Should Activewear Be Allowed at Work?

Genuine question

Someone at work was complaining that they couldn't wear Lorna Jane to the office.
Just wanted to see what the bargaining community thinks.

I personally think that Isowear should stay in Iso, but I don't want to be a downer.

    No
Unless maybe if you work at a gym

    • +45

      or at lorna jane office!

      • Lmao

      • Used to work near one. There were particular offices in our building that were particularly popular with particular people at particular times of day…

        • +1

          How particular are we speaking?

        • Could you BE any more particular?

    • No
Unless maybe if you work at a gym

      * Except for the cleaners.

  • +45

    Depends on body shape :P

    • +27

      Correct answer.

      Answer is conditional.

Must be female, size 10 or below.

Any other scenarios, please office attire.

      • +9

        The MAMIL’s are worse.

        • +6

Is that a prolapse in your pants or are you just happy to cycle to work?

          • +2

@Scrooge McDuck: Comments like this are pretty much the only reason to still visit ozbargain :)

        • +3

totally agree (on both Lycra and Lorna Jane) - hence I think it should be banned.
for reference, this was in a super corporate environment with regulatory people, doctors, lawyers, and then me.. (bargainer)

          • +2

@mousie: I still remember a dude showed up to the Cashrewards OzBargain party in tights, like with no shorts over the top.

            What has been seen… O_O

        • MAMIL

TIL, not that I necessarily needed too…

          Link for the curious…

      • Conditions were met.

      • +1

        Perv

      • Must be female, size 10 or below.

Sounds nice, but then you get accused of ogling your work colleague, no thanks.

        • Well whoever wants to wear active wear in a corporate envrionment either wants to be ogled or is too lazy to change.

      • +1

Get real. She has to have bootay for gym pants.

        • +1

Everyone is a bit different which is great. I really dislike Thiccc but can understand why others like it.

      • +1

Why is this limited to females. Same applies to MAMILs

      • -2

        Not even that.

"Activewear" is now an excuse to go out showing your curves and how "hot" you are.

Whether you are fit, skinny, not skinny, it's just ridiculous. And quite frankly not sexy.

    • +9

Since covid there are far too many size 16+ wearing active wear…. should be illegal.

    • +1

Do you offer a Lorna Jane discount on cars? Asking for a friend.

      • Depends on body shape 😛

        • +4

I am looking for a hatchback.

  • +13

Ask if they are okay with you wearing budgie smugglers and a rashy. Explain that's your workout wear for exercising. If they say no, ask them to explain why it isn't okay, but why their workout wear is acceptable.

    • How do you know OP is male?

      • I am.
Hence the problem. I kinda find it.. Distracting.

        • I kinda find it.. Distracting.

          In a good way? ;)

        • Especially wearing as a male person.

      • I didn't assume genders, you did. Anyone could wear the described attire.

    • You work out in your budgie smugglers?

      • Open water swims, definitely; gyms and squash court, not so much.

  • It's fine.

  • +7

After activewear someone will ask for swimmingwear

    • +15

What modern office doesn't have Nude Fridays?

      • +6

I'd say the Catholic Church, but then I'd be lying!

  • +18

    a phrase comes to mind…

"just because you can, doesn't mean you should"

    • +2

Making dinosaurs is a bit more extreme than wearing active wear in the office 🤣

  • +3

I want to work in this bougie office

  • +3

    Pointless without saying what job

  • +3

I thought I was living on the edge wearing jeans instead of tailored pants into the office and sit behind a computer all day.

Activewear if it improves comfort and doesn't distract others in conduct of business

  • +11

I would say it depends on your line of work. I'd prefer to see my mortgage broker sharply dressed in a suit rather than Lorna Jane yoga tights or a bike bib.

    • +4

By the same token I’d prefer my gym instructor in active wear rather than a suit.

  • +4

in an office nah, not really appropriate. I wouldn't like to see my boss walk around in exercise gear.
If you work at a Cafe or gym, yes as you're fairly mobile.

    • One of my friends wont buy coffee from people dressed in activewear as it makes him think of sweat. Each to their own I guess..

      • +4

I think you may need a new friend

  • +6

Depends on the state; that's a bit overdressed in Qld ;)

    • Some of those Yoga pants ride pretty low. As long as you can see the Tramp Stamp it would, probably, pass muster up there. Then you have the guys with so much butt crack showing you can see through the shorts to the thongs.

      • Yes. This was the issue. I think she thought she was Kim Kardishian

This someone is a Karen or signaler?

  • +13

Regardless of the answer, it just shows that a lot of OZBARGAIN members are Misogynist dicks.

    • +7

      And?

    • +2

      Misogynist dicks

      Pretty sure mine is philogynist.

    • +1

      It's disgusting isn't it?

So many leery, pervy men who think it is okay to pass judgement on women based on looks and put conditions on what they can where and when.

And to admit that women who meet said conditions distract them to the point of not being able to work. Grow up.

      • +3

You are completely right that men shouldn't be pervy and pass judgement on females wearing such attire and the same goes for women passing judgement, body shaming or making jokes about men wearing such attire. We know that never happens right?

        • +5

Your 'what about-ism' and sad cry of women doing the same is irrelevant and far less likely. I haven't seen a thread like that on here.

