I think using codes will void your cashback

    • +2

I didn't use the code, just to get shopback's 5+5 cashback. That's all

      • where's the $5 shopback?

        • If you haven't claim yet , it reached the limit 2 hours ago. Both from shopback. 5 for shop at eBay over 5 spending, 5 for any shop, they can be stacked. Therefore is 10. I still haven't receive the tracking.

    FYI

If anyone wants to use these with home assistant. Realise the new firmware patch will remote LOCAL api access.
There has been a big kick up about it on the TP-link forums. They have released a "non supported" firmware to re-enable local api. But for how long is anyones guess.

    • +1. If you want smart plugs that you can rip out of the cloud, dont get the TP-links.

      • Whats the alternative with simple setup like the TP Links? I have 6 i wanted to go HA eventually.

        • Get ones that are Tuya compatibile that have the ESP chip. They can then be flashed for custom firmware and run out of home assistant.

I buy the Brilliant smart plugs from Officeworks. They flash easily.

        • As nedski said any ESP / Tuya based Plugs. I have the kogan smart plugs that I flashed with esphome. I'll run the TP-link until it stops being supported.

    • Update Nov 26:

We're sorry the recent firmware update has problems for the Kasa community. Since its release, we've been busy creating a Beta firmware that'll enable people to continue to use third-party smart home software & platforms using local APIs. Please DM if you'd like the Beta firmware

      from tp-link uk twitter

      • Yes but for how long until they dump that support.

I don’t want to buy these anymore after I heard the coil whine issue

    • common issue ?or individual cases? i had 2 similar smart plug, unknow brand, works well, no issue at all. never thought big company like TPlink can not handle this well

      • Mine has a coil whine when you connect to wifi then it settles.

  • The hs110 are one of the few smart plugs that can handle temporary 16Amp loads (3600watt), which is necessary for most electronic devices with heating elements. Most smart plugs just trip. It's a shame they are so wide and their api is being crippled.

    • New slimmer ones are coming before Christmas. They claim 10 amps, not sure if it can peak above it as well:
      https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/smart-plug/kp115/

      • +1

Yeah, I recall reading up on these as they looked great but their specs didn't state max 16amp, so I unfortunately lost interest. May look into them when they're finally released.

      • These coming ones are from Tapo line, which I prefer over Kasa line

        • Ah, nice. What's the difference? Is it a different app to control them then? All my current HS110s are on Kasa.

  • Will this work if I use it with a 10 socket power board?

I want to monitor our power from Tv and related entertainment equipment.

    • No reason why it wouldn't (power board connected to an hs110) - it's how I use a few of mine.

      • Cool, just thought the power may not be as strong. I have all my electricals and a second power board connected to a main power board. So adding this just seemed like maybe a step too much.

    • +1

      Will work fine.

The problem here is that you won't know how much each item is using (Individually).

For simplicity, you may well be better putting your money towards a Power Consumption Meter plug and connecting the Power board to it. They at least have a Display and can be used around the house Ad Hoc to quickly see how much power is being used on the spot without having to fiddle with an App. Saves loading an App on your device or having to refresh the app to see exact power being used at that second which sometimes can be important?

This TP-Link device adds Wi-Fi (Power On/Off) control which is great if you plan on leaving it there and to use for this purpose. It is also good for long term.

Personally, I use a combination of both but find a Power Use Meter with LED display the handiest for Ad Hoc monitoring. Less fiddling about and like this TPLink device will also have a total consumed amount and over what period of time if required.

      • Thanks for the reply, will check it out.

      • +1

Do you have a recommendation for a Power Consumption Meter plug, please? I would like to monitor how much electricity I use on my new induction stove top that I have started using instead of the traditional 4 stove top electrical.

        • lordra depends on what your powerbox is like you might want a main line meter. Is your induction stove top a plug in one or is it wired into the wall?

          • @thekow: It's just a portable one that I got from the aldi sale. Same as the KMART one. It plugs into the wl power socket.

What's a main line meter? (sorry, I'm new to this and excited to be able to track this!)

