From the website:

Phoenix Point puts players in the midst of a desperate fight to take back the Earth from a mutating, alien menace. Featuring turn-based tactical combat on procedurally generated maps, and resource management on a global scale, Phoenix Point offers endless replayability and a brutal challenge.
Following a global environmental disaster, the Pandoravirus appeared and began reshaping creatures, including humans, into hideous mutants. Unable to stop the progress of the virus, much of human civilization was wiped out — only small enclaves remain, separated by their principles and the vast landscape. The Phoenix Project, an ancient failsafe against global catastrophe is the only hope to unite mankind and take back the planet.
Lead the Phoenix Project from its base at Phoenix Point. Research and develop new technologies and techniques, plan operations, build alliances to unite the planet— or simply destroy your rivals. It's up to you to save the planet and rebuild civilization, but there may be much more to the alien threat than meets the eye.

  • Mutating Alien Menace: Face down an ever-changing alien threat that adapts to your tactics and offers no respite even as your team becomes more powerful and technologically advanced.
  • Uncover the Secrets of the Pandoravirus: Phoenix Point features a complex narrative, with multiple endings that the player can only uncover via multiple playthroughs. Discover a secret history, as you learn about the origins of the mutants, the Pandoravirus, and Phoenix Point itself through exploration, diplomacy, and research.
  • Manage Diplomatic Relations: The Phoenix Project is not the only organization trying to reclaim the Earth. The militaristic New Jericho, the mystical Disciples of Anu, and the technophiles of Synedrion all offer unique rewards for co-operation and threats for opposition. It is up to you to decide how, or even if, to deal with them.
  • Take Aim on the Battlefield: In addition to equipping and commanding units, Phoenix Point lets you take direct control of your soldier's shots in combat, with a unique free-aiming system. Target enemy weakspots, weapons, or valuables, or just go for center mass.
  • Next-Gen Tech with Classic Pedigree: Phoenix Point was designed by Julian Gollop, the creator of the X-COM series in the 1990s. Keeping the core ethos of X-COM while updating the visuals, technology, and systems to modern standards has made Phoenix Point best-in-class.

  • Tons of Content:
3 DLC Packs (Blood & Titanium DLC, Legacy of the Ancients DLC, and the Living Weapons Pack), all digital goodies, and a slew of updates, upgrades, and new content suggested by our community.

  • Mutating Alien Menace:
Face down an ever-changing threat that adapts to your tactics as you play.

  • From memory this only got passable reviews. Worth if if I'm after an XCOM-like?

    • +2

My first impressions of Phoenix Point are a year old, but at the time the mechanics were pretty well thought out but poorly explained, clunky could have used further optimisation. They did promise to revisit some issues but I'm not sure how well it was done. I did like the story and lore associated with the game, and that you could interact with the factions and piss them off by doing certain missions. Reviews of the year one edition from original backers are actually pretty positive for the year one edition though!!

With that said, 2020 was actually a pretty good year for isometric tactical squad games, if you're looking for alternative

      • Gears Tactics is very well polished with some pretty entertaining gameplay elements. The side missions can be a bit repetitive and there are very few minigames/mechanics like the wordmap in XCOM, but it's still well worth playing and the voice acting, cinematics and animations are exactly what you'd expect from a AAA franchise.

        • XCOM: Chimaera Squad is basically a standalone XCOM 2 expansion pack. It retains most of the core combat elements and adds in some new ones specific to SWAT style breach-and-clear mechanics. It also tries to personalise your squad by making them named characters… but I find it somewhat hit and miss. The overall story does tease what will come next in XCOM 3.

        • Wasteland 3 came out this year. It can be buggy but anecdotally I was fine. It's more like an RPG adventure with squad tactics, and has fairly rich story and background. The earlier entry, Wasteland 2: Director's Edition is cheap and great and could be a good introduction as to whether you want to play Wasteland 3.

        • A bit older but often overlooked is Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus. It's fairly simplistic and heavily steeped in 40K lore but does a great job in creating nailbiting moments and repeat playthroughs through very randomised mission rewards and drops. The sound design is also ridiculously good.

Wasteland 3 was amazing and one of my GOTY's IMO.

My two cents on Phoenix Point is that its… okay. Nothing mind blowing. Storyline needs a lot of polish and you don't feel a connection to your characters like you do with the XCOM Firaxis games.

  • Dunno if it's just me, but I didn't like Wasteland 3, or Gears Tactics. Chimera Squad I did enjoy. Phoneix Point I was most looking forward to and tried my hardest to like but just didn't enjoy it.

I am actually considering going back to Xcom 2 War of the Chosen and giving it another run through because it's that good, over any of those.
