That's what I called 'Hijack Marketing'.

    • +12

I call this killing each other, lol when Coles did this they were gonna gain woollies customers, now woollies is matching it and no one wins or loses clients, they just cut margins for no gain.

I remember in economics I was told, if u spectate in a stadium, and u stood up for a better view, u'll have a better view only if no one else does. But if everyone stood up, u'll end up with the same view as before:) but now with sore feet

      • +3

Let the giants cut themselves and each other down. More room for the little players means more competition which leads to the customers winning.
For everyone praising either Coles or Woolies, did you know:
        http://hungrybeast.abc.net.au/media/beast-file-woolies-and-c…

        • +5

Actually, you should realise that this would cause less competition from the "little players". If they drive down the prices between themselves too much, the independant shops have no chance to sustain the same low prices as the giants and would end up losing out. Not to mention that it'd take a lot to cut down either Coles or Woolies.

        • +2

Cut down in size, not necessarily in price.

    • How is that any different to a normal price-match guarantee?

  • +3

Only 1 coupon. Seriously. What's the point. They expect people to leave coles and shop at woolworths for a few dollars savings. Um i think i'll stick with coles.

    • +13

No, I think they are making sure people don't leave them for Coles due to the promotion…

    • +5

Works if you're already interested in some items in Woolies' Christmas offers but are tempted by Cole's cashback deal.

Bear in mind that the two weekends leading up to Christmas are the most crucial time for the supermarkets because almost everyone will stock-up for the festivities. They cannot afford to lose their regular clientèle to a rival.

  • -3

Lol This would have to be the most pathetic marketing i have ever seen!
People don't shop @ coles for the fun of it! They shop at coles because they are cheaper and because they like it. Also i would imagine not many people would go to wollies as they wouldn't get their flybuys points and since flybuys is the biggest loyalty program in aus that is basically the majority.
Wollies should have just had their own coupons, cause again they highlighted COLES.

    • +9

You misunderstand who this marketing is aimed at.
As Fungus said, it is all about keeping Woolies customers from changing (when so much money is a stake at this time of year). I had a chat to my local Woolies Manager today, and a few less parking spaces (due to construction) had him spooked - that equates to a lot of lost sales. Less parking means people go elsewhere & may not return.

If you were going to Coles, you would still go to Coles. The voucher simply ensures a large single purchase.
Woolies ads just negate the effect of Coles advertising on Woolies regulars. There is no benefit in giving away money to already loyal Coles customers. Coles wants to attract the large number of customers away from Woolies. So this is a clever, cost effective Woolies strategy.

(There is little benefit to consumers in loyalty programs like FlyBuys. The benefit is for the trader.)

    • +23

Why would anyone be loyal to one chain or the other? A true ozbargainer would stock up on good specials from both stores.

      • +8

As long as there are a range of supermarkets close to you. Coles is many times further away, & I walk to Woolies. So, it has been a long time since I shopped at Coles. But Coles is building in the same complex, so will move my dollars between IGA, Aldi, Coles & Woolies - all under the same roof. I bought what was on special in the 3 supermarkets & fruit shop today - the true OzBargainer way.

      • +4

This makes the most sense. In my area, we have a Coles, Aldi and Woolies under the one roof in one case and a Colonial, Coles & Woolies in another.

We just look for value across 3 stores in either case. Best way of keeping costs low.

    • +6

i don't shop at coles because every 10 seconds i hear down down prices are down coming over the loud speakers.

      • +4

Yeah it's a pretty immature slogan I reckon..

      • Ha, that's funny as I have never noticed it.

  • (from memory) i saw this at a newsagency in the morning, but since i was in a rush i only got the headline which was GET YOUR $15 COLES VOUCHER for The Daily Telegraph (SYD). As i kept going i thought thats bullsh1t or redeem with large purchase.

    note: FROM MEMORY

  • +1

i cant live without V power @ Shell, thats why i always go to coles!

  • This was advertised on TV this evening, bloody cheeky Woolies!!!

  • +4

I go to coles bcos i think their vegetables are fresher. I have noticed the difference when i have ones or twice shopped at woolies. Things like their brocolli and carrots. But i like woolies bakery range. Their cakes are better then coles.

