Own an M1 Macbook Air with 8gb ram. Incredible, absolutely incredible. Stays icey cold no matter what load, super powerful (even running blender and UE4), snappy and responsive as hell. Would very highly recommend.

    • What's it like under load? I want one bad after seeing that it runs Photoshop and stuff just fine through Rosetta. Native versions will run even better. Reviewers are saying they couldn't even get the fans to turn on the Pro when putting it through paces, that's how cold it stayed. So I'm thinking maybe the base Air will do just fine for me, it doesn't sound like thermal throttling and losing a core costs you all that much headroom.

      • +1

Mine thermal throttles after around 10-15 minute of intensive use, but it doesn’t throttle much (maybe like 10-15% at most) and stays under 35 degrees C all the time. It’s absolutely amazing.

      • +1

The base warms up eventually when under heavy load, I should not have stated it's 'icy cold', it still has a CPU and ram that get worked hard. However it's a comfortable heat, unlike other similar laptops, and it's quite a small area of heat as well (I assume because the cpu and ram are both together now?).

I think you'd be fine either way, but the Macbook Pro would probably prevent any type of throttling considering the fan is there.

  • +2

I might swap out my 16 maxed out for a new one. Intel cpu runs way too hot which actually ruins performance.

    • I got the MBP 16 i9 base and thinking about getting the MB Air and a gaming PC. But it looks like it would be hard to get $3000 for my Laptop now. So many people dumping their 16 on FB marketplace

      • Mine is scratched out but definitely not like the old macbook pros which run hard to this day

      • Yeah I can see a lot of people dumping their old Intel Macbook including myself after seeing review and having a play of it at a store.

  • +2

Just get the MacBook Air and spend the cash saved on the extra RAM and storage.

    • Save the difference in money for whatever monster chip Apple releases two years from now.

      • +2

Looking forward to whatever M2 with real GPU Apple have planned for the big boy laptops

        • Supposedly TMSC is moving to 3nm production in 2022, which will be perfect timing for the A16 (which I'm guessing will be the M2, rather than make a new M chip each year).

The GPU in the existing machine isn't bad either. I'm in the market for a new Mini, at release my thoughts were "rah rah, missing ports, soldered ram, ARM garbage, I'm going to buy last gen machine I can upgrade and put 32GB RAM in!"

Then I saw the graphics benchmarks on the M1 were somewhere near the GTX 1060 and changed my mind. I seriously wonder if this will be the icebreaker Apple needs to start getting a lot of games produced for it.

Anyone have these in a business setting?… i.e. Can they be added to a domain? Use smb shares using AD creds etc? This thing is a nightmare come true for me if introducing it will drive my support team mental and tie them up in crap… (i say this because the apple users have already asked if they can upgrade to Big Sur on their current macs.. Lucky that was an easy No)..

    • +1

Wasn't that only a problem if you're using iOS apps on the M1 Mac through a VPN or something? Shouldn't this run just like a normal Mac otherwise.

      • -1

Dunno im sure there is issues but thought id ask if anyone has this already deploying in their business…

    • +6

Lucky that was an easy No)..

Have you actually tested it with your apps, or are you just obstructing people cause you dislike Apple. It's frequently hard to tell.

Can they be added to a domain? Use smb shares using AD creds etc

How can you be managing MacOS in business and not already know the answer to these questions?

      • -2

Firstly they wanted to update their current macs to Big Sur so get off your high horse its an easy No because you can't, secondly we manage currently with users from Macs creating double the tickets for my support team which consists of 3 support staff.. Our priority is stores which we have 500 of, not users on macs that can do everything they do fine on a pc but we allow it because they are from the creative segment of users who prefer it… And the apps they want to use have already said they don't run natively until next year. What i asked was high level if anyone has experience with them in a corporate network… We haven't got any for testing, yet to be approved and trust me in retail space right now, they count every penny. Hate or love macs has nothing to do with it… Simply what is someones experience who is already deploying them.

  • +2

why get this over the macbook air though.

    • +2

This has fans for active cooling. There are reviews that say the air can get very warm if you using demanding apps as the Air is only passively cooled.

    • Air : Slightly lighter, much cheaper, fanless

Pro: Better battery life, better sustained performance with fan cooling, brighter screen

Pro has the touchbar instead of F keys.. up to you if that's a plus

  • If you have a child in school or University, setup a UNiDAYS account and you get 11% of all apple products.
I just ordered the new MacBook Pro with 16Gb memory 512Gb storage for $2371.

Not a fan, since apple does not respect privacy anymore.

Lets just say you were never going to buy it. Just a troll.

    • +1

I have zero interest in buying a Mac (though intrigued by M1), but don't spread misinformation.

macOS has been designed to keep users and their data safe while respecting their privacy.

Gatekeeper performs online checks to verify if an app contains known malware and whether the developer's signing certificate is revoked. We have never combined data from these checks with information about Apple users or their devices. We do not use data from these checks to learn what individual users are launching or running on their devices.

Notarization checks if the app contains known malware using an encrypted connection that is resilient to server failures.

