What 65" TV - SAMSUNG Q80T vs SONY X9500H vs What else?

I'm looking for a new 65" TV.

was eyeing off an OLED but probably still a little more than what I wanted to spend. considering the amount I really use it.

After having 4 LG tv's I ended up at a Sony X9500H
I then saw that the Samsung Q80T had some decent reviews that it was better than the Sony.
also looked at the LG Nano but there's a lot of technical jargon that doesn't mean much so hard to compare. it has HDMI 2.1 but don't feel I really need it although would be nice to futureproof as I don't go buying a tv every year.

not sure what else is comparable to either of them.

I'm partial to the Sony due to Android TV (not that I really use the smart functions on the TV's) but with android I might have a few apps on it.

I have a HTPC connected to it and its basically just a computer screen, plays my KODI library in smaller file format x264/x265 videos. Nothing super quality. The missus watches a bit of FTA TV.
Don't play many games on it. I do have an old SNES, Wii and PS2 hooked up but they get covered in dust more than used.

Just waiting for hopefully a decent boxing day sale to pull the trigger.

Can anyone recommend one or another choice?

  • I've been looking into this recently:

LG Nano91 is not worth it - IPS bleed and poor HDR brightness / performance. Not in the same league as the other two.

Sony X9500H - probably the best HDR and dimming implementation right now. Would stand out as absolute class leader but lacks HDMI 2.1- so not future console proof. If you don't care about gaming 4K/120 or variable refresh rate then it's probably the best option

Samsung Q80T - disappointing lack of DolbyVision HDR. Good image quality, but very aggressive dimming to control blooming leaves image dull / less bright compared to the Sony. The local dimming is apparently very poor in games.

In summary, I would go the Sony. Also it's Android so very future proof and doesn't spam you with ads like the Samsung.

  • I’m also in the market for a 65 inch tv. Here are some things I’ve come across:

Don’t worry too much about the Android TV. You can buy a Chromecast with Android TV dongle for $99 if you really want it.

You might want to look at the Sony X9000H also. That one has 120hz/4k input (similar to Q80T) although there are some sharpness issues.

Also just on OLED, if you’re using it in a bright room, don’t bother.

And of course, go in store and compare. However do note that the screen will look different under normal lighting at home.

    • Agreed on the point about Android TV - throw an android box or apple tv on any TV and its much better than any inbuilt android tv on the tv itself.

  • I’m usually in the Sony camp but had a look at Hisense ULED Q8. That thing looks awesome

    • +2

I'd recommend the Hisense 65SX over the Q8. It's going to be 1995 vs 1745 for the Q8 in the JB Boxing Day sale, it comes with a subwoofer and it looks like an OLED but brighter with its dual Monochrome and colour LCDs

      • Are you saying Hisense S8 is better than Q8?

        • +1

No the S8 is inferior to the Q8. The SX is better. The SX is their OLED competitor, their flagship television. It's their equivalent to the LG CX and Sony A8

          • @not a bot: Id be cautious about this. The dual cell TVs have their own issues right now especially wrt to high motion content like sports and lower quality content (dvds, free to air). I suspect its a reason why they seem to be trying to flog them off.

  • I have been looking at the Q80t personally. Does anyone know how low we could expect the price on Boxing Day? Wasn’t looking for a new TV on Black Friday so not sure at what point a good deal is on this!

  • does anyone know if any of the TCL tv's are any good compared to the sammy and the sony's in the same price range eg q80t/x9000/x9500.

  • Looking exactly into this as well. I would prefer android but getting Chromecast is very easy today. Sony looks great but if I have also requirements for Xbox series X support, do I have different options than Samsung Q80T?

  • Also in researching found out the Aus Q80T does not support the wide viewing angles or anti glare that the US version does (e.g. if reading rtings). If gaming, might be best to look at Sony.

  • Cheers guys probably go the Sony.
Rooms never too bright so OLED would work but bank balance says no.

    • Dont understand the down vote?
      12 votes for Sony 10 ahead of 2nd place…

    • 65SX looks like an OLED but without the low brightness drawbacks.

  • Sony has some issues maybe. The product review website only has 5 reviews but they don’t glow about it.

    https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/sony-x9000h-series

The Sony website has 44 reviews and that’s only 3.3 stars which is telling

    https://store.sony.com.au/television-4K-X9000/KD55X9000H.htm…

How is it in practice. It seems to be software bugs. All the reviewers online froth about this tv and the TCL 8 series. So I don’t doubt it’s got the goods in terms of picture quality etc but has anyone used it long term.

    • That’s the 9000h, OP’s poll is for 9500h

  • Sony's after sale support is abysmal.

My Sony TV died after 3 years and now I'm currently fighting with them to cover the repair under Australian consumer law.

Their offer of a 30% discount off full price rrp was frankly insulting.

Just something to think about if your run into any problems outside of their 1 year warranty period.

    • Go to the retailer you purchased from. Legally they can’t just fob you off to the manufacturer
