I'm pretty sure the Brioche Gourmet Burger Buns are brought in from France Frozen or refridgerated, and then the Woolies staff have to thaw them out before putting them on the shelf. Reason being is that when I last bought them the packet was cold and the buns were still a little firm (you couldn't squish them all the way in).

IMO the Aldi Brioche burger buns are way better and just seem 'fresher'

I'm pretty sure the Brioche Gourmet Burger Buns are brought in from France Frozen or refridgerated, and then the Woolies staff have to thaw them out before putting them on the shelf.

They are imported and sent to the store frozen.

But if you think that makes them less fresh than the Aldi ones it is probably because you know the Woolworths ones are frozen.

IMO the Aldi Brioche burger buns are way better and just seem 'fresher'

The Aldi Brioche burger buns are also frozen and the white best before sticker is added by the store when they remove them to defrost before putting them out for sale.

      • +2

The main difference is Aldi's don't need to be half price to be &$2.50.

        • I think you replied to the wrong person. I was not talking about the price of them.

          • +2

@spaceflight: Not really. You were explaining how similar they are, which is great, I was just pointing out how dissimilar they are in price, thats all.

            • +5

@nepalesesquirrel: But I never said that they were similar.
The only thing I said is that they are both frozen.

That's a long way from similar.
Unless the beer battered chips in my freezer are also similar to a brioche bun.

    • +1

      Both would be sent frozen.
My Woolies actually stocks 2 brands of brioche buns. These are better than the Toscano ones.

If anyone is in Perth, highly recommend the Il Granino stuff. Can get it from Veeo's, select IGA's, Spudshed (although don't seem as fresh as other places), etc but bigger buns made by a local bakery. They do brioche but their potato buns are the go!

    • +1

If the package says not suitable for freezing, it means they defrost it in store

    • +1

I was getting pita bread from coles the other day and had the same experience.

Also, I cant stand Brioche buns, they are gross.

      • +1

Also, I cant stand Brioche buns, they are gross

Me too. Sweet sugary fluffy yellow bread, yuck. Turkish or Sourdough from a baker is the only way to go :)

    • +1

As someone who used to work at woolies you’re correct. Most of the bakery items not made in store come in frozen and are stored in freezer out the back. They are then defrosted when placed on the shelf

    • +1

I prefer buns to be a bit firm.

Any comments on the Hinata rice? How does it compare to the Koshikihari variety?

I was 100% Sunrice Australian grown sushi rice until this shortage now relegated to Vietnamese Sushi rice.

    • Can't fault Hinata rice. Quality short grain rice.

    • +1

I just use their medium calrose, pretty close to short grain and around half the price. Online advise is that anything labelled as "sushi rice" or similar has a pretty big markup.

      • medium calrose is $24/10kg, i remember the discounted price is about $15 ~ $17.

      • I use medium rice to make sushi. Quite happy with the result. Have used sushi rice in the past not much difference.

  • +3

One can never say no to a golden gaytime.

    • It's hard to have a gaytime on your own

      • Defo gonna order some gay time

Aldi's version is cheaper BUT Just different

      • +1

        depends how flexible you are

  • +1

Finally a sale on rice! Thanks OP.

    • rice is so expense these days. haven't seen any discount on australia sunrise short grain for a long time

  • always amuzes me that supermarkets think they have departments.
They have isles, I'll give them that.
They have the sugar isle, and the junk isle, and the frozen isle, the fridge, the smelly isle…
