Help Me choose a New Car 25K Budget

Guys need some help in choosing a car.
I have shortlisted Suzuki Vitara , Mitsubishi ASX, Hyundai Elantra,Honda civic.
I am just not able to decide on the car.
I currently have a Suzuki swift and BMW 320 and want to replace the swift with any of the above.
It doesn't matter if it is a sub or sedan. What really matters to me the reliability and engineering/technology ofcorse within that budget.
What would be your best pick.
I haven't test driven any of them due to time constraints.
Wondering what are your thoughts.
More than happy to reach out to any of your friends or references . Helps me and help their individual targets aswell.
Baulkham Hills Sydney. Thanks

This. Particularly a few years old as you can save 1/3 by picking one up 2 or 3 years old. I know OP wants new but for others considering something similar I'd go the used Cerato.

  • +24

Can I just add my 5 cents worth

The author sounds like a (profanity)

I will probably be put in the naught corner for this comment

But my democratic free will and the urge to express myself override this concern

    • +1

Tbh thinking the same thing lol

  • So, what is the summary? It seems everyone is saying Kia Elantra S for around $22K.

    • How much does Camry, Civic, Mazda 3 cost (automatic)
    • Is Kia like Camry in sense it will last long time and not that much on maintenance?
  • Everyone on here says Kia.
Looks out the window, not everyone drives a Kia.
    mmmmm?

  • +1

I have only driven Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra

Among the two I would go with Hyundai Elantra. And the reason I choose Elantra on my second car purchase was for
    1. Fuel Efficiency compared to similar sedan
    2. Sleek exterior design (I heard they hire the best in the field for design)
    3. Great leg room for both front and rear seat. Both my and my spouse are quite tall (I am 180 cm). I think Elantra have more leg space compared to even some of the SUV.
    4. Great value (Japanese or European car is more expensive for similar spec)

    The downside
    - If you like to drive fast, this might not be the car for you. When driving to central coast on "climbing" part of the highway, I found that I almost floored the accelerator pedal to get it up to 120km/h.
    - (I heard but never experienced this - never need to replace major parts) Parts might be harder to get (If you happen need to replace major parts) compared to Japanese made cars. Thus longer wait time at service station when major fixes are required.

  • Do yourself a favour. Stick with either Honda or Toyota. Get an ex demo and if you like to travel with the family then try Rav 4 or Honda CRV. Don’t get a Mitsubishi or other. Toyota or Honda will last longer and have better resale value.

    • -3

Fab. I am stuck between Civic and Vitara. I know 2 different segment. Both are priced around the same. Both have a wait time. A new Civic is expected anytime though. This competes with i30 sedan which is also due anytime.

      • +3

Don't get the povo spec Vitara with the 1.6.

        • +1

Why not. It’ll be cheaper, will still be a new car and have associated cred with the fam and it’s only going to be driven 2km/day.

          • +1

@Euphemistic: Coz he may as well keep the Swift for all the power that car has…

            • +5

@spackbace: I’ve resigned myself to the OP buying a new car ‘at any cost’. Now he can make his own mistakes.

              • +1

@Euphemistic: Sometimes, you have to let people make their own mistakes in life. Hopefully he'll learn to get over his complex one day

  • +1

I'd always recommend a Mazda 6. They're one of the best cars you can get for that price. Try to snag a 2016-2018 GT or Atenza Model, and I doubt you'd be disappointed.

    • -4

      mazda 6 is splendid.
There is no chance for a used

      • I got a 2014 GT model for about 23k a couple years ago. Only had 50,000kms on it. You could probably get similar for under 20k now. Admittedly you might have to go back to a 2015 model instead of the 16/18 I initially suggested. But the 2015 model has improvements over 2014, such as a new, better entertainment system.

  • +4

Let us make it easy for you.

Go buy new an BMW but I doubt you can't afford it

    • Doesn't serve my intention at the moment.
Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts.

  • I purchased the Vitara Turbo early in 2020. More close to $30,000 though.
Has all the bells and whistles. Only silly thing is it has a digital readout of every thing you could come up with but not the speed you're doing. Have to look at the old fashioned clock face for that. It's bizarre.

    • Yeah, it easily touchs 30. Also Suzuki does not offer any discount whatsoever.
Wonder how do they meet their sales target if they can't be flexible in doin business. Same with Honda.

    • It is almost a year now since you have owned it . What are your thoughts on the Vitara Driving experience. The noise ?

      • I also purchased a Vitara about a year ago (late 2019). After having driven it for a year I would definitely recommend it. I got the turbo for 28.5k, they were initially asking for 30k. Had to keep calling dealerships and bargaining but they came down eventually. For the price I think the car is a good buy, drive noise OK but not fantastic, I don't think any cars in this price bracket have a really 'premium' drive experience. You get Android Auto / Apple CarPlay for free which is great, because one thing that isn't so good is the inbuilt GPS/car computer, its very basic.

