any recommendations for paired motherboards. Been out of the Intel loop for a while.

    • +11

Depends on the size of motherboard and future upgradability, I chose an ATX motherboard with 4 RAM Slots and decent amount of PCIe slots, but still in budget.
you can choose between B460, H470, Z490 Chipset, with B460 as the cheapest option to the highest of Z490.

Biggest difference will be the memory speed support and PCIe lanes available with the higher chipset and overclocking potential on Z490 chipset. But keep in mind, you need K series processor to overclock which is no longer a cheap option.

      I went with https://www.umart.com.au/Asrock-H470-Steel-Legend-LGA-1200-A…

Decent enough for my use case, gaming and a small hobby of photo editing. I chose that because 4 Ram Slots, decent enough VRM, future 11th Gen support, PCIe 4 when paired with 11th Gen CPU.

Hopefuly that helps you a bit.

      • +1

Will 4 ram slots ever be needed for the average user? I thought that way before but then ram got larger and cheaper.

Like you I went for an asrock h470, but itx size

Also I think h410 is the cheapest chipset

        • I will generally put more RAM later on, I have 2x8GB at the moment but cannot justify 32GB for now. But I started to see FFXV actually uses 13GB, which is ridiculous. So for me it is useful to have extra slots for future upgrade.

Agree with with H410 to be the cheapest but not by much it seems, compared with B460.

If you've been out of the Intel loop for a while keep in mind that these F processors don't have integrated graphics. You need a dedicated gpu

    • +1

Hey mate, I can recommend the MSI z490 A-Pro. A very capable budget friendly board that can easily handle up to a 10700k and even a 10900k/10850k if your case has good airflow to help out the VRM's on the board. If you want more info, look up Buildzoid on Youtube.

Insane value. Compared to the Ryzen 5 5600X for over $500 this is a no-brainer in my opinion.
If you're prepared to pay that price - you should be stretching for an 8,10 or even 12 core CPU.
If you are able to make do with a 6 core cpu like the Ryzen 5, there's no reason why you couldn't make do with this CPU for less than 40% the price.

The >$500 Ryzen 5 CPU is only 4% better for gaming ffs

    • +11

hmmm not sure about userbenchmark comparisons (surprised they havent got the 5600X being beaten by i3 hahaha)… lol overall agree with you that this is better value for gamers, especially if you will mainly be GPU bound … :)

      • +1

This is a better value for everyone, not just gamers. AMD dropped the ball big time with pricing and availability on the new 5000 series.

        • AMD dropped the ball big time

Eh, I think it's not a bad business strategy. 5000 series is selling well regardless.

It's just not good value with prices like this on the intels, but for average joe, keeping up with which CPU is best is a burden, especially with all these COVID shortages putting some parts way above RRP.

At least this way AMD gets some of the margin scalpers and retailers are enjoying.

    • +11

I'll upvote cos this is the correct answer, but userbenchmark should be banned..

CPUbenchmark is the only site that should be used

      • +3

Hardware unboxed has a solid comparison of 10400F vs 3600 vs 5600 which also shows somewhat negligible differences at 1440p+

        • +3

I believe it was GPU Bottlenecks at high Resolutions

          • @vanyellow: Ofc. You should bottleneck with your gpu at 1440p or above, and if not you have a very weak cpu for your gpu

      • CPUbenchmark? Isn't that still based entirely on Passmark scores? That's not really indicative of actual gaming performance.

All the best benchmarks are in youtube videos now. (Sponsorship money there is better I guess?)

    • +1

Who'd have thought Intel would become the budget cpu king!

      • +1

AMD be like "you're standing in my spot"

      • +1

Yep the i3 10100f is crazy performance for the price

  • This makes the $240 I paid in December a joke…. sigh

  • +2

My recommendation for a board to go with this is the ASRock Z490M Pro4 - $199 from MSY if you can find one. At least it will allow running RAM at full speed which makes a real difference with these CPUs - and it will allow upgrading to 12th gen in the future.

Something about paying more for a mobo than a CPU is a bit grating, though…

    • +3

Pretty sure the Z490 will not be compatible with 12th moving to a new LGA1700 platform completely.

      • +2

oops sorry i meant 11th gen!

