    Sorry, but username checks out.

You should start by calling the places where you gave you bank details (plus any other places) immediately.

    • +1

      Lol ye

Yup done. I'm broke anyway so idk what they want with me lol

  • Did you sign up for NBN with TPG by any chance?

Something related to NBN is leaky, I swear.

    • No. Ausbroadband

      • Australia Broadband or Aussie Broadband?

        • Oh god Aussie I think, the one ozbargain praised a lot and so I got it too lel

          • @drumrollplease: Yeah that is Aussie Broadband if you followed the right link. A speedtest will confirm it.

  • Probably start changing your passwords…

    • I didn't give them any passwords. J think they literally just know all my random dozens emails

More info about the scam and Tweet

Note the use of spoofed webnode sites, the same as you have linked. The fake testimonials at the bottom are still there in latin:

    Martin Davis
    Manager / Company
"Voluptas sit aspernatur aut odit aut fugit sed quia consequuntur magni."

Don't panic, but contact your bank immediately to reverse the charges and put a stop on any card/accounts used, then uninstall all the software off your computer, at a minimum.

You can also report it here at Scamwatch.

I get so many calls from NBN/Telstra telling me line will be disconnected.
My opening line is usually along the lines of, "So you know NBN & Telstra are two different companies, which one do you work for?", to which they have no idea and usually hang up on me…. although I do like it when I can 'chat' further with them… :)

    • A little bit later in the script, they'll tell you that they are from the ASIO Cybersecurity squad.

      • +3

If I don't tell them I am from there first!

    • I get those when I'm not with Telstra. Had the Microsoft one and I tell them I have Apple devices.

I tend to get 4-5 calls in a month, then 3-6 months later another 4-5 calls.

Despite these being obvious at times, the tactics do work. My mother recently got caught by an "Amazon" employee that had overcharged her on a purchase and was trying to give her a refund. Fortunately (although a bit late) she got nervous after the phone call and got things sorted with the bank quickly.

There's a guy who posts on youtube where he allows scammers onto his virtual machine and somehow reverses the teamviewer/Anydesk connection so that he is able to copy/delete all of the scammers files. Does anyone know how to reverse a remote session like that?

    • Are you talking about Scammer Revolts?

i believe hes talking about this lad. really nice guy, refunds victims as best he can

      • Regardless of who you are talking about, reversing the connection is difficult and rare. Basically two methods.

        1. Some remote desktop programs are now providing a warning to the person who is being connected to (the victim), so to avoid this some scammers allow you to connect to them first to avoid this and quickly walk you through the process to allow them back into your pc. They will keep a close eye on you while you're connected to their pc and disconnect you from their pc if you don't let them connect to your pc.

        2. Using social engineering you let them take a Remote Access Trojan that is on your Virtual Machine and hope they run it on their pc.

I can help you out OP. To do this I need you to sign into your password manager on your computer and install my remote desktop software. We can proceed from there my trusting friend.

The opposite also happens where you're expecting your Telstra NBN is to be connected and someone calls pretending to be Telstra to scam you. I've had it happen in businesses where there were actual Telstra techs onsite and they took the call. It's happened enough that it has to be an inside job.

Did you install any software during this?

    • Team viewer immediately uninstalled after I hung up

      • +1

Sorry to hear that. I know it sucks but it's best wiping the machine and reinstalling your operating system to ensure they left nothing behind.

If you use Gmail I'd strongly recommend enrolling into https://landing.google.com/advancedprotection/

Its suprisingly usable and its major selling point would be very good protection against social engineering.

If you do notice suspicious transactions on your bank call your bank immediately.

It's always worth asking for your credit report once a year too.

        • :( it says the machine was downloaded from the official TeamViewer app site tho :(? I also ran a virus scan and seems alright :( I've already called the bank and they've restricted my account lol I'm broke too tho legit why they targetting me haha I don't have a credit card but thank you

          • +1

@drumrollplease: They aren't targeting you just trying to scam as many people as posst.

TeamViewer app is probably fine but they may have setup backdoors while controlling your machine or did you only give them view access?

            • @deme: Oh idk what I think it was something in options I'll re-download

Oh (profanity) I gave unattended access. Okay so factory resetting will get rid of them yeah?

              • @drumrollplease: What operating system do you have?

                • @deme: Windows 10

                  • @drumrollplease: It's better than doing nothing. A better option would be to wipe the disc using something like DBAN and reinstall windows 10 from USB.

                    • @deme: hmmm is there any way I can identify if they've left anything on my pc? oh I'll try that out too though thanks

                      • @drumrollplease: Too much effort. Backup any files you need and factory reset.

                        • @Twix: :') will my IP address change? they also have that in addition to viewing something on cmd where I could see my google home devices

                          • +2

@drumrollplease: Your IP address won't change but I wouldn't worry about that.

They probably ran netstat or arp commands just to scare youz no need to worry.

    I love them.
First I say do I need to have the computer on and if the answer is yes (99% of the time it is) then I say hold on while I power it up. I don.t touch the computer.
Then after a few minutes I say my computer is now on.
Then they ask me to go to a web site and I say hang on I need to log in. I wait another few minutes.
They then ask me to log into a web site. I then ask what browser do they want me to use. This usually confuses them. Some hang up at this stage.
They say it does not matter, I then say I will use Mosaic then (I know…..)
I then say I am on the page.
They then ask me to download software. I say I do not download any software from the internet as it's a security risk.
Some hang up not other say it's okay. If they are still there I then ask what the software is needed for.
I the put the phone to the side and wait till they hang up.

nbn6.webnode.com was taken down about 3 hours ago, but can still be viewed using the wayback machine https://web.archive.org/web/20210125122914/https://nbn6.webn…

  • Is this the scam that begins with a robotic voice telling you about how your Telstra service will be shut off?

Mate, you dont even have a service from telstra. If the voice didn't give it away in the first 0.5 seconds then surely that would.

Anyway, change all your passwords, learn and move on.

    • They said something about how Telstra is still the provider of nbn IP or something. Also I've had emails about my internet being down for maintenance so iunno J thought it was related ye
