ARCTIC MX-4 2019 Edition - 4g Thermal Compound Paste - Carbon Based High Performance - Heatsink Paste - Thermal Compound CPU Coolers

I've been monitoring this one an bought one at this price as I need to replace my CPU in a couple of weeks. I saw this as a very good option for the price. Other products (AS5, Noctua etc) are available at higher prices but this is considered very good value on reviews I've read.

  • Composed of carbon micro-particles which lead to an extremely high thermal conductivity. It s that heat generated from the CPU or GPU is dissipated efficiently
  • Thermal compound: The MX-4 Edition 2019 formula has exceptional heat dissipation from the components and supports the stability needed to push your system to its limit
  • Safe application: The MX-4 Edition 2019 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
  • High durability: in contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, The MX-4 Edition 2019 doesn't compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last At least for 8 years

They also have thermal grizzly on sale

Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal Grease Paste - 1.0 Gram https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B011F7W3LU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_f…

    I bought both.

    ;)

      $16 for 1g of TG seems expensive:/

      • +1

$45 for 11.1g. potentially cheaper from 3rd parties.

      • Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut scored as the best paste in most test results I've seen. Mx-4 scores above average but I haven't seen it in the top 5. $16 is cheaper than it's been on Amazon recently, eBay shipped from china is even cheaper ~$8 but I ordered it at $16 yesterday to get my re-paste done during the holidays.

        • No doubt it’s good or even the best. But a 5 gram tube is around $45. 1 gram is one application right?

  • +1

    Aren't the Kryonaut better?

    • Sure, it's also double the cost. For most purposes this is just fine. Personally I don't have a use for Kryonaut - it pumps out too easily for GPUs and laptops so I use something thicker (Kingpin KPx) or Conductonaut if appropriate. Anything else isn't as sensitive and is usually just fine with MX4.

I'm personally a fan of the Kingpin KPx for an all-round high performance paste. It's about the same cost as Kryonaut, just more versatile IMO.

  • I've got a NH-D15 for my next build. Is it worth buying this thermal paste (or Thermal Grizzly) over the included noctua paste?

    • +4

If the included paste is the NT-H1 then it'll perform the same as this MX-4 (differences would be in the 0.5 degree range, or basically margin of error). If it's the NT-H2 then that should perform better than the MX-4.

There would be a 1-2 degrees difference between the NT-H1 and the Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut though, whether that's worth the price premium is up to you.

      (Ambient being 25 degrees)

      • +2

One thing to consider is the longevity of thermal paste. The noctua stuff is great but is only rated to last 3 years before needing a reapplication whereas MX-4 is rated for 8 years.

    • It might be worth it just in case you run out. But you won't see much of a difference in performance.

Thermal grizzly is wayy too expensive for an extra 1-3c imo. They're something like 8-10x the price of a 10g tub of h1. They also degrade faster.

Personally, I usually just stick to mx-4 or noctua h1, depending on which one is cheaper

Save your money for Cooler Master MasterGel Maker (Nano), I've been using it for 2 years very stable paste and easy to apply.

Single tube has given me good results across 4 PCs and 3 Laptops and still some left.

    • I second that

  • +3

If you can't be arsed to get a few percent of a degree centigrade more cooling for double or even triple the cost. This stuff works a treat.

Used for my last build, no complaints.

  • I built my whole new build and forgot to put this on still sitting in the box. Really much of a difference to the ones that come on the stock 5600x?

    • Sounds like you are using the stock cooler? I believe these expensive gels works the best with water cooling or big tower air coolers

      • Yes just the wrath one that came with it. Coolio I'll give it to a mate to use for their future builds. Was lucky enough to get a 3080 and everything I wanted.

  • Thoughts on getting some of this over the compound pre-applied on the likes of the AMD Wraith Stealth or Prism CPU cooler? Worth the extra effort? And if worth it do you have to clean the pre-applied stuff off the cooler to use this?

    • +2

You do NOT use both. One or the other only.

    • +1

Not worth it in a standard setup, benefit will be marginal at best. If you are over clocking worth it but then u are unlikely to be using a stock cooler. And yes you need to clean off the old first

    • +4

Be careful if your pulling off the stock cooler, lots of people have ripped out their cpus out of the sockets and bent pins with the stock paste. Warm up the cpu first and twist it off to break the air seal.

      • Yeah I read about this and was one of the reasons people in other places were suggesting to replace the provided compound before installing the cooler.

  • +1

Not sure if I should buy this when I have some leftover paste from my previous build.

It's been about 4 years since I last used it and I did hear they expire. But don't know exactly how much it effects performance and if it's still just good enough to use.

  • Best / most well known thermal paste at this price point. I doubt most people would need anything better unless there is a specific need.

  • I have been using the NT-H1 for yonks, but I bought the MX-4 last year, both are tops; them came NT-H2, all 3 are fine now :p

  • Unfortunately expired, had to buy from ebay using a $5 coupon.
