Unless you're desperate for one now, it would be best to wait until the MX450 trickles into Dell machines. It's already appearing in some Lenovo ones.

I was going to ask. Doesnt the 1165G7 come with Xe graphics, which are almost equivalent with the MX350? Wouldnt having both just mean extra power draw?

      • +2

Xe still has a lot of driver issues to resolve. The GPU performance was only OK in the sample Intel sent around which had a much higher TDP threshold. Intel also wouldn't let reviewers test battery life on the sample. Laptops with actual TDP limits and decent battery life, which you and I can buy, are experiencing much worse performance. If you want to see actual issues with with Xe graphics, watch the UFD Tech review of the Dell XPS 13, where Fortnite stutters at 720p around the minute 5:50 mark.

At least with an MX450 you will have proper driver support for games!

Warning: Hold off buying this Laptop

I have one here from the last eBay sale, constant blue screens. This is on a fresh Windows 10 2020H2 install. Then the only things installed after Windows is the Dell Update to get the latest drivers, firmware, etc, and the latest Windows Updates. Constant blue screens, it disconnects from my Dell D6000 dock at work and home (so I know it's not the docks).

The Docks both have the latest firmware and work perfectly with my 1.5-year-old Latitude 14. I've put a ticket into Dell for a refund.

Running HeavyLoad almost always induces a BSOD.

Would be awesome if any Ozbargainer purchases one in the last deal have and feedback on blue screens, the ones I'm getting are:

    KMODE EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED
    KERNEL SECURITY CHECK FAILURE
    IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL

I really wanted to love this laptop as I've had create experiences with Latitudes, the specs are amazing for the money, but BSODs during a Teams call TWICE isn't on! I'm back to using my trusty Latitude 14

Sounds like a gaming laptop to me

    • I find it's a little hit and miss with dell, but their customer support is amazing and is the main reason I went and purchased another a few months after I had a DOA

      • I had the exact opposite experience unfortunately, with a Dell G5 SE gaming laptop with overheating issues. I ran the Alienware and Dell update tools to make sure the BIOS and drivers were update to date. Dell support had no idea that some of the software on the gaming laptops are different and the conversation with them just kept going around in circles.

I had similar issues with the previous generation from this deal.

Beautiful laptop, but constant BSODs. Ended up returning it.

I was going to give the same warning! Am returning mine after 8 days. In addition to BSODs it also has this annoying auto screen dimming feature also reported on the new XPS 13 and there's (so far) no way of turning this off. Dell support has also been useless… I even did a full OS recovery twice and the same problems persisted.

Finally, it gets quite hot and loud under load plus the build quality is not that good.

Specs look good on paper but sadly it didn't live up to my expectations.

      • I think I saw the auto dim feature in the bios setting recently in another Dell so check that out.

        • Nah, it's not there…

    • Sounds like you need to contact Dell Support and take advantage of your warranty service.

  • I bought one from last deal. From my perspective, it's been good working regarding video watching, office works . Hm except for gaming. This one is not for gaming.. but for office work , it is quite good spec.

People pay this much for mx350? Wow..

    • I couldn't care less about the video card. For the price the specs are great. Worth the money with 16:10 2560x1600 display. So nice to look at (when it's not BSODing)

Aah.. I see. So..I'm curious..roughly how much is an inexpensive laptop with a QHD screen? At what screen size can most ppl not tell between FHD and QHD? Also, for what uses is FHD inadequate on a 14 inch laptop? Wouldn't you just pair with a much larger 2,3 or 4k monitor? Like.. photo/graphics work, on the road / at the beach / cafe I guess? Cheers!

        • Scaling. Just like your phone, tablet etc does. The result is a much nicer screen to look at. My last 3 laptops have been ~$2000 all with integrated graphics. It's not hard to imaging that some other other use cases the laptop than playing games, like using them to make an income.

  • This one or Macbook Air with M1 chip? Which is more powerful?

    • +4

You're comparing Apple to oranges… Think you need to decide what system u want/need first.

    • If what you want to do can be done on OSX then the MacBook would last you longer than this would.

In case anyone is still following this thread, my blue screens seem to have been cured by: kb4586853. No more BSOD. I had the machine running overnight with HeavyLoad CPU, Memory and Graphics test, also running youtube videos constantly overnight. That combo previously would have it crashing within an hour or two. Going to try it in anger tomorrow at work but I think it might be solved.
