1 Month Free 5G Home Internet + $0 Setup Fee for Month to Month Plans Starting from $75/Month @ Optus (Selected Areas)

940

I've been considering getting on to 5G for awhile now, but didn't want to commit to a contract and month-to-month previously required a $200 set up free to cover the cost of the modem.

Now that they've dropped the startup fee it's pretty much risk free for me to trial the service. If it's inconsistent I can just cancel without too much of a loss.

Available to eligible customers in selected areas. New services only.

Upon cancellation of any plan, whether a month-to-month or 24-month plan, you must return the Optus-supplied 5G device to us in good working order within 30 days of cancellation or you will pay a non-return fee of $330.

  • If I tried someone’s iPhone 12 with Optus postpaid 5g plan in my house, connected to 5g data, how close would that be to the speeds that I would achieve with Optus wireless broadband? Could it be issued as an indication as to the speed/ stability of connection? Thanks

Never got faster than 10kb/s with Optus, calls dropping out, so congested. As soon as I saw the word Optus I am running away.

    • So far were I've been Optus has been around 30-40mbps faster than Telstra.

  • We have 5G where I am but for some reason still says I’m ineligible :(

  • I'm aghast at all these ping numbers. My ping is always the same - 2 ms. (FTTP).

  • This would be perfect for me if i could actually get it but Optus are saying it’s not available at my address. HFC NBN installations have been delayed and I’m making do with a 1TB Tangerine 4G plan but really need unlimited

  • I have been an early sign up of this and had it for 12months now. Feel free to ask anything.

It is hugely location dependent. When I first got it, I was eligible but the nearest 5G tower was 1.4km away so could never connect. Optus then said I never should've been eligible. But still at 4G speeds and $70/mth unlim downloads I kept it…later a new 5G tower came online which is line of sight for me and 700m. I can get speeds of 400mb down sometimes and 50-60 up… example: https://www.speedtest.net/result/i/4376065176

This is only if I stand right at the modem using 5GHZ wifi though. I have a Nokia Wifi Mesh which is compatible with the modem they use, and 30m away I get typically speeds like this: https://www.speedtest.net/result/10775842779 130/70.

There has been a lot of firmware issues, modem faults, dropouts etc, so if you research and read stuff you will likely see bad comments, but it is us long term 'beta testers' that have helped Optus get this to a point its stable and they put the price up (a bit), good to see they have dropped the setup fee.

51 days 10 hours 19 minutes 45 seconds is my current uptime, so after my complaints I got a new modem and firmware all sorted, it is stable now.

I could also get NBN FTTN but my phone lines are old and speeds I got were 50/20, so this is way better, cheaper, faster, etc.

  • do you get a standard public IP with this? can you do port forwarding?

Considering this to replace my NBN as im paying $160 for NBN with 2 static IPs on 1000/50 plan and getting around 600-750/50

My phone on 5G gets 300-400/110-120….

Edit: I tried ordering but it seems it doesnt like apartments?
I entered a random address in Parramatta (maybe town hall or a church?) as the service address and became eligible. Changed delivery address to my office and will test it from home to see if I get comparable speeds to my mobile phone.

    • Unless something has changed very recently, it unfortunately will be on CGNAT.

Spent 1 hour with the Optus sales on the phone and signed up for 2 plans:
$90PM 5G home plan to replace my currently paying $59PM for FTTN from TPG
$30PM 5G 100G data mobile phone plan (half price)

I live in an apartment building, so I will try it out first and report back.

    • Looking forward to your report!

      • I have just returned the devices this morning through Australia Post. The cancellation process was rather easy.
Reason: no 5G signal at my home address, I was only able to get 4G LTE. The connection speed is similar to my 4G mobile phone which also using Optus 4G network. 100-150mbps if I place the modem on my balcony. 50-100mbps if I place the modem next to my window. The upload speed is quite poor as well, about 10-20mbs. Latency is between 17-22ms. The signal is rather unstable. I live in the CBD.
Compare to Optus 5G/4G network, my FTTN connection from TPG is very stable: 90mbps download, 40mbps upload, latency is 17ms.
The coverage of Optus is not as good as Telstra overall.

  • Thanks OP. Getting ~350/50 and ping 16-22.

  • Bought $75 plan online. Modem delivered in a day, getting ~110 download and ~ 40 upload speed. Living in an appartment and nearest tower is 0.8 km away.

  • When will the 1-month free discount appear on my bill?
The 1-month free charge will show as a discount on your first or second bill, depending on your billing cycle. If this discount hasn’t been applied by your second bill, please contact us on 1300 101 693.

How do I ensure the discount will be on the first bill?

    • If you're a new customer then it probably will be.

When I signed up for my 4G plan I already had an iPad plan with them and I was charged only for the number of days until my next bill instead of the full month. So all your services get billed on the same day. I'm guessing it's the same with 5G, which is why it's sometimes the second month, otherwise you'd only be getting the discount for a partial month which would be dodge.

  • 4g Speedtest out of 5g Network (40klm from closest 5g)

    https://www.speedtest.net/result/10905546980.png

    • At that speed, wouldn't it be better to go NBN?

I've had this Optus 5G before and even within 800m from the tower, the reception is flaky as. Some days I'm getting 3Mbps and some 370Mbps. But it's all about stability and reliability which the 5G doesn't give.

  • Are you sure Optus checks the address to ensure that the Modem is not used at another location?

My friend ordered it using a 5G location and has been using it for a year in a 4G only location more than 20 km away from the 5G location

    • They may/may not… but they clearly state in the terms & conditions that if found using the modem other than at the supplied address there's a chance they'll disable the device and demand it be sent back. Silly thing is that the '5G capable' address I used to get mine was only used to start the application, I used my 'non-5G capable' home address for everything else and everything seemed fine… the modem was delivered there and worked really really well on 4G so no probs at all. They even had my address recorded under the equipment location so yeah I'm pretty sure the initial address is purely used as a 'key' to unlock the rest of the application process and never referred to again.
