When Can We Travel Overseas Again?

So, I have been really bored lately - my boss also told me I need to take annual leave since I havent been taking a single day off since mid 2019 (not that we can go anywhere).

So, my question is when do you guys think we can travel overseas again (im thinking of japan).

  • If you are a SPORTS STAR on tour like the Tennis players in Melbourne then anytime.

Given the current COVID19 vaccinations DO NOT PREVENT infection nor transmission the no jab no deal policy will come into question.

So expect COVID19 restrictions and preventative measures to continue into the foreseeable future.

    Meanwhile plan to travel locally.

    • Tennis players are whinging and moaning like mad about being held in nice hotels for two week. I'm glad they're not getting any special treatment. Being rich or well known shouldn't make you exempt from catching coronavirus.

  • I have 3 weeks long service leave in November/December and hoping to go to Japan as a family holiday…

  • Considering it's going to take a long time for multiple-dose vaccines to roll out, I'm guessing mid/late 2022.

I'll just leave this here: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2247086-the-coronavirus…

We're a bit obsessed about the death rate for COVID, as if the outcome is binary: You live, or you die, no in between. But there is another emerging problem. Long term lung and other organ damage from the virus.

    Your holiday can wait.

  • It wont be the whole world at once.

If tcovid outbreaks slow down/stop happening in Australia, we will probably see NZ as a travel option in July (without quarantine).

Next up would probably be 1st world Asian countries (Japan, Singapore) where they are rolling out the vaccine and some small, close pacific islands (Fiji, New Caledonia, etc), where because of their isolation they have no covid cases, and they want to open up as the desperately need tourism. Hopefully that happens by the end of the year.

Europe will take a while, as you need connecting flights and their borders (land vs water) make it difficult to control the virus. They have started rolling out vaccines earlier, so it will depend on how that goes.

Larger SE Asian countries were hit hard, and have been rolling out vaccines early because of it (Chinese vaccine), but because we cant trust their reporting numbers, its difficult to say when we open to them.

The gov & tourism industries have already been creating systems for vaccine and passport linking, so it may be a matter of time before a push to allow the vaccinated to travel happens.

God knows when the USA will open up to us.

    • New Caledonia has had 44 cases, so far. Fiji has had 55 cases, so far.
The numbers are not big, but you need to factor in the health facilities in those countries (and those probably have the best in the SW Pacific), and how it impacts on the health treatment for others.
Even if they had zero cases, they would have achieved that through a total shutdown of their borders. Why would they put that at risk to have some infected tourists visit?

Eventually countries will have to open their borders, as covid is going to be around for 20+ years. When they do open, they will want to open to countries with low/zero cases of covid (AU and NZ being among those). Seeing as tourism is a major part of their economies it makes sense that when they do open, tourists will return.

When Can We Travel Overseas Again?

How much are you willing to give for the illusion of freedom? Everything is required but slow enough as not to offend you. In the end you will beg for it and be thankful if you have not first freed yourself from the limitations of its deceit.

when travel is possible there will be fewer planes and pilots,
demand will be high, supply tight. prices will be sky high (pun!) you may not be able to afford them,

will the travel credit you have cover the flight?
will the vaccine provide 12 months of protection, or will booster shots be required more frequently?

international travel like 2019, is a loooong way off. 5 years, more??

  • NZ travel bubble is still on around april 2021 depending on conditions (cases)

Still given the states have made it not even safe to travel interstate, there is still a risk of needed to quarantine there/ on the way back.

We def could open to places like singapore/taiwan/vietnam/some island nations like vanautu as they are low risk, but given some states are going for extreme suppression the bubbles might burst mid flight for people.

    • Taiwan may not be so 'low risk'; domestic case numbers are rising and they are cancelling events.
Singapore has some cases (4 new yesterday), but is vaccinating so that may reduce the risk.
Vietnam has some cases (3/day avg recently) and is vaccinating.

Until we are vaccinating, all of those countries may not want to see us visit.

Singapore has had a total of 29 deaths with 58k confirmed cases. The patients are mostly young and healthy foreign workers. Elderlies know to stay at home and they are strict with retirement homes.

Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas is cruising ex Singapore for the past 2mths successfully with no covid cases. They have strict covid measures for staff and operating at 1/2 capacity. Cruise are short and cruise to no where.

Royal Caribbean is coming back to Australia in october 2021. Quantum of the Seas mega ship will be coming to Brisbane.

I hope our gov can learn from Singapore and allow cruises to operate under strict covid protocols. There are no cases in Qld and a negative covid test is required to cruise. Ship goes no where. It would still be a great holiday especially for families with kids.

I booked a cruise for December. It was too cheap not to book. Same quote /yrs ago was almost triple. Paid 10% deposit with remainder due late in the year. Will assess the situation then.

RC are pretty good. My friend obtained full refund and a cruise credit towards their next cruise. I booked with RC as I'm fine with receiving refund or cruise credit since cruising is our next holiday.

I do not envisage international travel until 2022. This year is a write off. We have almost run out if places to visit in Qld. Did it all last year. But still super grateful to be in Qld out of all states. Travel is not cheap. Qlder's have no where to go to travelling within own state. Even with the vaccine, 60% of the population needs to be vaccinated for herd immunity. UK have bungled up Pfeizzer vaccine with unavailability/delay of the booster. Without the booster, it cancels the effectiveness of the vaccine. The Astra Zeneca is easier to store and distribute but has a 60% efficacy. Will 60% suffice for intl travel. Some countries may not let you in!

The saddest part is that the poor countries that desperately need vaccine right now are on the waitlist meanwhile hundreds dying every day. The greedy pharma's are prioritising the countries that paid a premium. Some countries have ordered and received 10x their population. This pandemic has revealed the evils of human nature. Vaccines should be in charge by and distributed via WHO.

Australia has zero transmission. We don't need to vaccinate everyone. I would be happy to give up my vaccine to someone on the front line in Sth Africa. Even if I get covid, I'm unlikely to die from it.

Norfolk Island is very popular atm!

Travel bubble with NZ this coming winter would be great for snow sports enthusiasts.

        • Totally agree with you.

We can not continue like this and I do not give a toss that we have been saturated with the notion of that this is the 'new new' and that we should accept whatever the government wants.

I accept that we and life is continually changing (think 'wabi sabi' concepts) but to live in perpetual fear (where some can consider this False Evidence Appearing Real) to the point where we can not think creatively or innovate ways forward, to be the better us, then we are literally dying.

Yeah england up to 4000 deaths a day and we still take the refugees even though they destroyed their own country.

Clearly OZ has a death wish since our loony pollies think the health managers from england having destroyed the NHS should all be welcomed here on massive salaries to similarly destroy the australian public health system and increase the demand for private care…. the american way..

  • I am evaluating to demand for a refund for an international ticket I had for my family OR to keep it with the airline until the skys are open. Argument for refund is that I dont know when I can go , but on the other hand the tickets I have is a bargain one and airline has promised to do one change of date free of charge. I expect a lot of people to book and prices may be significantly higher than what I paid !
