was looking for a laptop for around $600 for basic school work. This price range is very difficult to work with to find something that won't die in a year. Unfortunately waiting is not an option.

Definitely don't get the HP, Intel Celeron CPU and eMMC storage will make you want a new laptop much sooner rather than later.
see i have looked at some of these and thought the same, but was thinking that my expectation was just too high.
Does it have to be new?
@[Deactivated]: not necessarily

arrived today
pretty good and fast, bit over budgetOver budget by 50 bucks but it's worth it.
The difference between a laptop that has a Ryzen 5 3450U + 256GB SSD + FHD display and a sub $500 one with a Celeron N5000 / N4000 with 1366 by 768 display is night and day.
Just because a computer is cheap, doesn't mean it's good value.
Lots of stores are selling crap-tops with underpowered Intel Apollo Lake or AMD Excavator / Bristol Ridge APU's paired with emmc or or mechanical HDD's. These things are pretty much e-waste the moment they roll out of the factory.
aliexpress…. gotta wait 6 months to a year
Dell Factory Outlet?
If used works for you then surface pro 4 8GB (i5-6300u) versions are available on FB marketplace for less than $500 with accessories. I got one for $300. Perfect for school as it lets you make pen notes as well. Else intel i5-4th gen dell latitudes are widely available for $300 and they are still amazing machines for the price :-)
I second this, a surface pro 4 or higher.
I used a pro 4 for uni and it did its job very very very well. Also it's light. I sold mine to my friend as she went to uni.
I got one for my mother @ $300 w/keyboard on gumtree. Plenty on gumtree.

you can consider this deal as well. Many good configs on this link for $400 :-)
Honestly, I'd look out for an older 13" MacBook Air (2015-2017) with a reasonably healthy battery and 8GB RAM. Rock solid reliability, premium feel and >10 hours of battery life for general usage. Also only ~1.3kg, so comfortable to carry around.
Should be able to find them for $400-500.
