What to Look for When Picking up a Brand New Car?

Hi.

I bought a brand new Mazda CX-5 on 02/01/2021 (Build Date Dec 2020 and Compliance Date Jan 2021) and the dealership said they will deliver the car around 28/01/2021. But the dealership told us last week that the car is now ready to be picked but when I received the tax invoice it says Build Date Dec 2020 and Compliance Date Dec 2020. So clearly the dealership was trying to be fraudulent and they were trying to deliver an old car to us. Anyway I brought this to their attention and they said the wrong compliance date got printed by mistake in the tax invoice (which I don't believe). Anyway, they have told us to wait until Feb 2021 now so that they can deliver the car to us which is Build Date Dec 2020 and Compliance Date Jan 2021.

I simply don't believe the dealership anymore and I just don't want to get cheated again. All I want to know from you guys is now what things I should look for when I will pick up the car in Feb 2021. I just want what was promised to us. I am not looking to complaint about them yet. And I don't know anyway how the complaint will help us.

I don't think I can cancel the entire purchase now otherwise I would have even considered to do this.

Thank you.

  • I'd be more concerned about having bought a CX-5. Having used one since 2014, the build quality has been disappointing. Creaky dashboard, squeaky seats, plastic bits falling off the interior and tailgate, only after a few years of use. Their service departments tend to lie about things too - especially the NB-1 TomTom infotainment system which has been a mess.

working in sales myself, you're the type of customer that makes my job so much harder.

good, the job should be done properly in the first place then :)
hopefully it teaches more attention to detail

My god you are a difficult person. I feel sorry for those people that you come into contact with on a day to day basis

This means nothing, the important thing as far as far as resale value ,always is taken from BUILD date ,not compliance
there are heaps of cars that are built in 2018 and only sold in 2021 that does not make it a 2021 model ,it will always be classed as a 2018 model hence it is worth less .
so your car built in 2020,is worth less than one built in 2021,regardless of month it was made

    As trinity1 said

My sister was looking to get a car back in mid to late 2019, and after a bit of looking around, she had decided on the new VW Polo's. She went to a local dealership, and they showed her a supposed 'new' 2019 one they had just got on the lot. They were pushing for her to get this car by saying it had all the options she would want, without her having to wait for it to be built, and that they would give her a better deal… all the typical sales rep spiel you'd expect. She ended up liking the car and put decided to put a deposit on it after some negotiations. I got to look at the paperwork at a later date when I got to see her, just to double check everything and make sure all is good, when I noticed is that it had a build date of 2018, but compliance date of Jan 2019. I proceeded to contact the sales rep telling them that this is not a 2019 vehicle, which he disputed saying they go off of compliance date. Funny thing is, I searched up the VIN of the vehicle to see if they had a listing online, and they themselves had it listed as 2018 VW Polo, with the registration check also coming back as a 2018 vehicle. The online drive away price was also lower than what it was supposedly worth before negotiations. I told him about this discovery, and also told him that they've been trying to offload it for months.

I ended up blasting this guy in person with the end result of a 2019 build with the options she wanted at a cheaper price. She would of been more than happy with the original car if they were just honest with her from the start. They definitely tried to trick her into getting this car so they can get it off the lot, as well as trying to get a little extra on the top.

If you ever go to buy, sell or trade in a vehicle, always go off of build date. Don't get bamboozled into paying more for a technically year old vehicle, even if it is only 1 month old as they will 100% go off build date.

Next time I think I'll go with her, as she clearly dropped the ball here lol

Who ever was negotiating, probably should never negotiate ever again….

Mazda does wacky things, I wouldn’t let it worry you.

I bought a 2020 CX-5 This year, build date was April 2020, but it’s listed as an MY19 for some reason. Weirdly, it’s 100% a 2020 model (HD all the same features that came out in the MY20… so I got no idea.

At the end of the day, it was built in 2020, so it’s a 2020 model.

Not the case. Build date and MY date aren't the same.

You most likely have the 2019 model, that was just built in 2020….

        awaiting geoffss forum post.. jk

      • Tenth digit of the VIN denotes MY…

        K denotes 2019MY
        L denotes 2020MY

  • I always wonder what I should check for my next purchase pickup. I have

    Kilometers
Some electronic - power seat, seat air ventilation, speakers, etc
    Scratches and panel alignment

Is it unreasonable to ask for a test drive before handing over your hard earn cash?

  • build date make big difference, not compliance date.

The difference will be around 5% difference if you sell your car in the future. you get more for a later build date (year)

All I see now you don't have a car until next month instead of right now. Very sad

  • Thank you everyone.

  • I think the moral of the story is, do not buy car that was build in December.. it is better to wait for one more month and hopefully the one build in January comes out (if you can wait for another month). So when we are reselling the car we can say it was built on 2021 instead of built on 2020, even though it is only one month difference. When you put an ad in carsales.com.au, people only use the year as the filter (not including the month).

  • My dad had this happen try selling jan 2018 Mitsubishi Triton in dec 2019 i told go chat to them they end up nocking 3000 off the price of the car.
