Ford Falcon BA Shift Lock Release Button

AFAF BA Falcon 4-Spd Matic

Where's the Shift-Lock Release Button, if in case the clutch stuck in P? Other makers shifters have that.

If the shifter moves but indicator on dash says it's still in P, will question 1 fix it?

Google, google images, nothing.

Cheers

  • Where's the Shift Release Button, if in case the Park brake gets stuck?

    I'm confused

    • Same… If the park brake is stuck, no amount of shift release button is going to fix that problem…

Trying to release shifter stuck in P

  • Is the park brake stuck on or stuck off?

  • Is the transmission stuck in P?

You can shift it but indicator on dash says it's still in P

        Sounds like a busted linkage.

        Might need this

  • Are you saying that you cannot move the gear lever out of Park? Or perhaps that you can move the gear level, but the dash display still says that it's in Park, and the car does not move? It sounds like a fault rather than something that you can fix with a "shift release button", if there was one.

There is no clutch in an automatic transmission. What is the "bite" that you are talking about?

Sounds like a case of someone with no idea telling someone with no idea to ask a question on the internet.

        You're not wrong. LOL

        • Maybe just advise your friend to get a mobile mechanic around to diagnose and repair. DIY appears to be not an option on this one.

    • An average 3-6speed Automatic transmission has between 2 & 4 clutch packs consisting of 4-8 clutch discs each. OP's question was quite clear….also.

    OK. I'll bite again

I don't think there is one in the ba transmission and in this case you don't need it as the shifter moves as expected.

No. I'm almost certain the linkage is broken somewhere. Probably some aging plastic part in the link to the transmission has become brittle and no longer functions as intended.

Given your friends current knowledge she/he will need to pony up and get a mobile mechanic to check it out and repair.

IANAL and also I Am Not A Lube-mobile

Falcon doesn't have a shift lock. The shift cable ball end has broken off at the transmission end more than likely. You can buy an entire new cable, or modify the bracket on the transmission to be a stud, and reuse your old cable, which is a much cheaper and faster option.

    • This guy mechanics.

    • Cheers. I will sound knowledgeable now

  • My Car has an over-ride in a little hatch on top of the steering wheel column

  • This might be a broken shift cable. I've had this happen before. You can generally tell if the shifter is connected, it will be very loose if it moves and no gear is selected. It is a physical connection so if it's not selecting then the cable is probably broken. There is a slight chance it's selecting but the computer still thinks it's in another gear and will not turnb over the motor (turn the key to accessory and then move the shifter) but this is unlikely.

Get under the car and look for where the cable connect to the transmission shift lever, should be on the left front end of the transmission. See if the cable is connected. You can also hand move the shift lever whilst under the car to switch gears (put it into neutral this way) - just make sure the hand brake is on!. You can do it without jacking the car up. get your phone camera and take a picture or video with the flash on

Just hope it's the transmission end of the cable not the gear selector or it's a pain in the arse. Falcons have the tendency to break these bushings after about 10-15 years and at the worst times possible… like at the shops whilst in reverse. Don't ask me how I know.

They sell direct bushing replacements on ebay for the transmission end. Takes 5-10 mins to chuck in.