These security checks have never included the user's Apple ID or the identity of their device. To further protect privacy, we have stopped logging IP addresses associated with Developer ID certificate checks , and we will ensure that any collected IP addresses are removed from logs.

  • I think i'll wait out a few iterations for the software to catch up. Not much of a Mac user, more into the PC side of things for desktop and iPhone/iPad/Android for mobile. There's certainly some potential here for the M line of SoCs from Apple but will take some time for the software to catchup. Would rather run natively than rely on emulation via Rosetta or others.

Light. Years ahead. What's a computer?

  • yes, Mac laptops are more expensive than windows laptops. But in my experience at least, more long lasting. I'm typing this on my late 2013 MacBook Pro which apart from having a battery replacement is still running just fine 7 years after I bought it (at 10% off at The Good Guys, thanks Ozb!). But these M1 machines are the first in ages that I've actually been excited by so I've got one on the way (EDU pricing, thanks JB Hifi). Plus I imagine I'll probably get a reasonable price for my old machine when I resell it.

And if I need Windows for something I have a Windows PC anyway (haven't run Bootcamp for years).

    • Cant say the same about apple. Have had an MSI laptop for 6 years and still runs great. Performance is good and just added another 8 gig of ram so I can play some newer title games . Also have a Mac book Pro 2017, which lags, the fan runs out of control, heats up often, got 256 SSD now realised its impossible to upgrade. Can't play games. And that God awful keyboard on it… Also cost more.

      • If you genuinely have a MacBook Pro 2017 (which from your history of anti-Apple comments full of vitriol is surprising) and are having lag and heat control problems, you should take it to Apple and have them fix it. Then if you still didn't like it for any other reason, you should have sold it, given you have another laptop that is still running great.

One positive about you getting the terrible keyboards on the old MacBooks is that if you have problems with the keyboard they will replace the entire laptop (haven't confirmed, as I didn't buy a Mac with one of those keyboards on purpose, but I saw it on a comment on OzBargain).

        • -2

It's a work laptop. I'm forced to use it and therefore the Apple hate. Had it checked and noting is broken. It's just crap. The keyboard doesnt have tech issues. It just feels bad to type on it. Those butterfly keyboards are just awefull. Infact others colleagues have often complained about the same issues . But hey sorry if I offended a fanboy.

          • @earth worm jim: I'm not an Apple fanboy (I run LineageOS on Motorola phone, run a PC desktop, have a WearOS Fossil watch).

The keyboard is the only thing from your list of complaints that seems to be a common complaint. Can I ask what it is you do for work where you're employer requires you to use a Mac laptop and what tasks are causing these issues? Maybe upgrading to Apple Silicon would fix your issues? It would fix the keyboard issue at minimum.

            • -4

@tolchok: You saying you are not a fanboy and trying to force a view on how great apple is, disregarding the opinion of someone who has had a bad experience with it suggests otherwise mate. The inability to upgrade ram/disk, fan noise and heating and resulting lag due to throttling are infact very common issues for ppl who use the machine to do more than just browse Facebook. Google is your friend.

              • @earth worm jim: I’m not trying to force any view on you, I’m just: 1. Providing info on the product this deal is about (which I have access to and you don’t), 2. Calling you out as an Apple-hater, as you have so many anti-Apple (iPhone, computer) posts on OzBargain. I don’t know if you are being honest with your comment that your employer is genuinely forcing you to use a Mac and whatever you are using it for causes lag and heat control issues, or whether you are making it up to support your "Apple = bad" rants. I note you didn’t say what kind of work you do in which your employer forces a Mac on you. I suspect you are not being honest, but if you are being honest, then you should definitely write negative reviews about that product (MacBook Pro 2017) and ask your employer whether you can change to a different laptop. This bargain post is about the MacBook Pro M1 laptops (2020, not MacBook Pro intel 2017).

What you have been doing is posting creature-that-lives-under-the-bridge comments across Apple deals for products you don’t have such as "From the specs looks like itll be slower than a snapdragon android phone. Apple crapping out junk again to make a quick buck" and "This is exactly why I said it was trash.[…]" and calling everybody else fanboys, and calling Apple users slaves etc. These comments are all based on tech you aren’t claiming to have and go against most professional reviewer’s comments about the product and the experiences of people on here (including me) with the product. Your whole argument is a bit Trumpian.

As to being a fanboy, I for one try different tech and keep the ones I like rather than being pro or anti any particular maker (Samsung is the manufacturer I had the most issues with, though I still buy Samsung items if they suit my needs). If I was an Apple fanboy I would use an Apple phone (I don’t and don’t have plans to), I’d use an Apple Watch (ditto), I wouldn’t post about my negative experiences with my iPad Pro and I wouldn’t post about my positive experiences with non-Apple tech.

Must be a picnic for apple fan boys. They are coming to these forums in droves to neg anyone who dares to criticize even the smallest point.

    • -1

I know. No laptop/notebook is perfect. But they don't want to hear about even the slightest flaw. They even argue with other Mac fans about any negativity on features/build etc.

