    I thing you just need a silver account and access to the usual gold stuff will be available. Nothing to activate AFAIK.

  And either way does it get you access to the foxtel stuff?

    you can have a free account, they are are called silver membership. There are only two types. paid = gold, free=silver

    you wont get access to foxtel as that is a paid service on top of having gold membership. Gold only gives you access to xbox live in which online playing is free but other services such as movie downloads and foxtel are additional paid services.
