Should Family Guy Call It Quits?

I've been rewatching Family Guy during lockdown and I love it, but the new episodes (S19; currently being released weekly) seem to be quite laugh-free. I'd love for this to just be a disappointing trend for the first 6-ish episodes I've seen of the new season, but I'm worried we've seen the best of FG.

Should FG call it quits and stop making new episodes?

You know…… if you no longer enjoy the show, you don't have to watch it. Other people might be enjoying it still.

Fam, it's 2020 … don't you know that if an individual doesn't like something they should immediately demand it be cancelled?

I still enjoy watching FG, but it's like all American shows, flogged to death long past their use by date.

Standards have to drop as the writers run out of new ideas.

    • I think there are plenty of ideas, just none of them will be ok with the whining minority. I don't know why they bend over to them.

    • Na, normally it is key employees moving on.

The Simpsons should go long before Family Guy.

      Oh hell no!

      Hard dislike for this comment

So long as the producers are making money they'll keep making more Family Guy…

Whether you like it or not is irrelevant.

  • +19

Simpsons is a good example of being on air for too long… that it is no longer funny. But as long as it is making money I guess. Some peeps would still enjoy it. Same goes to family guy.

    • +14

Yep.. simpsons should have given up 10yrs ago when it ran out of ideas.

      • +11

South Park is still good ☺️👍

        • +1

South Park is hit and miss for me, I kind of lost interest after they started serialising storylines

          • +6

@brendanq: I actually think thats when they took it to the next level. Season 20 is amazing.

          • +4

@brendanq: Judging by your comments I think the problem is you, not the shows. You've grown out of the style of humour they're using 😔

        • +1

Still love South Park, they are just as witty and edgy, really good. They just roast everyone, they don't care haha.

          • +2

@techlead: Yeah South Park has a wit that none of the other animated shows seem to have. Although you need to put yourself in the time frame the episode is released in as the relevance (eg PC principal) can feel outdated.

            • +1

@dickiee: ahh yea, but still works, still a lot of PC stuff happening albeit it has reduced alot.

The chin diapers gets me every time I see it in public, I have no idea why people do that. Don't wear the mask if you are gonna use it as a chin diaper lol, it serves no purpose, just makes you look goofy.

Still better than 99% of everything else on TV. Excluding live sport.

Anything on TV is better than sports.

They should've called it quits years ago

Every show should end well before they jump the shark.

    Oh, have you not heard?

Perhaps they've stooped as low as they can go.

  • +4

    It is still running?

    • Yep currently season 19

    • I have already gradually moved away from watching it without even realising it was still going!… Probably because my partner doesn't like it and mostly controls what is watched in our house

  • +3

I was actually just thinking last night as I watched Ep 7 and 8 of the current season that it is becoming noticeably less funny. Must say I thought Episode 8 was the least funny episode ever.

I have been a fan forever and even though later seasons are not as good as the early ones, this season it has become much more noticeable.

I'll probably keep watching a while longer, but the signs are not good.

    • I've rewatched every season a few times over now, there are hits and misses of course, but this new one struck me as particularly poor compared to the others. Like they'd overhauled the writing team ala the Simpsons following the golden years.

      • +3

I haven't watched every episode, but have watched most from the last few seasons. Although the quality has declined a bit, you are definitely right that this season is MUCH worse than the previous ones.

Maybe the writers are literally phoning it in this season with the pandemic?

      • +1

        https://www.ratingraph.com/tv-shows/family-guy-ratings-8370/

Looks like seasons 12, 17, 18 & 19 are the worst seasons by the user ratings (move your mouse over each season and it highlights on the trend graph) with season 12 taking the crown for worst season by ratings. The two worst episodes are s12e06 life of brian and s17e16 you can't handle the booth.

Lot of episodes below the average line for those 4 seasons.

I'm an absolutely phenomenal human being :)

        • You seem fun. We shouldn’t hang out!

  • Pretty hard to keep the standard when you get over 10 years on the board. Animation shows can keep going as the characters don't age, unless you have another device like Dr Who and can have a renewal every now and then.
Trying to get new viewers, remain relevant is tough - Simpsons ran out of steam after 10 years.
The only genre that can notch up the years are soap operas - Coronation Street is up to 60 and still top of the ratings.

    • Coronation Street is up to 60 and still top of the ratings.

