Mutti Finely Chopped Tomatoes 400g Can - $1 @ Woolworths

1240

OzBargain's favourite canned tomato is on sale at Woolies. It's just the chopped stuff that's down to $1 this week, the Whole Peeled cans are $1.30.

People have often said that for canned tomatoes you should only buy whole peeled as the chopped stuff is of lower quality, but in Kenji Lopez-Alt's (of Serious Eats/Food Lab fame) recent videos he mentions that for a good brand of canned tomatoes, they tend to use the ripest tomatoes for the canned crushed variety so they actually taste better. I'd say worth taking a stab at for Mutti.

It makes sense - riper tomatoes would be easier to process. Tomato binning.

The Mutti Polpa (finely chopped tomatoes) is easily 100% better than any other brand I've tried. I don't know why or how but it is. They do say that they don't use any yellow green parts of tomatoes, so what you get is all red. But it's singularly better tasting than other brands, and seems consistent too — with other brands you sometimes get batches that don't taste so good.

  • I've still got a whole bunch of the aldi italian diced tomatoes, they go alright honestly, but nothing compared to Mutti.

    Thanks OP.

  • I have been trying to work out why they are so good.
I can only suggest that they don't contain citric acid, such as other canned tomatoes. They are picked at the perfect ripeness maintaining perfect ph, and without the need for citric acid.

Most canned tomatoes have citric acid acid to adjust their ph, and enable them to last in the can. Citric acid is essentially lemon juice, and therefore makes the tomato taste sour.

The best brand by far. If I had to say something negative (yes, I'm that guy), I hate that the single cans don't stack. The double pack from Coles is much better as they stack nicely.

    • another observation, coles condensed milk tins dont stack, woolies does

  • Are these good for adding to pasta sauce?

    • Yes, I usually add one or two cans of Mutti chopped tomatoes + one jar Val Verde Passata + lots of finely chopped veggies when making a large batch of bolognese sauce (800 grams mince)

      • +2

You should use the Mutti passata too. The Val Verde one is so bitter

Great, Got 6 cans and some stares… Well.. they last till 2023 anyways..

    • +2

should've grabbed the whole tray then, 6 cans is nothing! lol.

I regularly buy at least 4 cans of tomato's when i get them, not so much the Mutti brand though. Maybe they were Mutti snobs?

    • +1

I use 5 cans in each batch of pasta sauce I make, so let them stare.

It takes a real special someone to stare you down for buying $6 worth of tinned tomatoes…

Whats the covid restrictions in WA? varies store by store

  • These are great for a bolognese sauce. I use passata for tomato when making Indian food though.

  • If you have a Harris Farms nearby these chopped ones are $0.99 a tin, picked up a 12 pack (they had plenty) this afternoon. Never tried them before but ozbargain rates them so happy to try.

Meh'… I rather go for organic tinned tomaotes

I have usually bought Annalisa brand which are quite good - love the can colour as well :). They are def. superior to generic brands - and only just found out about Mutti which are on par for sure. Anyhow this article rates Mutti as right up there - so for a buck a can - get in!!

Want to try these since everyone raves about them … but over 10x sodium of other cans (120mg / 100g)!

    • +1

Probably why they taste better than others,

  • mmmm Mutti, just like Mother used to make…
