  • Difference in price? Yeah, bargain? Not really.

    • ^This.
If HD Traffic was free, and NOT an additional sub, I'd probably jump on this.
But as it is, you're just paying for the name.

  • thanks for reminding us that Metroview ($15) is a bargain in comparison to TomTom.

    • This is still a bargain, but I have to agree that Metroview is much better (and a better price)

      • agreed - been using metroview and havent looked back

      • +1

    • and it works pretty well.

    • Guys, does Metroview have TTS?

      • If you tell us what TTS is, then maybe we could answer. :-)

        • Text-To-Speech

  • Good But cant buy for this price. Since Whereis app is free with voice for the moment.

This was as low as $49.95 during the year.

  • I prefer Sygic (I have both) its not as laggy.
you can google search addresses, has WIKIPEDIA points of interest.
Distance to the nearest petrol station.
more upto date maps and only $29

    • agreed is much faster not as laggy.. Bought for $30 but worthit

    • TomTom has Google search.

  • Alot of people jailbreak their phones for tom tom (myself included) so this is a good deal. Are there any itunes card deals going around?

I would have probably got it a few months back but I am waiting on the allphones deal. Would be pointless if I bought it and my new phone came a week later.

  • Definitely a bargain. I bought it for $99 when it first came out. It's been incredibly useful in the time I've had it. It's great getting map updates on the fly, and the ability to submit corrections is awesome!

      i belive you mean
      P I R A C Y…

      jailbreak /= piracy
      piracy = piracy

*this post neither condones nor condemns copying of ios applications, merely that jailbreaking an iphone is not the same as pirating ios applications

  • Is Metroview better or just cheaper?

    • atleast as good imo, does everything I need incl. Google search intergrated

    • cheaper than piracy?

    • I agree… metroview is just as good, lots cheaper and an Aussie company.
Tom tom is a name. And that's not worth another $50, IMO

  • Priced reduction is nice, but still horribly overpriced. If you have an iPhone there are better alternatives and if you have a real need for in car GPS, better to buy a dedicated unit.

  • Metroview is cheaper, I wouldn't say it's better. I've been using Metroview since I got my 4S :)
I might buy this at this price though. If I grab a couple of 2 x $20 iTunes gift cards for $30 at Coles Express TomTom is effectively costing me under $50.

  • METROVIEW is the best…cheaper and reliable. I don't even have to look at the monitor, the voice guidance take me exactly where I need to go.

  • This is likely a very stupid question, but in areas of 'roaming' or no reception, will the app still work? Or is it run via another network?

    • +1

      It uses a GPS receiver.

    • It uses your GPS chip. This chip is different to the cellular chip, where it handles phone/3G etc.

    • It will work without GSM (cellphone) reception. But it will not work without GPS/GLONASS reception - in tunnels, inside buildings.

    • +2

I have this app. It will work in most areas where there is no mobile reception or if you have 3G/Data off, but as iPhone uses aGPS there will be times it won't be able to lock onto enough GPS satellites if you don't have mobile phone reception. aGPS uses information from the telco towers to get a faster and more accurate GPS lock.

All map data is stored on phone so at least there are no excess usage charges in that respect.

      • Thanks! Very helpful :)

  • Evenbetter deal a melways for $9.99 @ kmart

    • +2

LOL. But the voice you'll need to buy that will tell you off at any opportunity (read: WIFE) is making that deal not worthwhile.

      • Aaah - the SCU (Spousal Control Unit)!

  • better price, but hardly a bargain.

for now i'll stick to googlemaps :(

    • Google maps (and I think whereis too) do everything by streaming the map data to your phone. This means that if you don't have 3G coverage, you ain't got anything on the screen. Furthermore, for every minute you are GPS'ing, you are also using Data too.

TomTom, Metroview, etc have all the map data ON your phone (you download it by WiFi each time there is an update). So, as you are using the GPS it's basically free. I say "basically free" because there is a tiny bit of data required for aGPS, which checks Cell Towers and WiFi Hotspots to get extra positioning data.

By the way - after using Metroview aGPS on the iPhone and the equivalent Metroview program (Navig8r) on a stand-alone GPS, I actually prefer the iPhone one. It's heaps faster, works better in tunnels and the city. And the interface works better too, due to teh more responsive touchscreen.

Only hassle with any phone-based GPS is that to get a windwscreen mount, you need to remove the case (bumper in my phone). So, I reverted to one of those super-sticky pads that sits on the dashboard and the phone sticks to it. The other disadvantage of the phone is that the volume is lower, and iPhone 4's tend to overheat so sitting on the dashboard in summer will usually see the phone shut itself down!

      • Well said bro. Whereis streams data on the fly. My 15 mins trip from Burwood to City used up 5 mb of data. 20mb per hour.

Especially agree with you re windscreen mount! I hate them, often falls down and hitting my beloved phone! Hate it so now I use a silicon based cover so it will grip between the dashboard and windscreen… But nonetheless, the heat issue is unstoppable during summer and it is not healthy!

So now, i just hold it with one hand while driving.

    • Google Maps doesn't do spoken Turn By Turn navigation on the iPhone so it's usefulness is pretty limited unless you know the way fairly well. Ideally your navigation application should require you to look away from the road constantly.

  • I've just started using navfree - which of course is free - and I'm finding it brilliant. Is it worth paying more for this, or metroview?

  • When will Google Maps w. Navigation available for IOS?

  • Hi Guys,
If I buy/download one version of metroview, when I change my phone, can I install it in another phone and not have to pay for it again? Or is it one download per phone?
