Why not free and opensource https://rclone.org/

    • I could never get rclone to work properly, even with rclone browser. The "sync" took hours, even though all the files were already synced. I think I must've got mine when it was free, because I went to sign up my Google account, and was pleasantly surprised that I already had a license! Does the job with very little fuss.

    • Rclone interface isn't friendly (like native clients) TBH. This is a direct replacement for Backup and Sync, Rclone is not.

I just wish Back and Sync was as good as Dropbox, or they just made File Stream available to non G-Suite.

      • I agree with this - insync is really the sync tool you want if you use Google drive. Rclone is fine for a techie but when I bought an insync license a few years ago, i was nowhere well versed enough to use these. I just wanted a dropbox-like client for Google drive

    • I use rclone on a daily basis and it is an amazing tool. I manage multiple cloud instances across multiple devices - local and remote - and it does (almost) everything I need.

2-way sync would be nice. I know it's in the pipeline… sort of.

    • Theres also syncthing if you want to avoid 3rd party cloud servers. I use it for work and its fantastic.

      • syncthing (or resilio) is for different purpose; to share your file.
rclone and insync is to mount remote file system like google drive.

        • Yes but you can use it to do basically the same job. I "mount" my remote work PC directory by having it constantly in sync with the same directory on my local PC.

No need for 3rd party cloud. And stuff like file attributes are synced properly too. It uses rsync protocol so pretty lightweight on bandwidth.

My reservation to this software is that it's proprietary and I don't think the source code is available, so who knows what they are doing with your data. I also assume it deals in whatever public API's are available. So note sure if things get rate limited and you never know when Google will pull the plug, just like everything else.

    • This will at least leave you with your current files, unlike "music", and can be pointed to alternate on-line storage.

I hear the Monolith Formerly Known as Google/Alphabet are considering changing their name to "Intertidal Storage Solutions".

    • Yeah, that is a bit of a concern. This is what they say in their FAQs

Does Insync store any of my files?

No we don't. None of your files ever pass through our servers.
Does Insync store my Google account login information?

Insync stores your Google email address but never your Google account password.

Insync uses Google OAuth (Authorization Tokens) for authentication and authorization. OAuth is an open standard authorization protocol that allows third parties to access user data without the need to know a user's password.
Just how secure are my files?

Insync syncs the files directly to Google Drive via HTTPS (a secure connection).

You give Insync access to your files via Google OAuth. Files are directly accessed via the client app to sync your files.
What stuff do we upload to our Insync servers?

We store your Google email address (never your passwords and account information), your platform (OS version) and Google Drive quota info (total, used, others, trashed).
What happens when an owner deletes a shared file?

The file gets deleted across all computers shared.