    • yeh but the woolies meat is terrible , i buy everything but meat there because the petrol station is close buy….

    • Thats' funny because I like Coles bakery stuff better. They have nice Vienna bread, Ciabatta, and these yummy frosted lemon cakes that I can't find anywhere else.

    • Thats' funny because I like Coles bakery stuff better. They have nice Vienna bread, Ciabatta, and these yummy frosted lemon cakes that I can't find anywhere else.

  • I can confirm that this is working. Pretty good if you already shop at Woolies.

  • +5

when are the supermarkets going to start matching each others' weekly specials? that'd be good!

  • +12

This reminds me of the Coles $10 chickens "down down" campaign … shortly after they did this, Woolies spends big on advertising, "why pay $10 for a chicken when you can get ours for $9.88!"

Might be a bargain, but it stinks of desperation and more of a "oohh, they're doing it so we should too" stunt - like their Earn and Learn school points stunt this year.

    • +4

LoL, haven't seen that one yet; rather give the $0.12 to coles for the effort:D

    • +2

i had a laugh as well when i saw that. pretty lame

    • +10

I subtly tore those posters down shortly after my manager put them up. Every day I'd get some funny man telling me how hilarious it is that it's a .12c saving (as if I hadn't realised after staring at the poster for 9 hours).
I hope whoever thought of that brilliant idea in marketing got shunted down the food chain a bit.

  • +1

p52 of the West Australian newspaper.

    • Now, how to get that piece of junk cheap (or free)..?

  • I heard it was in the Herald Sun in Melbourne.

  • +'ed it so that regular wollies customers notice.

  • +2

The past 2 yrs Woolies has been the sheep, Coles brings down a product and woolies follows. But the crap thing for woolies is the fact they wouldn't have dropped the price if it wasn't for coles so it shows they don't really want to help out their own shoppers and are just being forced to.
The xmas sales for wesfarmers vs woolworths is gonna be so interesting!!

    • +2

You honestly think Coles are 'helping out their shoppers'?
Their bottom line goes to their shareholders, they're the only people they're helping.

      • Wake up! Doesn't Woolies have shareholders? Or do you think Woolies run their business as a non-profit charity.
Just live with it. They are in their games to get the money from your wallet. Just go to the store that suits you and you think you can get a better deal.

        • +1

I never said that they didn't? I've worked for Woolies for 5 months and It's a nice job yes, but I hate going to work everyday because I know that I'm just feeding the corporate giant. I'm not bias in any way.

You could replace 'Coles' in my comment with any other conglomerate, the products all come from the same factory anyway.

        • You hate feeding the corporate giant but aren't bias in anyway? Ha!

      • Their margin profit should be greater than 10% otherwise they just save their money in Bank, so dun think they are and will be charity

    • Agree, Wollies definitely seem to be the followers. Coles are leading the pack in terms of ideas and Wollies is just sitting back and replicating what comes.

  • +6

Lol nasty marketing, Coles pays for the ads Woolworth saves $$

  • I had a good laugh at all the pro coles propaganda. many thanks for the lulz

  • Great bit of marketing by Woolies. Personally I shop at Coles anyway (parking) but this is a great comeback from Woolies. Just wish they'd do this kind of thing more often.

  • +4

I'm just wondering how long til they each start offering to honour the other's fuel coupons!

    • That will never happen!

      • Why not?

        • Because part of the funding for the petrol discount comes from the profit they make from your supermarket purchases. To honour other's petrol coupons means losing out on profits from your petrol as well as supermarket purchases. Suicidal move, if they do it, it will only be because they want to grab the market share of their petrol business very badly.

        • You're actually quite wrong dude. I don't think you realise just how much money is made on petrol. Despite what petrol station proprietors and fuel companies will try to tell you, there is huge profit in fuel sales; especially in comparison to the trivial discount coupons supermarkets give you.

