  • I remember reading Talon of the Silver Hawk back in 2003 when the invasion of Iraq occurred - “shock and awe” lol good times

One of my favourite trilogies from the entire Riftwar saga

  • Great series. Was my starting point into Riftwar (I thought it was standalone).

does his long running series never lose steam?

Be honest with me, are his books page turners? I read half of Magician a few times and could never finish it. Does the pace move faster later into the book? Some authors they start you off slow to set things up then dial it up to 10.

Other authors start there with no ramp up.

Have to remember how old these books are. He was writing an elegant epic fantasy for a more civilised age.

In any case, Magician is the best in the Riftwar series, so if you couldn't get through that, Feist isn't for you. While The Conclave of Shadows Trilogy is the second best of the Riftwar series, that's because it turns the power levels involved down to more what it was in the Magician series (the series in between had huge power creep issues), not because the writing is any different.

      • is the second half of magician the same pace as the first half?

I'm surprised that's his best book. I think it was his first book? Authors often get better with experience.

One of my most played games of all time was Betrayal at Krondor, which was set in the Riftware universe. I've been intrigued and looking into getting into his books for years now but could only dip my toes in. I've heard such good things about them too. I also know it's like more than 20 books. Is the quality maintained that many books in?

Maybe try grabbing it on audible and listen instead? They have the magician trilogy for the price of one book on there. If you have used audible before you can get 1 or 2 for free on signup.

Part of the reason it's the best in the series is it's where you meet the pivotal character. Memories of how Pug grows and the story develops makes it something you want to revisit.

It forms part of a trilogy, with another trilogy marking is counterpart co written by Jenny Wurts giving a parallel time line on the other side of the Riftwar. This is great for a twist on the writing style and a female perspective NOT written by a man. There are often giveaways when the writing isn't an author's comfort zone so this was good to see.

Other stories are great as they start in other series later on in the same universe. Eric VonDarkmoor is a great character. Some of the other ones almost die stuck in a quagmire of politics and intrigue that loses you interest but you get through it eventually.

I've read them all but I never finished Magicians End as I didn't want to close the story. I started from the beginning as audio books which is great if you do a lot of driving.

Anyway, if you can't get through book one then maybe it isn't for you. Mind you I read that when I was 13 so maybe it not aged well and it's too young for you at this stage. Part of the frustration must be the lack of big events or major leaps in skills (trying to be vague here) but it keep the stories from exhausting the interest early.

All books get faster as they go, it's part of the pacing. There's no Sanderson avalanche in the second half, but things do come together.

Epic fantasy from of that age tended to plod along rather slowly. Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, Belgariad, etc. They all spend ages worldbuilding before they can get the plot moving properly. That said, if pacing is your issue, then a lot of Feists books are more fast paced. Just not the major worldbuilding ones: Magician and the Conclave of Shadows trilogy (except maybe King of Foxes).

      • How necessary is the trilogy in between to read first? I have done the first trilogy.

        • The Conclave of Shadows Trilogy is actually a reboot of sorts, so you'll be fine jumping in here. A few old characters like Pug make an appearance, but they rarely take centre-stage. You might be confused as to how they got to where they are now, but the main story is easily understandable without that knowledge.

        • You can read most of his three to four book sets independent. If you go back though you might already know the outcome of some major events.

Part of the magic comes from knowing characters from other stories though, so you will miss out on some of the character development.

  • There’s about 30 or something in the entire series with the last book the magicians end - very good series especially if you want to get into fantasy.

    • did he seriously retire the series?

      • He is 75, maybe he wanted to retire?

        • good point.

GRRM is getting up there also. I wonder if he will retire before he finishes ASOIAF?

  • Note this is a Kindle Daily Deal - will only last a day or so.

  • Hoping to see the Legends of the Riftwar trilogy listed next

  • Thank you OP! I had stalled after the Serpent War trilogy. Time to continue :-)

  • This was a fun reboot to the series, just a bit of a shame Feist decided to recentre on Pug in the following series IMO.

    • by reboot do you mean that it discards the previous books and is a fresh new start?

      • Focuses on new characters, set in a place that's been mentioned but not visited by previous books.

The old characters are still around, but they only really get cameos

  • Pug in this?

    • +1

Yes he is. This is one of my top 3 series but also sad too.

  • Offer on Apple Books reverted to normal price.