      • +1

I think the issue is that trolls and fanboys/fangirls of other OSs and/or haters of Apple products keep making comments that are just meant to be inflammatory like "eww… Apple, they are trash" or "but it is an Apple" AND/OR are making straw man arguments AND/OR stating things that really aren't a negative to most users like "won't dual boot into W10 anymore".

BTW: I am not an Apple fanboy. I have a W10 desktop which I use fairly frequently (mostly for VR). I have a Motorola phone running LineageOS and I do not plan on changing to iOS (or even back to stock Android), as I like LineageOS more. I also think spending thousands of dollars on a phone is silly. I have a Fossil watch running WearOS (or Android Wear, or whatever they want to call it). I also criticise Apple products if I don't like them - for instance I bought an iPad Pro and it was my most regretted purchase. I would not recommend it and have pointed out the flaws on various forums, though have been respectful and kept my posts mostly factual.

  • +1

What is it with apple and storage?
Is it so they can charge you endless cloud fees and/or hundreds of dollars extra to get to match the storage capacity of a mobile phone?

    • Yeah $300 premium for an extra 256gb is crazy!

  • The gaming benchmarks seem inflated compared to what people are reporting here ….

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1er-NivvuIheDmIKBVRu3…

    • I just realized these are Rosetta benchmarks so in theory its possible that performance could be significantly better in native.
    • I just realized these are Rosetta benchmarks so in theory its possible that performance could be significantly better in native.

Yeah but not a ton of games run natively.

  • Hey guys, a bit of a noob here on Macs. I need to replace a 10 year old i7 MacBook Pro (that barely functions given how long it takes to load something!) for a family member with either a new Air or Pro. Prefer not to spend more than I need to. Main use case is Microsoft suites and some photos editing here and there and the usual internet browsing and YouTube entertainment. Maybe a little gaming for her 8 year old given she will have a computer capable of it. Is Pro an overkill? Will the Air last the user for the next 6-7 years? Thanks.

    • +1

Air will do. My son bought got an air 8gb/256 and he uses office 365, premiere pro and ilustrator, no issues so far

    • +1

I replaced my 2011 i7 Macbook Pro with a new Macbook Air. Very happy with the upgrade so far. Only downgrade is the screen size (15" to 13") and available ports on the sides. The Air only has 2 usb-c ports vs the old macbook pro which had plenty of options.

For your use case I would recommend the lowest spec air. One upgrade that you may want to consider is the storage. The base comes with 256gb which may be pushing it for photo editing work and video games if you're expecting to keep original files on the machine for any length of time.

I bought a Mac Book pro 13 m1 on friday just to try it out given the currently generous return period.
The hype is quite real, this thing is very fast. I have not had the fan come yet and that is after two days of use and installing various programs. Battery life is very impressive too. Probably double a comparable windoes laptop or old macbook.
I got the 8gb version as 16gb has a long lead time. I am impressed with the memory management. Even with only 8gb it can keep a lot of programs open. I had Photoshop, lightroom, word, Safari and Outlook open and it was mostly running OK. Switching apps did sometimes cause a lag for up to 5 seconds before the performance improved back to full speed. Pretty impressive for only 8gb. However If I decide to keep it I will return the 8gb and order the 16gb. I think that one will fly even with a lot of multi tasking with memory heavy apps. It's not that expensive either with about 2600 for 16gb/1tb option via student discount. It's not cheap but compared to the competition it's good given the performance benefit, screen quality and battery life. Regardless I will still keep my surface book 3 so I can use windows.

    • it's good given the performance benefit, screen quality and battery life.

You can get some sweet stuff on any platform at $2,600

      • This combination of light weight + battery + speed is expensive. XPS 13 and the Thinkpad X series are great too but you aren't saving much.

        • The battery life is very impressive. Probably the best battery life in any laptop you can buy right now by far. Performance is great too even with x86 apps.
Saying that I will probably return it. I have become much more used to 15" screens and the small screen is annoying. Also i prefer and need windows so I would need another laptop anyway.

  • Got one from exactly there. Thanks OP!!

  • +4

Someone put it well on twitter - "Imagine if Apple launched a new MacBook Air at the same $999 starting price that came with a Core i7 10750H and RX 560 graphics, but they did it without a fan and added 6 hours more battery life. That’s basically what they did." - The level of performance plus battery life is truly transformative.

    • +1

Yeh this is spot on. I hope this thing lasts a long time and doesn't degrade. Although the Pro has a fan, but it's hardly gonna be used unless you're doing super intensive tasks.

    • +2

I think that might be overselling the graphics a bit but the basic MBA is an absolute bargain by Apple standards

  • Wonder what the performance is like with python/java/c++ etc and softwares like autoCAD
    Air or pro?

  • Has anyone tried connecting the MBA M1 to two external monitors? I’m reading several sources claiming that it only supports one external monitor.

    https://appleinsider.com/articles/20/11/11/how-apple-silicon…

“The MacBook Air with an M1 processor can connect only a single external display at a time, in parallel with the internal display. It supports up to 6K at 60Hz so monitors like the Pro Display XDR will work fine.”
