Got the 1TG version last week for $190 from Amazon AU and it’s amazingly fast.

Plugged it into the PS5 and saved a bunch of PS4 games on it.

    Highly recommend!

    • I missed it…thought I would wait for cyber monday to make my purchases…. :( :(

      • I still think this is a good deal for 1TB. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/582779

I checked our reviews for this myself and it seems good. Assuming it's a Crucial P1 M.2 in there which would be fine for most external SSD use cases. I'm planning to use a Crucial P1 in an enclosure for my PS5 once it arrives.

    • +1

Yep best for the money to expand PS5 storage.

  • +1

Is this better or worse than "Rolling your own" with the NVME deals floating about and grabbing an enclosure?

Price point seems attractive, but I don't know what drive lives in here…

    • +4

Some of the external enclosure chipsets are pretty iffy, if you need an external just buy an external.

      • +1

Get a good external enclosure as you’d need one if you want do upgrade SSD’s on laptops, since you’d have no other way to clone the drive. Then when you’re done throw the old one in the enclosure as an external.

Worse, T7's SSD module is not shuckable.

      • +4

Not sure why you would want to shuck external ssds these days.

One of the main reasons that external HDDs were shucked was because they are typically a lot cheaper, but thats not the case with SSDs. E.g. you can get a WD Blue 500gb for 95 from Centercom, and that's a typical price instead of a special.

The other reason is for data recovery, but if your'e relying on the drive failing only on the usb bridge and not elsewhere as your data back up system. Then you have screwed yourself to begin with.

        • +1

          There are more reasons.
          - if T7's USB port gets broken, your data is inaccessible and probably lost
          - if T7's bridge chip gets faulty, your data is lost
          - you can not use T7 as an enclosure for testing or data recovery from external M.2 modules

Consensus among Reddit and Youtubers is that the UGREEN enclosures are good quality.

      • +1

Thanks for the recommendation - Looks like it's $43, about the same price as the other "no name" for USB 3.1 Gen 2 10 Gbps case.

That + a Kingston A2000 or a WD Blue and I reckon that might be a more flexible approach than grabbing this 500GB from…

"Shuckability" isn't a concern, but it's a great word so full marks for that.

        • Sounds like the one I ordered yesterday.

Note the WD Blue does not have DRAM (Linus says no to DRAM-less SSDs). It may not matter in your use case though.
I went with the A2000, which has DRAM, and will put that in my PC. My existing Crucial P1 moving to PS5 external duties.

I like the fact that with an enclosure I can swap NVMe's around over time. A bit more flexibility.

The main advantages of getting this:

      • Samsung warranty on SSDs is great (obviously, ideally you don't want to ever use it).
      • Convenience. You don't need to get an enclosure, do the research and decide on which chipset to get (ASMedia or Realtek).
      • Unlike T5, this one is NVMe based SSD.
      • At least acceptable USB-C cables (cheap enclosures could come with subpar cables).

      The potential disadvantages are:

      • Inability to potentially recover data when there is an error (but honestly, good luck doing any SSD data recovery, they are not like hard disks).
      • You can get better performance (sustained write) with a better NVMe SSD and enclosure. This one is DRAMless NVMe SSD.

USB 3.2/3.1 gen 2 doesn't have sufficient max bandwidth to max out a PCIe gen 3 NVMe SSD. So, no matter which way you go (even if you use your own NVMe SSD with an enclosure), it is still luxury item (as you are wasting the NVMe SSD). Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 enclosures are way too expensive. Basically, it comes down to price. Also, for important files, remember to backup regularly on another storage device (or devices).

im keen on the 1tb option but missed out

  • Sorry for my ignorance, but what are the use cases for the external hard drive nowadays with cloud storage and streaming services, other than for gaming consoles as I can see above?

    • +6

Avoiding paying a monthly fee for cloud services for photos stored at full quality locally

    • +5

      Photo/video editing

    • If you own a Tesla Model 3 bascially a Samsung T5/T7 is the safest bet for storing cam footage and sentry footage into.

    • If your photos and important files are all stored in cloud (and you don't really do PC or console gaming), then you probably don't need an external storage device.

  • Does any one know ab warranty and how we do warranty via amazon UK
Btw i like sandisk ssd extreme pro design rather than ss

  • got the 1tb for $186 2 weeks ago, arrived yesterday. It's amazing how small it is. Will be useful come next road trip.

  • I might wait for the T8. It will be faster than T7 right?

    • t3, t5 and then t7… next one will most likely name t9…

      • i see.. they cheated by skipping even numbers. Shifty.

  • I somehow managed to get Officeworks to price match this yesterday (I was surprised they did it) but anyway. great drive. super quick.