Passing comments like those in this thread about women's clothes and bodies are symptomatic of, and support the development and persistence of the bigger issues in society - men seeing women's bodies as theirs. Theirs to comment on, theirs to touch, theirs to hurt. These attitudes towards women are pervasive and harmful.

I hope that none of you have children and hear you speak like this. Your boys will pick up that this is okay. Your girls with grow up thinking their body is something that must please men.

How about people be respectful of each other, regardless of gender, size, clothes etc.

The question of acceptability of activewear in the office is legitimate. The comments in response about size and weight and bums and b00bs are not.

      • There has to be a line somewhere. Some RSL clubs would deny entry to activewear, some wont care.

    • +4

Do you need to speak with the manager?

  • +5

Not sure why clothes matter as opposed to ability and merits of the job.

    • +4

This. I could never understand the need for a suit and tie. As long as you get the job done, who cares what you wear.

      • +2

particularly those WFH, as long as the webcam is not turned on :D

        • +1

You could work from home naked if you have the webcam only showing your face on meetings.

          • +1

@brendanm: hahaha - yeah, just don't "accidently" stand up.

            • @SF3: Almost as bad as "accidentally" taking your laptop into the toilet.

  • A couple days a week, yes. Better than sweatpants.

  • +4

I have worn my Lorna Jane leggings to the office! Activewear can be made classy/business casual in a heartbeat, Athleisure is totally a thing.

  • +10

^^ lots of disgusting people on here

i work in an office and I wish it was more acceptable to 'stay' in active wear - i would go to work in my corporate wear and at lunch/afternoon go for a run. it's an extra half hour to have a quick shower and change back into corp wear for the last few hours of the day. in summer if i end up sweating a lot, i of course need to shower anyway but in the cooler months - i'd rather just get back to work. It's also really discouraging in terms of "i only have 30 min to spare, I could knock back a quick run but i need x time to shower and change back so I cant"

We're mostly not client facing in the office - just sit behind a computer.

Any activewear should follow the same rules of modesty as corporate wear.

I really wish there was more focus on physical and mental health in the work place. Exercise is so important for overall wellbeing and employers should be encouraging staff to get out and exercise. If that means letting people finish the work day in modest gym gear, that's the least they can do.

    • Thanks Cheapskatequeen

In these instances, they were more of a fashion statement - rather than a practicality.
I used to cycle to work, and would use the corp showers - wear baggier clothes, but yes, in a formal meeting would have to suit and boot it again.

    • +4

If you need to shower, then you need to shower anyway.

If you don't then just get changed without one, how long does that take, 1 min?

    • +2

Personally I think it is inappropriate but don't care enough to ever kick up a fuss about it but just on the whole not changing after going to the gym thing a lot of people think that they can just skip a shower and stack on deodorant or perfume and its fine, whilst that is preferable to BO it still isn't great.

I've worked with a number of people over the years, both male and female, who would do this - the fumes can be so over powering and make one feel sick.

    • +2

it's an extra half hour to have a quick shower and change back into corp wear

Think it is for the benefit of others that you don't smell like sweat and then dried sweat. Not sure how your work colleagues would like the office to smell like a gym bag.

    • +1

If you needed the shower then you SHOULD be having the shower, not sure how what you wear afterwards affects the time taken? I sure hope you didn't intend to get back into the activewear you had on that triggered your need for a shower.

  • +6

Maybe you should mine your own business and what others are wearing and actually focus on your work?
    Just a thought

    • +3

It sounds like op can't focus because of the eye candy.

    • +3

      thanks for your opinion

    • you should mine your own business

      Isn't that what Twiggy does?

      • Twiggy just pumps indue and bashes people on social welfare whilst hoarding n95 masks from RFS crew

    • I didn't know OP was in the mining business. Damn he must be rich.

  • theyre called mumblers….cos you can see the lips move, but you cant hear what it is saying

  • +1

WTF. can society please start having some standards. Dressing is already 1000% more comfortable than it was a hundred years ago, especially for women lol. You can basically get suits in jersey if you really have to.

  • Photo please

  • Active wear shouldn’t be allowed anywhere. Any Seinfeld fan will tell you that attractive people are in the vicinity of 5% tops. Oh the humanity!

    • +1

      Undateable!

  • +14

Love the casual sexism in this thread.
This boys club shit needs to stop. "If it's an attractive woman they can wear anything that shows off their shape wink wink". Get a life and stop treating women like objects.

People wear clothes to be comfortable - not to be commented on about their body.

I ran out of down vots about 10 comments in.

I am disappointed in the Oz B moderators for allowing this sh*t to continue.

That is how the world works.

      • Misogynist.

      • +4

It's the way it currently works because people perpetuate it. Have you not seen the campaign "Racism. It stops with me"?

"Other people are doing it so I will" is not an excuse for anything. Have a brain cell and realize that you are demeaning people with your actions.

        • actionswords

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will have me in therapy.

    • -2

Sound a lot more like your just projecting your self confidence issues and taking it out on men with bigoted comments to be honest.

      • +4

Well firstly I am a man - so if you're trying to implying I'm a woman with self confidence issues you are very far off the mark.

Secondly you haven't even addressed my point at all - you have only made personal comments. Try again.
