Getting one of these for my brother for Xmas and was prepared to pay nearly $100, was pleasantly surprised to see them for $55. I bought one for myself for $90 from bbqs galore a few years back and do not regret it.

There's definitely cheaper options out there but I used mine in a commercial kitchen for 18 months with no issues.

Really fast and great build quality, comparable to the thermapen. My only issue with it is the long press to turn backlight on. Minor gripe but thought I'd point it out.

Also noticed that the pt12 without backlight and shorter probe is $36.99

If you're looking for a budget option I also recommend this one for around 16 bucks. Super fast but pretty shonky build quality.

Does it have any extra features to justify the price? The "no brand one" I have is accurate and has lastes more than 2 years. The Inkbird one(popular her on OZB) is less than half that price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/590348

    • I haven't tried the ones you've mentioned but this one is fast and like I mentioned, great build quality compared to the cheap one I posted in comments. Maybe it's not for you, for me I appreciate the super fast response and great build. I have used plenty of cheap ones and the thermopro mentioned above is the only one I've used that comes close to the speed of the javelin or thermapen. For me personally yeah it's worth the extra price for something that doesn't feel like it's going to break every time I open it.
Amazing ribs review of the javelin pro

My "el cheapo" is fast too, actually it's instant. I'm not saying that this item is not good, i'm just saying that it does exactly what the $15 probes do

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07MNMHY5Z Paid $10 for this (now $12.50)
Not trying for a 'good for me' post, just cheaper by a mile, rock solid and fast AF.

    • Wow, if that's really as fast as it says that is incredible value. If I'd not just bought the jav pro I'd grab one to test out.

    • Not AAA battery? Replacement would be annoying.

      • I wouldn't know.

Everyone who cooks at home should have a decent thermometer.

I use a thermapop (they make thermapens), had it for years works really well. I would've bought a thermapen but they are super expensive. If this is anything close to a thermapen, then it's worth it if you're going to use it everyday.

    • I've used thermapens and they're great, although every single one I've used has crapped out after a year or two heavy use. The longest lasting one I've had was actually the original javelin which I got from a mass drop but it is too short to get to the centre of a large pork shoulder

    • if that's the case just go straight to Meater+. I own one, got it for $175 but it has the following:
      Features

Built-in Bluetooth repeater in the charger extends the wireless range up to 50m.
100% Wire-Free: No wires. No fuss. The first truly wireless smart meat thermometer.
2 Sensors, 1 Probe: Dual temperature sensors can monitor internal meat temperature and ambient.
Guided Cook System: Walks you through every step of the cooking process to guarantee perfect and consistent results.
Advanced Estimator Algorithm: Estimates how long to cook and rest your food to help plan your meal and manage your time.
Connectivity Suite: Monitor your cook from a phone or tablet over Bluetooth. Extend your wireless range using MEATER Link WiFi and the MEATER Cloud.

      Probe Specs

      Bluetooth LE 4.0 wireless connection
      Maximum internal temperature: 100°C (meat)
      Maximum ambient temperature: 275°C (cooker)
      Stainless steel and ceramic construction
Water resistant and easy to clean
      Dishwasher safe
Rechargeable: Over 24 hours of continuous cooking
Dimensions: 130mm length and 6mm diameter

      • No good if you have to consecutively check the temperature of a number of different items though which is where having a quick probe thermometer really shines

        • you can have more than one, and each one of those will give you the temp graph, something that the instant one cannot
offer. Also you do not need to open the lid multiple times to check the temp

      • The inkbird bbq go 2-probe (Bluetooth) is $39.99 and $29 when on special.

        • I like the Inkbird products, however the Meater+ is a completely wireless solution(no wires to the bluetooth base).
Also, another alternative to the Meater+ is the ECPIN, a capacitor powered device that's also a bit cheaper

  • Never had a probe thermometer before but OP has convinced me this is a bargain and so obligatory buy for me!

Just wonder if anyone has some good links for How to use probe thermometers for cooking for dummies? Have tried some quick google searches but they are still a bit vague to me.

Really depends what you're cooking. For a whole chicken for example you'll want to take a few measurements. The breast is thick but can be cooked to a lower temperature than the thigh and leg. I like to take the chicken off when the thickest part of the leg is around 75 and hopefully the breast is at around 60-65. Once it's rested a while those temps will rise.

      • Thanks sourdawg, it sounds more complex than I thought. Will definitely sit down and go through it and do plenty of experiments once the item arrives.

Also depends how you're cooking. Chicken isn't likely safe at 60c if you're using a fast method with very high heat.

This has some good advice, but temperatures are in Fahrenheit (which I use because I do lots of American BBQ).

Getting one of these for my brother for Xmas

Have you considered a forehead infrared thermometer for your brother? It might be more comfortable to use…

  • Nice find OP. Bought.

An instant read thermometer for that price I'd be expecting it to have an infra red laser senser built in…

  • Thanks OP,

Been wanting to get a thermapen but can’t justify the price. This seems like next best option at much more reasonable cost.

    Got the black sesame :)
