Working Environment- Boss Get Upsets Easy

Hi everyone.

I just change to a new job. Working as a personal assistant of my manager.

My boss is over all a nice guy. However. He gets upset easily with work and pressure.

He will be gone from happy to mad in 5 mins time.

He does not yell to me. But he swear/ bang stuff or table make annoying and loud noise.

My office is small and I can hear every single noise / swearing he made

Does that seems like a acceptable working environment to you?

    No, find a new job

If it affects your mental wellbeing then bail.

    • This is the most important and correct answer. You need to determine if you can work with this guy - if being around him constantly puts you on edge, makes you uncomfortable, you are unable to perform etc, look elsewhere. If this is just a minor thing and doesn't really affect you, then I wouldn't worry. The answer to this question is pretty personal - there isn't really a one size fits all approach.

I dunno, if he's polite with you and not passing the mood to you then I would let it slide. The minute he gets angry at you, snappy etc then I'd bail, but it seems that's his way of managing it and he keeps it to himself.

Yes, keeps the place interesting, least your boss isn't a conniving little r.. .. ehem 'non confrontational'
Give it a week or two to see if it really bothers you that much. If he starts yelling at you, different story.

Maybe you can help him find other ways to release his frustrations

    • like a playstation?

      • yeah, something like that….(insert Benny Hill face)

What changed during those 5mins? People don't get mad for no reason. Give us some examples.

Make a log book to use later.

I would find that entertaining. Plenty of material for a stand up comedy act if you are looking for a side hustle.

He's not really directing any of it at you, which at least means he's still in control.
Different story if he started yelling and screaming at you all the time for no apparent reason.

Sounds like my previous colleague, 100% bipolar disorder.

If its not directed at you, ignore it.

You wouldn't like working in some of the engineering workshops I've worked in, people will get pissed and throw hammers and bits of steel and make all sorts of noise just to announce to everyone how pissed off they are. Usually happens when they have stuffed up an important job and have to start from scratch again. Very confronting if you aren't used to it and not what I would do, but some people are like that.

  • Does that seems like a acceptable working environment to you?

Not really, if your boss is 'unstable'…

  • Thanks everyone for your reply and advice.

I am seriously not thinking to resign because of this.
It is a hard time to find jobs atm. It took me 9 months to find this position.so I am not gonna give up.

The reason of why I am asking this question is basically I want to know if I should have a meeting with my boss and tell him abt how I feel.

    • If I were you, I'd probably not confront him but to find out if he's like that to everyone (or just letting off steam within his own office), observe what everyone else thinks of him (including his tantrums) and see if you can find a way to work with/ through his moments. I can think of a few scenarios:

      A. If everyone else is scared of him but you managed to get through to him, you might become indispensable.

      B. If he treats everyone like shit, he's not going to change for you. In fact, talking to him might set him off. In which case, your best bet is to keep trying to look for a new job and bolt when you've secured something better.

    • I reckon you should just casually say to him, hey I heard you cursing this morning/the other day, is everything ok? See what he saids, maybe he doesn’t know or may give you some insight on what’s going on, you are the PA after all, so you maybe privy more information than other people.

Does he yell at anyone else? Because if he does, it'll eventually be targeted at you.

It's like a relationship, look at how he treats other people. If he just gets in a huff but doesn't emotionally hurt anyone, then I'd just roll with it. But if he treats everyone else like shit but not you, it's simply because you're new and you'll bare the brunt of it eventually.

Just ask him if he minds you wearing headphones in the office so you can "be more focused on your work".
I used to do this a lot as open plan offices drove me nuts.

Otherwise I would let it go….it's a bit unprofessional but he's not directing it at you or anyone else so it's not really worth getting labelled a "trouble maker".
