  • Decent machine, happy user so far. But no matter how much I tried, I could never make the froth silky enough for latte art. Is the milk frother stronger on more expensive machines?

    • +1

I have had this machine for a few years, no issue with the milk. Might be in the technique?

      • I've tried copied techniques from youtube videos but they just don't get thick fast enough before the milk gets too hot. Are you able to do latte art on these?

        • +1

I have this machine and a friend that’s a qualified barista. I can confirm the machine is up to the task of latte art. Definitely all in the technique. She did say that it took much longer than the commercial machines she is used to.

          • @Gatto: Thanks I’ll keep on trying then ^^

            • @itstuan: I can confirm the machine is decent too, consistently good coffee for the price once you get the ratios dialled in. As for the steam wand, it's not the most powerful so takes bit longer but I have got absolutely silky smooth textured foam (like paint, from coles low fat lactose free milk!) though my latte art skills are average at best.

@JS2020: This machine is junk compared to the breville $550-600 model

                • @Budju: Can you give an update on how you feel about the machine after a few months of you using it? I'm about to pull the trigger on one but saw your comment

                  • @Jethro1: Much preferred my old machine, would spend the extra to get the Breville personally. That being said there is a significant price difference.

If you can't justify spending $600+ on a machine the sunbeam will do you just fine.

I am still using the Sunbeam and it is ok.

                    • @Budju: Thanks. It's on appliances online for $386. Add an extra 3 years warranty and it comes to $476 so pretty good buy.

                      • @Jethro1: I wouldnt bother with the 3 year warranty that is like 25% increase in cost

                        • @Budju: I thought it might be a good idea. The model below this gets a bad rap for only lasting 1.5 years or so. Thought this might be the same. I'm not handy so if it dies of of warranty, I won't fix it lol. Does the coffee grinder make much mess or did it just spill onto the tray?

                          • @Jethro1: It seems mostly fine with lavazza oro beans but i once had 'grinder' beans and they were shooting out grinds onto the bench it was strange. This never halpened on the breville. But yeah it's ok with the Oro at least

                            • +1

@Budju: Thanks for getting back to me. Very handy talking to someone who actuality has one

              • -1

@JS2020: Just trying to warn people from making the same mistake I did by listening to all of these positive reviews from people who've clearly not used the Breville BES870.

    • What milk are you using? I also struggle with supermarket brand lite milk, but works fine with full cream or some more expensive 2% milks

      • I'm using A2 and those full cream available at the supermarket. Maybe I miss one very important step to get the perfect froth :(

        • +1

I've never seen A2 used in a cafe, there might be something in it as the protein is what's meant to break down for froth

          • @Paudius: Cafes use Pura milk, maybe I should try that. But I also use other full cream milk like Devondale, coles & woolworths brand with no luck.

  • How's this still in stock?

    • Says out of stock for me now. Still let's me add to cart.

  • Tempting price but not a great machine. It is pretty hit and miss with the temperature.

    • Lower price means they changed a few things to meet that lower price point, the group is aluminium for one

  • Set this machine up today as replacement for the breville equivalent I had for five years. This machine does not hold a candle to the breville. It is cheap so you get what you pay for I suppose

    • Which equivalent Breville did you compare to?

      • The BES870.

        • Ah the Barista Express. It's twice the price but yeah, the Breville BE looks nicer and probably will last longer than the Sunbeam too.

          • @itstuan: Not twice the price, closer to 25%. This Sunbeam claims an RRP of $700, which the same as the BES870 normal retail price. You've traditionally been able to get the bes870 for $550 on special, which I'd highly recommend over this model.

I picked up the sunbeam for $399 on recent special from Amazon, which was a highly rated deal on OZB. So for $150 saving (or in this deal's case $190).

            • +1

@Budju: Yes Sunbeam $700 rrp is a joke and I've never seen any retailer selling that much. I had it for $375 and happy with it. Though the BES870 at $550 is a better purchase. But still it depends on people budget & taste preferences.

What about this machine did you find inferior to the breville?

      • Here are the first things I've noticed
        1. the grinder is slow and you have to sit there holding the coffee handle while it grinds. I think the grinder is lightweight and inferior (i can sometimes hear beans making strange noises which were never present with the BES870)
        2. the steam wand is slow/low pressure and takes significantly longer to start steaming
        3. does not have a pressure gauge
        4. the shot pressure is low/slow takes longer to make shot
        5. steam wand doesn't have a handle, difficult to move
        6. the coffee handle feels light and cheap
        7. doesn't have a hot water dispensing feature (apart from shooting it slowly out of the steam wand)
        8. shot handle is difficult to put in the grinder, has firm plastic handle holder which requires some force to put in
        9. coffee tamper does not have metal base, prone to scratching

At the end of the day this machine is 25-30% cheaper than the Breville (if you get it for $550-600). It does OK, but just be aware you are getting a 30-40% more inferior product. You get what you pay for, which based on some of the earlier reviews I was not aware of.

Thanks this is what i wanted to know.

for points 1,2 & 4 are we talking less than 10 seconds difference, +30 seconds or something inbetween?

          • @brd56: Hard to say, combined i'd say about 30 seconds slower, with the added annoyance of having to stand there holding the grinder handle and watching it.

            Last points were:

10 . coffee tamper doesn't have magnetic holder to keep it handy and out of the way

11 . The sunbeam also doesn't have the option for water filters. For areas with hard water supply, that may cause issues for your machine due to calcium build up in the internal pipes.

          • @brd56: Follow up. I think I've got it down to only about 10 seconds difference. Probably not very noticeable in the scheme of things and could be down to being used to the Breville for five years.

        • +2

Though I agree with most of your points above, for the money it's a really good machine. I have been using it for almost a year now, 4 cups a day of consistently good coffee. Sure it has it's shortcomings (only the steam wand in my case) but I think it's the perfect machine to get started that has an inbuilt grinder. And you forgot to mention 1 big advantage the Sunbeam has. Cafe style 58mm group head!

          • +1

@JS2020: I did wonder if it was quite a bit bigger. Yes that is a plus. Good to hear the machine has lasted 4 years

          • @JS2020: I'm looking at getting one of these. Do you find grinding the beans into the group head makes a lot of mess or does it just fall onto the tray below

            • @Jethro1: I have to admit it's not the best. I discovered it also depends on the beans I use. Some of them get more messy, no idea why. But it's not a deal breaker. Btw I am selling mine as I've upgraded if you keen!

              • @JS2020: I'd go a new one I think, but out of interest, why did you upgrade and what to? How long did you have it and did you have any problems with it?

                • @Jethro1: Upgraded as I've always wanted a Gaggia Classic Pro. Got a really good deal, so couldn't help snapping it!. I've had it around 8 months from memory. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's perfect and has served me well with consistently good coffee. You just need to figure out the bean dial in process and the milk steaming process. Can't really go wrong then.

                  • @JS2020: Cheers. I think you'll love the gaggia