That is because not enough sun in the UK during winter, then during the summer can't afford to travel when min wage is GBP 7 an hour.

UK is the only reason that Neighbours ran for so long.

Brits seems to like soap operas that are mostly based in an indoor setting.

      • they think sitcoms are like real which is 1 reason why england is rapidly becoming a third tier country…

Family guy is fine. I think you might have run out of laughing gas, might be time for a top up?

    • Where do I source this laughing gas?

  • +2

Still watch Family Guy, like many have said, better than watching sports and its nearly tennis season and cricket is about to flood the channels as well!
What about Big Mouth? Best animation since air was invented.

    • Big mouth is fkn hilarious. And you either find it the funniest thing ever or think it is utterly disgusting. Which I think it's funny.

    • I'm not sure if you mean it's the best animated show in terms of overall quality, but it certainly isn't the most well animated show. Personally, I don't find the animation quality particularly impressive at all.

  • If it stops being offensive, yes. But somehow I doubt that we’ll run short of things to be offended about anytime soon.

    Long live the king!

  • +1

Reminds me of the time I asked Ronald McDonald was he a friend of Jeffrey Epstein…

  • +2

    Simpsons should go first.

    • No way, Simpsons is better today than it has been in 15 years.

      • That's not too hard … all the classic quotes I love certainly aren't from the last 15 :P

If it's widescreen, I usually don't bother watching it; or if I do, it usually does end up being pretty much like Block-O-Land.
(native widescreen, not the butchered widescreen crop either)

        • It's not the same show as it was in Season 1-10 or 1-15. But it's a good show, the animation is great, the writing is good. What more do you need from a cartoon. It would be great if it was OG Simpsons quality. But it's something different, it's probably better than any other animation of Fox now that King of the Hill is cancelled. New Simpsons is better/funnier than current Bobs Burgers, Family Guy, American Dad.

The manatees should have been retired from the writing tank long ago.

Watched this episode the other day. They've had some great musical numbers over the years!

      • Dunno if age or what, but I don't recall big musical pieces in recent seasons.

  • All of these shows go great for a few years and then the writers go sour/ideas dry up and the characters either change massively or become caricatures of the original character. As others have said, just don't tune in. I only worry that there's a lowering of the bar leaving this stuff for too long. Audiences start to accept less and less quality over time.

  • +3

It’s always sunny in Philadelphia is in its 15th season, and it’s still funny. Highly recommend it, available on Prime Video.

  • I think the current seasons are great. I lol hard at the latest ones. I've rewatched them and the humour is on point imo without needing to rely heavily on cut scene or show tunes. Sure the originals are "classics" but that's because we've all seen them many times, that's how things become classics.

Same with the Simpsons, people hate the new ones, but when you watch it a couple of times they're great. I love seasons 19 to 24 which many people say they don't like or stopped before they aired.. I'm yet to re-watch ones after that. But I'm sure they'll be much the same.

  • People need to pay attention to Bob's Burgers and jump on the bandwagon. Still as hilarious 11 seasons in. Mike Judge is bringing Beavis and Butthead back next year, hope King of the Hill follows soon thereafter. So much potential with the state of America right now.

  • Family Guy stopped being funny for me when I turned 14.

  • Yes

  • I used to watch a lot of Family Guy long ago, but the characters became a little tiresome and predictable. Also, Peter turned from a lovable fool into a character that's extremely nasty to everyone.

I now watch comedy anime to get my animation fix. There's no end of great stuff to watch on Crunchyroll and Hidive.

  • Maybe they are just out of ideas? Simpsons keep it going if you are into more childish cartoon. South Park is also in decline, lost it's characters identity, so much potential, much less creativity.

  • Ahhh to be 14 again.

  • never found family guy funny, for me south park is way more witty and funnier. but the best of all of them is rick and morty

  • How about American dad? That still doing it for everyone?

  • Haven't watched family guy in yonks

Why should they cancel it just because the OP doesn't like it anymore If I don't like a show I just don't watch it

They should cancel home & away before they cancel family guy

  • Im a huge cartoon connoisseur.

From anime, to webtoons, to cartoons…. I'm in.

Family guy has evolved well beyond what it originally was. The humor used to be very slapstick and peter focused.
Now the characters are known, its done a hard shift toward quick wit from Stewie, and social commentary from Brian. Its certainly not going to be popular with their original audience, but its still a comedy; just a different type.

