  • Two quick comments, in general about the SMH subscriptions, rather than about this deal:
    1) If you live in an apartment, getting a newspaper subscription is a bad idea. I've tried it at two places for the SMH, and first place they'd leave it on the median strip outside the building (where it was stolen around 40% of the time), and the other time they promised they could home deliver it when signing up and then didn't (called them and they said they wouldn't deliver to our building, because it's a security builing, although it has a manned reception desk - so I had to go collect it from the newsagents, and walk past 3 convenience stores selling the same paper closer to get there). Bottom line: Home delivery of the SMH just simply doesn't work in an apartment - you either won't get it, or someone will steal it if you do.
    2) When your subscription gets close to expiring, they'll call you over and over (on the weekend, in the morning, at night - just generally at inconvenient times), from an 03 number (their call centre is in Melbourne), and they will never ever leave a message if you refuse to answer the phone for numbers you don't recognize calling at times that don't suit you (those calls are exactly why I have an answering machine!). So consider putting in a fake phone number, because they're really annoying in this regard.

    • I used to live in Sydney city and they left all papers on the reception desk with receptionist - very convenient. So probably depends on a delivery agency.

    • I used to live next to a milkbar so people would steal mine on the way to the milkbar - was annoying! I had a few unread so a few mornings I swapped my paper with an old paper to get back at them.

  • I guess you have to decide whether the savings are worthwhile based on your own circumstances. Price-wise it looks like a good deal, especially with the free voucher.

I signed up for the deal myself. I do live in an apartment, but I'm hoping that I can pick up from the local newsagent rather that having it delivered.

  • i had better deal. first time it was $79 for exactly the same offer (26 weeks x 7days).
at renewal, i waited, and was offered $79 and a coles $25 gift card.
i ended up going for the fitness first $59 offer for fri, sat, sun and mon. they gave me this even though they and fitness first no longer had a partnership, didnt need my fit first number or anything.

it all depends on your suburb, and readership numbers for advertising. but $149 is expensive!
