Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane - LA return from $1156

Seems like the best fare I've seen in a long time. Qantas flights for the same period cost around $1215, but you get to fly on the A380.

  • how much is their fare normally ?

    • Their last sale was around $1346. If it's not on sale it would be around $1500.

      • thanks…

I flew with them exactly a year ago for $930 return. Though prices have gone up, which makes this deal pretty good.

Great service. New planes. Reasonable seating in cattle class. Decent personal entertainment unit. Non stop nibbles during the flight (+ main meals of course). 2x32kg baggage (might have changed). Only down side is that the check in process is very slow on both ends - turn up 3 hrs prior minimum.

3 hour minimum is the same for all international flights…
Allows time to clear customs and security checks. As for check ins… well on a full flight you'd be processing 350+ passengers by a team of approximately 10 check in staff for economy which holds 300+, at even 5mins a person that's 2.5 hours for check in alone, not including custom clearance. That's why you need the 3 hour minimum before push from gate.

Ok - arrive with more than 3 hrs to spare…When I flew there were less than 5 check in counters for the whole flight at either end. It was double the time I have queued for for Malaysian Airlines, Qantas and Thai in the past. Maybe I was just unlucky… Having said that, it wouldn't deter me from flying with them again.

      • Both Qantas and V offer 23Kg per checked bag for economy X 2 bags = 46Kg in total to the USA.

Qantas has similar prices at from 1214.

Feb/March is the low season, so chances Delta/United would be in the same range as well.

    • Low season?? Not for SNOW. Bring it on!

  • if its less than $100 difference which one would be better to fly with V or Qantas?

Pick a flight with the best schedule, most US flights are mid mornings/avro and get into LAX early in the morning. The flights back are late evening and gets here early morning. But there are probably some that will suit you better than others.

Also check your connecting flights, e.g. Qantas/AA have direct SFO/LAX to MIA flights, where as Virgin on Delta have an additional stop in between, or have fly to Fort Launderdale instead on V America.

Don't try to save a couple of bucks and having to depart/arrive really early or late, or have wait for ages for a connecting flight.

Btw, the special fares are only available on selected dates, so it will cut down your choices fairly fast.

Also, Delta is offering Virgin flights on codeshare at the same price (7 bucks more), so depending on your FF, buying a Delta ticket on Virgin might be better (skyteam)

also, if flying on Qantas, try their multicity bookings, you could add AKL or another Australian city for little or no money.

      E.g. MEL-SYD-AKL-MIA-MEL last year was 2100 or so, MEL-MIA-MEL was about 1900.

  • I used a similar deal last year and went to San Francisco , never been so cold in my life!

      You and Mark Twain…

based on popular saying (although its a myth.. well at least the Mark Twain part)

Mark Twain once asserted "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.

Go 50 miles south to San Jose/Silicon Valley and you'd be 20 degrees warmer

So expensive compared to a year ago. I have to go again in March but am still holding off. Last Dec we flew our family of 6 (yes 6) there for just under $6000. I can't believe how expensive it is now!