        • -1

Thanks for the review montassis .
This is exactly the kind of feedback i was after.
I test drove Vitara twice. Feels sturdy. The tech and the finish is no where Close to Civic.i personally would prefer the civic. They both are priced in the same bracket.Wife finds the Vitara easy to reverse and parking is a breeze. Especially at school zones .

          • @WPExpress: "The Vitara goes around corners well enough but is let down by its steering. It’s very light when you begin to turn the wheel, and there’s little sense of connection to the front wheels." Doesn't sound fun for carving curves.

            https://www.whatcar.com/suzuki/vitara/4x4/review/n76/on-the-…

            • @Fobsessive: Well said. I am surprised not Many have mentioned this super important factor.
I felt the same about the steering. I thought maybe it a one off car or one off drive or maybe it is just me.
I felt the same with many cars infact.
Subaru and Peugeot cars are classic example of steering wheel being light or engine being too heavy for the steering..
Civic is the only one that seems to have the equilibrium.
              Maybe it is just me.
Detail oriented analysis. Good one. Thanks

              • @WPExpress: Yeah, steering feel often gets overlooked. A (sporty) equilibrium would be nice. Thanks for appreciating my input.

PS I guess the new Civic won't reach Aus until late 2021, given Honda Aus's slow record. If picking Civic, you have hatch vs sedan options, and also the new Civic won't have a sedan option.

            • +3

@Fobsessive: The car is driving 2kms per day

It's not exactly getting taken through a mountain pass 😂

  • Does it have to be a brand new car? Can you go for a second hand? Corolla sedan is good, right? If not, go for Mazda? maybe Mazda 3?

    • +2

You probably haven’t read the thread have you?

Plenty of suggestions for used to save $ but OP is hell bent on buying new at the cost of getting a better vehicle for the same $

    • Thanks mate.will leave the Mazda and the Toyota.
I need to decide between Honda civic or vitara.
Or wait for the new i30 sedan or new civic.

  • +3

The swift seems to fit your personality well OP, keep it.

    • +9

Really? I thought the swift was for people who recognise no-fuss, budget priced, decent quality motoring. Not drivers that need to impress their peers with a new car.

      • +1

Would you not be impressed with a mate owning a swift?
Like correct me if im wrong here..

        • +3

I don't think a swift is "impressive". Practical, yes…but nobody's going to take a second look.

If I were to choose a car for OP it'd probably be a poverty spec A class Merc, with an AMG pack, that seems to suit his personality well. Unfortunately even that's out of his budget

        • I would not be impressed with it taking 11 seconds for 0-100

        • +2

Impressed isn’t the right word. I would respect someone who made he choice of a swift.

  • -3

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. Appreciate the efforts and your contribution . I will be closing this thread now. Cheers

    • +3

      Rest easy legend.

  • +5

Please for the love of your wallet, don't buy a new vehicle for $25k to drive 2km, when you already have one that does that job. That would be the stupidest financial decision you'd ever made.

    • +8

That would be the stupidest financial decision you'd ever made.

      I dunno, dude drives a 3 series BMW…

    • -7

I am not after financial advice .
Millions of new cars are bought all over the world mate and you are calling all the buyers stupid.which is certainly very silly.
Having said that we all have our individual preferences and I suppose we should just respect each others space.

Appreciate your point of view. But no Thanks jrowls. Your feedback is irrelevant like many posted in this thread which goes to the bin. Good luck .

      • +5

Millions of new cars are bought all over the world mate and you are calling all the buyers stupid.which is certainly very silly.

It’s just your reasoning, logic and attitude. People that buy a new car for such short travel distances and do so to impress friends and family while owning a relatively new, perfectly adequate vehicle who ask for advice on a money saving forum might be the silly ones.

Pork buy new cars for a range of reasons. Most due to change in circumstances and having little knowledge of vehicles and just want a warranty and no hassles.

Keep in mind, once your attitude became known this thread thrives because of trolling and you kept taking the bait. Look at the number of negative votes on your posts.

        • -4

Another irrelevant piece which goes to the bin.

      • +7

Err, you've posted on a bargain website asking about what appears to be a discretionary purchase that makes no financial sense and is in every respects, the opposite of a bargain. You've basically gone into a steak restaurant and asked for a vegan dish. I know that much of the feedback here has not been welcomed by you, but what do you expect?

I mirror the other commenter somewhere in this megathread who said that you should have chosen a car forum instead of here.

