Which Graphics Card as a Stand-in until RTX 3080's Become More Available?

Looking to build a PC but the non availability of RTX 3080 Graphics cards and the expense of RTX 3090 cards has me thinking that I will build a system designed for an RTX 3080 but put a cheaper graphics card in it for now and then upgrade the card later when 3080's become more readily available.

If I do that, what type of card should I put in it now, knowing that the card will only be a stop-gap. I'll do some gaming on the card, have dual G-Sync monitors but obviously will adjust my expectations that I'm not getting high end graphics from a stand-in card. Where is the bang for buck for a stand-in card for a few months.

  • Take whatever your budget is in the interim, then get the best performing video card at that price point. its not rocket science.

  • If you absolutely must play games now, buy any cheap 2nd hand 10XX card and flog if after. My advice is be patient and use integrated graphics, until stock normalises.

Probably GTX1650 or 1650 Super is the best bang for buck card at the moment.

  • 1650 super gets the job done at 1080p.

Would not pay more than $250 for one.

  • If you still want to game probs 2nd hand 2070 supe

Any second hand Pascal card, AMD RX 500 series or 1600 series. Buy them second hand then sell them off with minimal loss.

These cards are almost fully depreciated — as in, their value isn't going to decrease much more, at least not until Nvidia or AMD release some budget offerings like RX 6700 or 3060 / 3050.

Just get an overpriced 3080 lol, you're gonna end up wasting so much effort to save a few bucks

  • 1650 Super

  • Easy answer. Get a 3090.

get 2 of the same GPU's and crossfire/SLI them,
then they don't have to be powerful cards,
but they will be cheap to buy

  • So I'am guessing you never figured out the problems with your watercooled system from your last post was the 2080 salvaged or junk or any of the parts for that matter surely it couldn't all be stuffed right given you had already replaced half of it.

    • Nope, salvaging bits out of it and putting them into a new build.

      • Fair enough what model 2080 is it, did it come with the waterblock or did you install it.
Assuming you are not going water cooling again pull of the waterblock put the original air cooler back on (if you have it) see if it works in your new build.

        • Originally came with fans, I pulled them off and put water block on, will try to find the fans and see if I can put them back on.

  • Of course you should try intergrated graphics first make sure its working without a potentially bad gpu.

If the 2080 is dead the 1650 S is supposedly the best price to performance but it has only 4 Gb of vram which might be a problem in some games on the otherhand the 8gb Rx 580 still holds up ok at 1080/60 but its an old card and used prices are inflated atm. 1070 best bet used $250-$350 which probably works out near best price performance given it outperforms 1650 S with a similar price point plus your getting 8 gb vram.

  • I went with an RTX 2060 as a stand-in card but that was not be the best bang for buck. A GTX 1650/1650 Super should be just fine, or even a GTX 1060 6GB if you are okay with going used.

  • 3070 new is actually a better deal than most 2nd hand rip offs…now

  • GTX1660Ti's are decent cards for the $. Bought a used card 4 weeks ago for $100 though I don't think we'll those prices anytime soon.

Have seen a couple sell locally for $300, though in past week have also seen some advertised for $400+.