            • +1

@lordra: Induction Cooktops vary during cooking and depending on the level will range from 200watts to 1200watts and all levels will vary during cooking (On…Off….On Full whack…. then perhaps half whack and so on.
              .
As for which Power Consumption Meter plug to get. Well any should do the job in showing you what the current Watts being used are.
              .
The difference between many are whether you want to monitor over a long period of time & to include costs. It gets harder of you are on "Time of Use" plan (Peak, Shoulder and Off Peak) as most these Meters only allow 2 tariffs to be set. Anyhow, Ignoring that part any would do the job

TIP: The Bigger the display the better, Don't get one with a small display. ALSO backlight would be nice but not critical.
Just search Google for: "Digital Energy Consumption Monitor".

How wide are these puppies - in a standard spaced wall socket will they impede access to plug a standard corded device into the socket beside it?

Edit: And is there any size difference between the two models?

    • Hi I've a HS100 which is oval shape taking over two plug points space, about measurements-
      width_5-7cm and length - 8/11cm(top part/ bottom).

Both looks like same size, but not so sure as I Just ordered HS110 today.

    • How wide are these puppies - in a standard spaced wall socket will they impede access to plug a standard corded device into the socket beside it?

Yes unfortunately. Some things you can jam in beside them, but they're bulky.

      • Thanks Tardvark and Krism. I ended up ordering one anyway, as I think this would be excellent for my coffee machine as it needs 20-30 minutes of heat up time for all the internals to heat up nicely. Working from home, sometimes I'm in a meeting and wish I could turn on the machine so it's pretty ready for me to pull a shot in between meetings. Now I'll be able to mute MS Teams, say 'Alexa, turn on my coffee machine' and BAM!

If it takes a fair bit of space on the socket, I could get a really short extension lead and attach the TPLink to that. It wont be visible behind appliances, so that would stop it hogging power point space.

I'd love a 20cm extension lead, but I think half a metre is about the shortest you commonly find.

EDIT: Found some 30cm power cords - grabbed four as they'll be handy for these sorts of situations :)

  • Does anyone here currently have this D-link device?
If so, can you confirm if the power use show in the app is live and refreshes in the App on the spot as things change?

I bought some Meross MSS310 recently and one has to manually refresh the Apps screen to see changes in Watts being used. It's annoying as I would rather see the actual power live without having to refresh screen.
Oh and the Meross MSS310 are Wide and take up two sockets!

    • +1

Yep can confirm energy usage in the app is real time and doesn't require refresh. This is the HS110 from TP-Link, D-Link is a different company.

      • Oops….forgot to correct the "Dlink bit to TPlink"!
Thanks for confirming that it is real time and is what all apps should be! The silly Meross App isn't and one has to pull finger down screen to refresh each time! Stupid or what!

      • I’m not sure about this. I bought an air conditioner yesterday along with one of these plugs, and the energy usage stayed the same for 5 minutes but every time I refreshed it was a different figure.

I’m very dubious of its accuracy.

        • Ah ha so this seems to be like the Meross MSS310 which requires Refresh of screen to show current power in use. I have never left it long enough to see if it Auto Refreshes (will check later). Ideally I would like a Smart Plug that shows Live wattage via the App.

Aircons: Check AMPS/Watts on your new Aircon. Remember this is only capable of up to 10amp or 2400watts.

    • Yes and no. Seems to update every now and then. But you get a more real time reading if you refresh :).

These are useless for devices with electronic/digital one-off switches, right. Guess you'd need an IR blaster or something for that.

    • Pretty much it just turns the power on off.

  • I want to test how much my Dryer is consuming.

Will I need anything further apart from this plug?

    • Be careful with Dryers as they are like heaters. Check your Dryers current Output (on label or manual) as these devices are only rated 2400W or 10Amps.

  • This is also $20 at Bunnings and JB Hifi

  • No longer available

    • Still works for me.

      • I just tried again on my phone (eBay app) and I get an error. "This item isn't available in the requested quantity. It may have been purchased already, or the listing has expired."

        • Yea gone now!