  • +2

Can I ask people don't waste any more time with the OP and stop commenting further on this post? The OP's attitude is ridiculous. He needs to grow up

    • +2

But it’s summer holidays and raining and cold. Not much better to do.

    • +1

But muuuuum, it's fun and we're borrrrrred

  • +8

Safe to say from this toxic and arrogant attitude from the OP, he and his topic don't contribute anything to OZBARGAIN. A bargain hunting site. This thread really needs to be locked and shelved/remembered as one of the most distasteful threads out there.

Good piece to link in other threads in the future, especially in threads with people who live in sort-of affluent suburbs who are willing to dispose one of their 2 perfectly functional cars in order to sink $25k on a car to drive 2km/day, and arrogantly demands suggestions on a BRAND NEW CAR (purely for the prestige of having a new car to impress his family/friends who
may have promised them the car will be new) that is very reliable (as reliable as an MG car) but for the life of him doesn't know what he actually wants and yet when people poke holes on the logic of his purchase, he rudely fires back saying he knows what he wants and dismisses it as irrelevant/dodgy financial advice and troll posting.

Trash attitude all round from the OP.

    • -8

This is so not true mate.
      Read my initial question.
It is a very simple straightforward question.
All I wanted was the feedback on the 4 shortlisted. Test drives were Work in progress and at no point I have asked or seeked a financial advice ( I have qualified dedicated competent people who can look after my financials , accounting and taxes ) . At no point I have seeked for any alternative ( like an advice on a used car or renting a car or …)
At no point I have said I need this asset to impress people ( as you quote).
Very simple straightforward query which most of you may or may not be competent enough to comprehend and answer to the point.
I have thanked every single response (which are very few in number) that have made a positive contribution towards the OP. The rest are as useless as your response.
Now if one goes about making baseless statements and assumptions . I can only say feel sorry for your own ass.
By the way I have narrowed down to the 2. It just a matter of availability now (FIFO).
Happy to read our thoughts ,if you have something more useful to contribute. If not just another reply that gets to the bin.

      • +4

Take it easy buddy. Anyway I hope you will find a car you like. Let us know what you finally decided to buy.

      • +4

Maybe you need to go back and read your responses. Although it might be difficult, a lot have been unpublished.

      • +5

I refuse to believe that your dedicated, competent financial advisor is okay with you buying a third, brand new car to drive less than 2km daily, and anyone who is okay with this really shouldn't be doling out financial advice.

Which leaves me with the only logical conclusion - you haven't really run this past a financial advisor have you (or anyone with a modicum of common sense, for that matter)?

        • I am comfortable enough.
I don't need to ask my FA everytime I buy a blender.Anyways that is besides the point.
Your response I useless and irrelevant as the rest. Another one to the bin.

          • +5

@WPExpress: Interesting comment considering you are looking at buying the blender of the car world. Cheap and throwaway but nice and shiny looking.

          • +2

@WPExpress: The fact that you are putting the purchase of a new car in the same category of a blender is quite telling. Sorry I don't think anyone is going to be able to help you out. All the best with your new car purchase

            • -3

@inasero: I have received some very valuable contributions from a few here, which has helped me decide .I have thanked each and everyone who have made positive contribution.
              The rest ….lol .
As I have said before when elephants walk only dogs bark.

              • +8

                @WPExpress:

As I have said before when elephants walk only dogs bark.

I’m not sure where you’ve got that phrase from, or that you know what it means. You seem to be having a hard time just walking past as the dogs bark. In fact, you’ve actively engaged more than a few of the barkers.

Maybe you aren’t the elephant you think you are.

                • +1

@Euphemistic: That phrase is quite commonly used across India and that's where he caught it from. But the OP needs to remember, no matter how huge elephants are, they will always be scared of mice! 😂

        • Assuming it was a new car when bought 5 yrs ago and does 2km/day at that..

          So 14km X 52 X 5 = 3640.

Even if the OPs math is wrong and he does 10x that amount, he's only put 36,400km on a 5year car.

With the resale of this older car for the new, he might be out about $12-15k.

It might not make sense to us, but a 5 year changeover of vehicles might be a salary sacrificing arrangement. If it is, it might make more sense to effect a sale, especially if the OP is attempting to avoid a balloon payment etc.

  • +6

Where do I send my cheque for the entertainment provided above?

  • +8

This took a bit to read but what a master piece of a post, pretty similar to a plane crash

  • +1

    entertaining read.

    Always remember people..

    • 320 BMW is the symbol of STATUS! yes there are 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 series but that is irrelevant!
    • always stick to the QUESTION!
    • if irrelevant, put it in the BIN! didn't you learn that at school?!
    • when elephants walk dogs bark! woof woof!
  • What car did you buy?!?
