Anything I should change with this PC build?

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/NBwcgt

Already have the RTX 3080, NVME SSD, CPU cooler and PSU (which is major overkill, but it was a good deal).
Not 100% settled on case.

1200W PSU is an overkill. Consider buying a high efficiency 850W PSU.

Unless you're somehow married to the idea, I wouldn't buy a full tower case. Far too big and out of fashion.

    • That's just dumb to suggest him buy an lower wattage PSU when he already has a 1200w Platinum, it's better to get an overkill PSU which runs close to 50% load which is the sweetspot for max efficiency and less fan usage on the PSU possibly the fan wont even run if you have a PSU which has that feature.

It's absolutely overkill, but it was only $200. Absolutely worth it too, I've never heard/seen the fan turn on, 0RPM is amazing.

I'm currently using an aging HAF X, space isn't really a concern. Would rather the cooling/noise benefits of going oversized as it's in my bedroom.

Didn’t realise you already had the psu, so yeah no point in buying another. Wait till the cooler master fails to replace it.

My two cents - I disagree about the full tower. While you might have an opinion they are NOT out of fashion.

Im a huge hipster and I just bought a Meshify 2 XL. Big boys are back baby!

  • +2

It all looks good, even the cooler and psu you are better off having a higher than needed wattage to actually make the efficiency better.

also when the power supply is not overtaxed there is less likely chance of coil whine or fans going high speed then idle constantly.

    • Good to hear. Do you have any recommendations for quiet cases?

      • +1

If you want a full tower case, the best case to get atm is the Lian Li O11D XL also looks about $50 cheaper

  • +1

    Yeah looks beautiful.

Only thing I will say is go for the 3080 Ti :P

    1) Yeah, it looks pretty good to me, but I'm gonna be "that guy" who is gonna strongly suggest that you go with AMD. Why? You've got a 10850K + Z490 Tomahawk for $649 + $298 = $947. You could get a 5900X + good B550 board for $859 + $200-ish = $1059. That's an extra 2.8% on top of your build for significantly better performance in basically all tasks. I actually think Intel CPUs are really decently priced, but the issue is that Z490 boards are way too expensive for what they offer.

    2) I'd suggest going for a beefier cooler, at least a Dark Rock Pro 4, the Dark Rock Slim will be pretty wimpy for these high wattage CPUs. It'll run quieter and you'll have a better experience.

    3) You're overpaying for the RAM, 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL16 should be around $180-190, but shop around when you actually buy.

    4) SN550 is a pretty bottom-of-the-barrel SSD for a $3.5k build. At least go with an SN750 or 970 EVO Plus class drive.

    5) You don't need a $399 case. The Dark Base Pro 900 is huge anyway. Why do you even need a case that big? The Corsair 4000D airflow is a good choice at around $140. If you want something more premium, the new Fractal Design Meshify 2 or Define 7 is a good $250 option. If you want a big case, try the Coolermaster H500P Mesh for $250, but it's too big for what you want to put it in it IMO.

    6) Cut the wireless card and instead spend some money on a spool of Cat 6 cable.

      1. Main concern is that B550 is a dead end with AM4 being EOL. Z490 gets an extra generation with Rocket Lake, assuming Intel's usual 2 gen cycle

      2. It's rated for 175W, but I probably will need to upgrade it for any OCing

      3. Way overpaying for it, but that just seems to be the markup for RGB

      4. Yeah it definitely is, wish I waited and spent the same money on a higher end drive

      5. I'm coming from a HAF X, and enjoy having space to work in. Don't really need it, just appreciate never having to worry about compatibility or clearance. Might look at those other cases instead, just hard finding cases with a ton of features that don't look awful.

      6. Cables are great until you have to make them go through a wall, in an rental

So you'd rather spend more money now (on Z490) to be able to spend more money in the future (to upgrade to Rocket Lake) just to be able to get to around Zen 3 performance (which is what Rocket Lake is going to be around in terms of IPC)? That makes no sense to me. Why would you buy an 10850K today, then a more expensive CPU (presumably) in a year, and end up paying even more than what you would for a 5900X today for around the same performance?

You can basically rate a cooler at anything if you just put a faster fan on it. Bigger cooler isn't for lower temps necessarily, but for lower RPM fans for quieter operation.

If you like your HAF X, then just keep it. It's still a really good case with good airflow and good temperatures. FWIW, cases like the Meshify 2 are pretty big, they'll fit anything you want to throw in there within reason.

Cables are great until you have to make them go through a wall, in an rental

Run it along the floor, next to doors, around corners, whatever you have to. I personally would never use WiFi on a desktop. You just end up wasting more money on more expensive access points, more expensive NICs…etc. when you could just spend $20 on a 20m Cat 6 cable and run it across the floor.

There's only a $20 difference between the Z490 and B550 Tomahawks? I get your point about the 5900X being better in every single way, but it's also $200 (minus Z490 premium) more, if you can even buy one for the next few months. I see the 10850K as a slightly slower 5800x with more cores for $100 less, and to me that's good value. If the 5800x had 10 cores I'd probably buy it instead.

I upgrade every 2ish years, AM4 means my next upgrade requires a new motherboard, Z490 means my next upgrade will be a by-then year old Rocket Lake.

I've loved my HAF X for the last ~8 years, taken it through 3-4 builds, but it's falling to pieces. Front USB2 ports are long dead, only 1 USB3 port left. Power on button takes a few tries, a few of the drive bay covers have snapped so there's just a hole in the front, and I can't bring myself to buy weird sized fans to replace the side cover. Lost/broke half the dust filters too. Time to move on.

Given that'd mean running cable across half the house, I'm pretty sure everyone I live with would hate me for it lol. The dog would find a way to trip over it too

I've got the 3500X and whatever and it's pretty great. I'll def buy whatever the top AMD chip is again for my next one. And the top video card from either maker, just to get it out of the way.

    Big baller build.
Slap another another 1TB M.2 in there.

    C: for Win and programs
    D: Gaming
E: Monster HDD data drive with backups of C, D for fast recovery.

Sweet af. Good times for you friend.