It would be very smart business to start honouring competitors coupons, the fuel discounts don't entice most people to the supermarket at all, it's the grocery & sale items that do that; but they do keep them coming back to the same fuel bowsers! ;)

        • If you are right, why bother about the petrol discount coupons, isn't it smarter business sense to offer petrol at 4 cents cheaper than the competitors to everybody. Also the independents should simply accept the big supermarkets discount vouchers to get a share of their customers.

        • They effectively already do offer it lower, they have also just found a way to lock some customers in by offering the coupons; it's very smart business if you think about it, because they also get to keep the 4 or 8c/l cream from those who don't have vouchers.

The big players are crushing the independents through sheer buying power when it comes to supply costs & turnover, so the little guys can't really compete in the manner you suggest. Why do you think Coles & Woolies got into fuel sales in the first place, they aren't doing it as a community service, they know there is big money in it.

Finally, regardless of what platitudes about a lack of collusion you may have heard from the so-called investigations into petrol pricing, price fixing is rife in the fuel industry. It's no accident all of the prices are very similar within any given region, or nationwide for that matter.

  • +4

Did my shop at Coles on Fri night. 10% staff discount plus $5 off for survey voucher plus $5 off from the bottom of a previous docket plus 5% by using entertainment gift card. All stacked to near 25% off.

    • +1

      Woah, true OzBargain style.

  • +4

You people do realise that Coles Myer is also a big megacorporation trying to knock out small players and milk you for all your money, just like woolworths. The love shown to Coles is hilarious.

Anyway due to the fact that there was no competition in Lane Cove for many many years, our local Coles is the polar opposite of what is described here. The parking is limited and abysmal, the fruit and veg were terrible quality and they had far fewer discounts. Basically took the locals for a ride because there was nowhere else to go. Getting a woolies in for competition has been a long overdue kick in the butt for them. The moral being, dont take woolies for granted as if they werent around coles would treat you like dirt, and vice versa.

    • That's terrible, lucky it's no longer Coles myer anymore :) since Wes took over, it's gone thru a big make over

      • A big make over? Lol

    • +2

I agree with this completely. Just up the road from me is a huge shopping centre with coles, woolworths, aldi and some medium sized stores like harris farm in it and IGA is just down the road. Each of the stores is impeccable because there is so much competition. The staff are always friendly at all of the stores as well.
In this situation, you can't have loyalty, because they are all essentially on par.

    • Coles Myer? They're now separate businesses and Coles was taken over by Wesfarmers (Bunnings)

  • +7

How the hell has the internet resorted to supermarket fanboyism?

I shop at both, they both have pros and cons.

  • +1

Coles has slumped since Wesfarmers bought them. Terrible stores - now routinely sells stale/ rotten produce.

  • +2

    Meanwhile back to the COUPONS
    LOL.

  • I wonder what coupon will be offered next sat to get people into their stores for xmas eve??

  • +1

I shop in small stores, this giants have upped priced in everything. A loaf of bread $5.

  • This weekend you can get your Christmas Hams for $4.64KG at Coles. Coles will double the difference if you can find ham cheaper at woolworths, IGA or Aldi. Woolworths are giving $5 off the total price per ham this weekend. coles are also taking $15 off your shopping when you spend over $200 so for this exersise we will buy $200 worth of ham.

Shopping at coles Hams are $7.49 therefore a 4kg Ham = $29.96 we ask them to double the difference as Woolworths sells them at $7.49 but gives $5 of the total ham price Therefore the ham is now $19.96 This year we are very hungry so we will take 11 hams this equals $219.56 and then at the checkout with a news papes coupon a further reduction of $15 Thats 11 x 4kg hams for 204.56

If we fill in a customer survey they will give us another $5 Voucher and if we buy 80 Litres of fuel we will save a further $6.40 With this factored in the Hams are now $4.39 KG

But it doesn't stop there spend $2 at coles express get a further 2c of the petrol a further $1.60 reduction and now we have a fuel receipt we can take to IGA and get a further 4c of per letre by spending $30 or more a further saving of $4.80 now the hams work out to be $4.28 per kg

    • +3

Have you done a spreadsheet for this LOL? ;D

    • plus you scores a bonus free coronary from all the hams! my (last) christmas is complete!