Simpsons did a massive nosedive around season 12 where they tried to be topical. there was ladygaga episodes and family-guy-esque observations; very unquotable 5 years later. Luckily that only hung around for 3 or so seasons; anyone who 'gave up' during the topical period, id suggest trying the latest season. It's very akin to season 3; still a little tired, but overall, once again a broad sitcom style timeless vibe again.

American Dad had a similar issue after about season 4, where they relied on Rogers personas to create situations to escape; it was predictable and very jarring. Luckily this too only lasted a season or 2; we see Roger out of character more often now, and Steve is back as a key coming-of-age trope, and Stan with his insecurities. American Dad is very hit and miss, but luckily is trending more toward hit.

Japanese and french animation is still better than the "big 3" out of America currently; but it really depends what you look for in an Animation.

Family Guy, especially, is trending toward "a night with that family you know", rather than massive laughs, which i really enjoy, but lots of people tune into cartoon for comedy alone, not slice-of-life, so they're bound to lose some viewers; usually the extrovert loud type, so you'll hear a lot more negative online; where most of the introverts who are just enjoying watching 'people they know' slice of life, will just tune in quietly.

All in all, they're all very different (except Simpsons; found its roots again), so id expect the audiences to be shuffling around.

    • +2

Great to hear new Simpsons is decent. Haven't watched since it became crappy

      • Yeah, it's not back to season 1 or 2 quality; but it's easily as good as season 4\5 or so where homer became less of a well intended accident prone husband, and became a bit of an oaf.

All in all, if you used to like them and are happy with comedy more in line with Futurama, than classic Simpsons, you'll like where they've gone.

  • I had no idea they were still making it, a full 16 years after I stopped watching.

  • +1

Recurring theme in animation - Simpsons, Family Guy, Archer have all have hung around too long, but can’t really blame the makers if they’re still getting paid.

  • +1

Just like everything else coming out these days, it's gone politically correct. That's just imo.

    • +1

Yeah, there was an online rumor that went around about banning Apu, because "He's an Indian stereotype".
(creators denied it, but the internet is powerful; it seemed true)

      Err, yes, but there are positive and negative stereotypes;

Everything about Apu in his personal life is the most golden a human can be (there's even a dating episode where all the women fall for him).

The ONLY negative trait is that he's an unhealthy-workaholic, but just because he is Indian, people assume it's racially driven.
You have to be racist to even go there! That 'trait' is much more known of the high-class-white-yuppie trope, followed possibly by the rich-jewish-store-owner trope.

Being a staff member who loves his job a little too much, isn't racist; Hell, they have James Woods praise him for it, when he's training to be a clerk.

White knight level PC will eventually die down; I just hope it's while I'm still young enough to enjoy it.

      • One major aspect of the Apu controversy was his character being voiced by a white man. In 2018 this kind of thing turned very non PC.

        • So is Cleveland in Family Guy,
          All 3 Animaniacs 'warners'.
          And Carl Carlson.
          And Dr Hibbert.
          And several Bobs Burgers characters.
          And Diane from BoJack Horseman.
Uncle Iroh in Avatar:TLA was voiced by a Japanese man, despite being a Chinese influenced world.
          …..Bound to be others….

The issue? The objection to it, is so racist!
Someone is telling a professional voice actor, they're not allowed to do something because of their skin colour.
If their voice fitted the characters best of all, then their skin colour shouldn't ban them from the job!

"OMG, he's Indian, and a white man voices him" - Should NOT be the issue.
It SHOULD become an issue if an INDIAN VOICE ACTOR Tried out for the part, was good enough, but was overlooked.

I agree with racial equity movements, but so many of them are doing it, by creating more racism.
Remove racism, don't just change what it is, ffs.

        • The thing that annoys me with the PC crowd is they are a low number but their opinion is forced apon the greater majority

          • @Mosher: Personally (and im sure it already came through a little, above) I hate them because most of them are NOT actually being PC.

They're simply attacking majority with a minority, and relying on ignorance or fear to stop people speaking up.

Even such touchy topics like "the N word"; you often hear terms like 'reclaim' or 'Reappropriate'; which i totally agree by all means!!

Take the sting out of such a hate filled word. Let it mean 'brother' or 'friend' or such.

But right now, people use it 'freely' in songs, but tell others "no your skin is wrong to use it" even in a context where it could logically only be positive.
