What Would Be a Good SSD to Replace an Older Laptop HDD?

Looking for some advice.

I have an old toshiba satellite laptop which has win 10. This laptop has a sata HDD which is easily accessible.

I want to replace the HDD with a SSD. What would be a good SSD to get and do I need to get one with the exact dimensions as the HDD so it fits?

Thanks.

A crucial MX 500 2.5 inch ssd will do. You can consider something like a Samsung 860 Evo or 860 Pro.

    • These or Western Digital Green or Blue 2.5" SSD.

      • Thank you for your response.

Do the crucial or the western digital have DRAM?

        • Hi I got Crucial MX500 500GB recently, I can confirm it has DRAM.

Crucial MX & Western Digital Blue have DRAM.

Western Digital Green doesn't have DRAM.

Any SSD. Also make sure you have at least 8GB of ram. Worse is when you have 4GB and the laptop needs to use page file.

    • Laptop has 4GB ram. Will using an SSD not make much difference to performance due to 4GB ram?

Yes. A year ago, I updated our old 4gb RAM laptop from HDD to SSD. Turned it from almost not usable to very usable. A year later I updated it from 4gb to 8gb. That then took it from usable to a little bit more usable.
HDD to SSD is very worthwhile

  • Check the height of the current HDD and SSD. That should be the only difference to worry about. Your new SSD will likely be using a newer SATA protocol, which is backward compatible.

Motherboard firmware should be ACHI 1.0 compliant to take advantage of TRIM/NCQ function (extends your SSD life, speed things up)