    • +3

Just be careful with the Asrock Z490 boards they were pretty bad, review wise… for this cpu they are fine but if you want to upgrade next gen or one with higher power delivery needs I’d def think twice and do a bit of research on them…. although I think Intel is opening up lower chipsets to mem oc so if true it’s probably better matched to a lower chipset… cpu can’t OC anyway

    • At least it will allow running RAM at full speed

What do you define as full speed

      • +1

anything faster than 2666mhz, which is the limit for these i5 chips on H410, B460, H470 boards.

        • Oh damn maybe I should've gotten a z490 :P

          • +1

@ChadHominem: Hard to say - in a budget build, $100 here and there matters. My preference would be to bundle this CPU with a cheap H410 board and a cheap kit of 16gb DDR4 RAM, and any graphics card up to say an RTX 3060 Ti. But with some people seemingly willing to pay nearly $200 for a B460 or H470 board, you would be mad not to just go for Z490 instead, for the RAM overclocking opportunity.

            • @xyron: The B460/H470 boards are much better equipped usually. Wifi, more USB ports, audio, bios switches, better VRMs (meaning you could run a 10850F at full all core loads in the future maybe?) etc. It depends on how much you value those QOL improvements vs the better performance a barebones Z490 gives you.

              • @[Deactivated]: plenty of reasonably priced Z490 boards that include all that guff as well.

                • @xyron: Which ones? The reasonably priced z490's all seem very bare bones. Trying to match something like the Astrock H470 Steel legend, or the Gigabyte Aorus pro B460-ac, on Z490 and you're spending $100-150 more than those boards cost.

                  • @[Deactivated]: H470 Steel Legend is $239

                    Z490 Steel Legend is $269

$30 difference for RAM overclocking well worth while.

                    • @xyron: You can get the H470 Steel Legend board much cheaper than $239 ($179 at umart atm) whereas the Z490 boards you can't. It's around $90 difference. And even the steel legend doesn't really have many USB ports which can be a pain

                      • -1

@[Deactivated]: Even if that is the case, and Z490 boards never go on sale (which is also incorrect), a basic Z490 board is still going to be comparable with any mid-spec H470 board. you aren't getting quality VRMs and cooling on the sub-Z lines because they can't overclock. You are just paying for flashy lights and wifi (which can be added with a $20 M.2 card on the Z490M Pro 4, by the way).

If you want to keep trying to justify overspending on a B/H series motherboard, go for it.

                        • @xyron: The Z490 Steel Legend and Z490 Pro 4 have shit VRM's too, that's the problem. If you want good VRMs + good features on Z490 you have to really spend money.

Please, go look through https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/z490, there are no good deals on Z490's.

And hey if you want to use a $20 M.2 300N card, having paid an extra $100 for your motherboard with 4 USB ports and still shitty VRM's, all so you can get that 1-10% more performance only sometimes. by all means, go for it

                          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Ended up with a MSI Z490M MPG Gaming Edge Wifi from Shopping Express for $299

  • Make me wonder why i5 9500 is still in the $300 mark…

    • +2

Mainly because you would need a MB upgrade if you had an i3 on the last gen then your options are only other 9th gen… and probably limited supply

    • Must be a typo. Item description says 10th Generation Intel Core i5 Processors

        Obviously

is that like a gen 1 cpu? 14nm—-

      • No, gen 10 but lower than the 10100F
        Core i1 1040F

  • If the msi z490 a pro was on special too id bite in an instant.

  • Wouldn't mind more of the $99 10100f sales…

    • I was looking to upgrade 2nd hand then saw the performance of the 10100f for how cheap it is. People are asking the same price for a 4th Gen i7. I'm in no rush so I'll wait a month or 2 for rocket lake and see what the prices do.

      • Imagine if it goes below $99 when new CPUs release…. What a time to be alive

  • +1

Aahhhhh! Too bad I paid $200 for an i7 8700 second hand. Was comparing with this but price was $219 at the time. Got lucky on the h360 board though only 60 buck including shipping from umart.

    • Yeah mobo price plays a big part

  • Out of the building PC loop.

Would this be good for a music production PC..?

Lots of VSTs, Samples, effects, etc

    • +1

I reckon this would be fine. Fam member produces radio programs fine with a lesser CPU, just make sure you use 16gb RAM and decent SSD.

      • Cheers 👍🏻

  • Great CPU. Good for those who want similar performance to the R 3600. Highly recommend!
